Preparations for Nellaiyappar Temple's ‘Aani' car festival reviewed
As the 'Aani' festival of Sri Nellaiyappar Temple, the foremost celebration of the shrine, commences with the flag-hoisting on June 30, the car festival will be held on July 8, where thousands of devotees would participate to draw the State's third largest car along four streets around the temple.
Hence, the meeting was organised at the Collectorate on Monday to review the preparations to be made ahead of the festival.
He said the police, besides deploying the personnel in sufficient number along the four car streets around the temple, should enforce traffic diversions to avert traffic jam on the car streets. The west-bound vehicles from Tirunelveli Junction should be diverted via Bharathi Street, South Mount Road, West Mount Road and Courtallam Road during the festival.
The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation officials should inspect the power cables, electric poles, transformers etc. around the temple in advance for taking necessary precautionary measures.
The Corporation officials should inspect the roads on all four car streets and take necessary steps for either repairing or re-laying the roads wherever it is necessary so that the car can be drawn smoothly. Moreover, the Corporation should deploy the sanitary workers for sprinkling bleaching powder on the car streets and along the streets leading to the temple and collecting garbage.
The Department of Highways should immediately re-lay the road between Tirunelveli Town Arch and the temple as this small stretch being used by thousands of vehicles is in the worst shape.
The Fire and Rescue Services personnel, along with a fire tender should be stationed near the temple and the Department of Public Health should create health posts with ambulance near the shrine with all basic medicines.
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation should operate special buses to avert crowding, he said.
Corporation Commissioner N.O. Sukhaputra, District Revenue Officer M. Suganya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli West, Prasannakumar, and other senior officials from various departments participated in the meeting.

Salem Corporation provides manure produced at MCCs to farmers for free
The Salem Corporation is providing manure produced at the micro composting centres (MCC) to farmers free of cost. The farmers can furnish their Aadhaar cards and collect the manure. The 60 wards in the Corporation generate over 550 tonnes of garbage every day, which is segregated as biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. The biodegradable waste is sent to the MCCs located at 36 places to produce manure, and the remaining is sent to the Chettichavadi dump yard. Each MCC has the capacity to produce two tonnes of manure. This manure is being provided free of cost to farmers and people involved in terrace gardening. Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan was instructed to provide this manure to farmers. The Commissioner inspected MCCs and directed the staff to distribute the manure for free. The details of manure distributed to farmers should be provided at the monthly farmers' grievances redress meetings. Civic body officials said that at present 200 tonnes of manure are available at the MCCs. The farmers can furnish their Aadhaar cards along with the application for receiving the manure. People who own terrace gardens can also apply with proper details, the officials added.

Maize cultivation to cover 5,500 hectares in Virudhunagar district
A target of 5,500 hectares of cultivation of maize in Virudhunagar district has been set under the Special Project on Maize Cultivation. In a statement, Virudhunagar District Collector N.O. Sukhaputra said maize remained the top crop among the millets in cultivation in the district. Under the project, farmers would get a kit comprising seeds, fertilizers and bio-fertilizers. Demonstration plots would be set up to explain to the farmers all techniques to be adopted for better yield. The Collector said a subsidy of ₹6,000 per acre would be given under the National Agricultural Development Project for paddy cultivation under system of rice intensification. The subsidy for cotton seeds was ₹140 a kg and for nipping the terminal bud of the main stem was ₹1,250 an acre. The farmers could approach the office of the Assistant Director of Agriculture,to get more details, the statement added.

Stick to stipulated deadline, Tirunelveli Corporation Commissioner tells officials and contractors
Corporation Commissioner Monika Rana, who inspected some of the ongoing development works in Palayamkottai and Thatchanallur zones of the urban civic body on Monday, instructed officials and contractors to stick to the stipulated deadline for completing the projects with superior quality. Since the clogged sewage channels near the water tank at Samathanapuram in Palayamkottai Zone would cause instant flooding during downpours on the Tiruchendur Road and along the Pothunala Street, Dr. Monika inspected the drainage channels at this spots and asked the officials to regularly clean these channels to avert flooding. When the Commissioner visited the Ramasamy Temple and the road connecting this temple and LIC Divisional Office near VOC Ground, she appealed to the public and the traders running roadside eateries not to leave the garbage getting generated in their shops on the road and dump it in the nearby drainage channels. She also instructed the officials to ensure cleanliness along this busy road by constantly monitoring the traders. 'Those who defy the Corporation's instructions and discard waste on the roads or dump it in the drainage channels should be taken to task if the repeated appeals go in vain,' she said. When she inspected the ongoing works at Children's Park, swimming pool, skating rink, walkers' path etc., all under the Smart City Mission near Bharathi School, the Commissioner asked the officials and the contractors to complete the projects assigned to them within the stipulated deadline. 'Any compromise on quality will be viewed very seriously as it will land you in legal complications besides blacklisting,' the Commissioner warned. Superintending Engineer Kannan and Assistant Commissioners Purandira Das and Johnson Devasahayam accompanied the Commissioner during the inspection.
