Two remanded over alleged bribery linked to renovation permit approvals
KANGAR: Two individuals, including a retired officer from a local authority in Perlis, have been remanded for a week to assist in investigations into alleged bribery involving home renovation permit approvals totalling about RM70,000. The duo, a 61-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday. This followed a report lodged over alleged corruption linked to renovation permit applications across the state over the past three years. Magistrate Ana Rozana Mohd Nor granted the remand order beginning today until July 21, after MACC investigating officers submitted their request at the Kangar magistrate's court. The suspects were detained about 1.30pm yesterday at the state MACC office. A source said the two are believed to have colluded to solicit and receive bribes from applicants in exchange for facilitating the approval of renovation permits since 2022. "The male suspect is believed to have accepted payments ranging from RM300 to RM9,000 each via direct transfers to his personal bank account. "An estimated 200 transactions are believed to have been made between 2022 and 2024, totalling around RM70,000, based on permit application files," the source said. It is understood that the male suspect previously served as an enforcement assistant in charge of home renovation work, while the female suspect is still serving as an assistant officer in the same department at the local authority. The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. Perlis MACC director Mohd Nor Adha Ab Gani confirmed the arrests. Earlier today, the suspects, represented by lawyer Zuhair Ahmad Zakuan, arrived at the Kangar Court Complex at 10.10am escorted by MACC officers.
