Blinkers to have The Grey focused on return to winner's circle
The Grey, a progressive son of prolific Deep Field in the Brad Widdup stable, hasn't quite lived up to early promise for connections, with only a lone win from eight starts since debuting more than a year ago.
But a reignition looks primed in a Provincial Benchmark 64 Hcp over 1100m where The Grey is one of a trio of three-year-olds taking on the older horses.
After a somewhat disappointing second-up effort when he ran home only fairly into a place against similar opposition, the stable has immediately put the blinkers back on.
That day he was backed from $3.50 into $3.10, yet after working through traffic from midfield, he didn't put his mind on the job late.
So blinkers were again sought to help sharpen him up over the full trip, and so too will a drying track, expected to be officially rated Good.
And significantly, Josh Parr who rode The Grey to his only win so far – a dominant maiden success at this track last November – returns to the saddle.
A blending colour of grey and chestnut, The Grey will likely head to a midweek metropolitan race if he salutes at home.
He opened around $2.90 in early betting ahead of five-year-old mare and fellow local Everyone's A Star at $4.70.

Injured jockey Tyler Schiller cleared for early spring return
Star jockey Tyler Schiller has targeted a racing return in the lead up to next month's Listed The Rosebud card after being cleared for a comeback from a back fracture. Schiller has been out of the saddle for the past two months due to a compression fracture in the core of his T8 vertebrae, suffered in a race-day incident on May 28. Specialists prolonged his stint on the sidelines earlier this month but a further check-up this week has seen Schiller given the green light to return. Schiller, who missed most of the Brisbane Winter Carnival, is set to make his return at the opportune moment with Sydney's Spring Carnival looming. Gosford preview: Trainer Kylie Gavenlock anticipates a strong performance from Renoir in his mile test
Trainer Kylie Gavenlock has been quite happy with Renoir in his two runs back from a spell and feels the gelding can run a bold race when he gets his first opportunity over a suitable distance. The four-year-old was spelled after one run in September of 2023 and returned from his long break with a fifth behind Donwon over 1000m at Gosford on May 29. Renoir followed up with a fifth to Caelus over 1300m at Hawkesbury where he was doing his best work through the line. The four-year-old's pedigree also suggests he will be much better suited to the mile and further being a son of Dundeel from a granddaughter of Adrian Knox Stakes winner, Starry Way. Find a winner here! 'He was only just getting wound up the last little bit the other day but he was very good after the post,' said Gavenlock. 'I was quite happy with his first-up run too. The distance was too short but I don't think the heavy track suited him. 'While he got through it okay, he will appreciate the bit better going this week. 'Now that we have got him up to the mile, I think that should suit him a lot more.' Gavenlock feels Renoir is ready to run much better than a $31 chance in the Eagles Plumbing Plus Super Maiden Plate (1600m). 'This doesn't look the strongest Super Maiden and I wouldn't have thought he would the price that he is. He is worth a couple of bucks each-way,' she said. Gavenlock's other two runners are both first-up but she feels they can run well. Alfred will resumes in the Bateau Bay Bowling Club Maiden Plate (1100m). While unplaced in his seven runs to date, Alfred has finished fourth and fifth in five of them. 'He's probably a little unlucky not to have had a couple of placings,' Gavenlock said. 'He is a horse that is not mature yet. He is a really leggy horse and I feel next time in, he will be a better deal.' The son of American Pharoah has shown nice ability on his short career. He finished third behind Bartolf at Scone at just his second start last July while broke his maiden in nice style at Taree back on January 7. 'I like him a lot and when he gets up to 1400 metres and mile this time in, I think he will be a very nice horse,' she said. â– â– â– â– â– Ghaznavi may still be a maiden after 17 starts but trainer Cameron Crockett's faith in the gelding still remain strong. The son of Invader looks well placed to go one better when he steps out in the Maas Mile Maiden Handicap (1600m) with Mathew Cahill aboard. 'Now that he is up to a mile and the races are run at a steadier tempo, I think he can settle a bit closer which will help,' he said.' Crockett has liked what he has seen from recent stable addition Durova who makes her debut for the stable in the Toohey's New Benchmark 74 Handicap (1000m). The three-year-old daughter of Russian Revolution was previously trained by Ciaron Maher and won first-up last September while her last run was a handy fourth to First Mission at Canterbury on April 30. 'I bought her online a few weeks ago. She went through for $55,000 but failed the scope so they sent her back,' Crockett explained. 'My being an opportunist, when she went back online, I bought her for $13,000. 'Ash Morgan rode her at her at Canterbury and he said she was very unlucky not to have won after racing on the fence which was off that day. 'The 1000 metres might be a touch short for her but if she isn't winning, she will be the run of the race.'

Canterbury preview: Peter Snowden's faith has been rewarded as a more mature Cassiel shines ahead of midweek target
Trainer Peter Snowden has always known the ability was there and while it has taken time for Cassiel to show it on race day, the gelding has delivered it in spades this preparation. Cassiel placed in three of his four runs last campaign but was his own worst enemy, according to Snowden. With maturity, the four-year-old has been much better this time in, leading all the way to score by more than a length from Apex when resuming at Canterbury on April 21 and backing it up with a two-and-a-half length win from Fly Scotty Fly at Hawkesbury four weeks later in a Benchmark 64 over 1100m with 61kg. 'He just wanted to go too hard and too quick in his races,' Snowden said. 'He is racing a lot more tractably and it is showing in his performances on race day. 'He's probably one of the best trackworkers I've ever had but come race day he just wanted to overdo it and [was] beating himself. 'Now, he is starting to learn to relax a lot better. 'He's not perfect but because he's relaxing more, he's able to find more at the end of his races. 'He will win a lot more races yet if he keeps going the way he is going.' 'He's definitely going the right way and you can't beat winning form,' Snowden said. 'It's a similar race for him this week and he looks well placed in that grade.' Lightly-raced three-year-old Braveheart is another who possess nice ability and is getting better with time and maturity. 'He is a full brother to King Of Sparta and there's no reason he can't be up to that grade at some stage,' he said. 'He is very lightly raced – he's only had a handful of starts – but every start he has had, he has shown something. 'He had a few little issues in the early days but we have ironed them out now and he is going very well. 'The family keeps getting better as they get older, there's no doubt about that, and I expect him to do the same. The son of I Am Invincible caught there eye with his strong closing third behind Axius on the Kensington first-up and is a leading chance in the Broadsiding @ Darley Handicap (1250m). 'I just want to get her on the best track I can,' he said. 'She is more effective on good ground than soft so we will see what happens with the weather.' The three-year-old daughter of I Am Invincible has been good in her barrier trials including a nose second to proven performer Highlights after tracking him in the run in her latest heat at Canterbury on June 23. 'She is a nice filly; a big strong thing,' he said 'She had a few growing pains early and it has taken us a while to get her to the track. 'She has been trialling soundly and it was a very good trial at Canterbury at her last one against good company. She was very strong to the line.'
