TN: Udangudi thermal power plant to start power generation by next summer

Chennai: The Udangudi supercritical thermal power plant in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu is expected to commence power generation by next summer, with work progressing rapidly on the first unit. The Rs 13,076 crore project, comprising two units of 660 MW each, is set to significantly bolster Tamil Nadu's electricity supply during peak demand periods. Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) Managing Director J. Radhakrishnan, in a statement, said that over 90 per cent of construction work on Unit 1 has been completed. While the initial plan was to commission the first unit by September, the MD hinted at a possible delay, stating that efforts are now focused on ensuring electricity generation begins by the end of the year. 'The work is progressing at full swing across all levels to ensure readiness before next summer,' said Radhakrishnan. 'Once Unit 1 becomes fully operational, Unit 2 will follow within the next four months.' He added that installation of key components such as boilers, turbines, water plant, power house, and conveyors has been completed. Work on the ash handling section and obtaining fire safety certification is currently being expedited. During test trials of Unit 1, nearly 10 technical issues were identified and subsequently resolved. Radhakrishnan also pointed out that one of the key reasons for the delay in completion was the shortage of skilled manpower. The Udangudi Thermal Power Project was originally announced in 2012 to address Tamil Nadu's growing power needs. However, delays in approvals and administrative processes meant that construction could only begin in 2017. The project is being developed on a 360-acre site near the coastal town of Udangudi and is designed as a supercritical thermal plant using imported coal, with an aim to increase efficiency and reduce emissions compared to conventional coal plants. Once operational, the plant is expected to add 1,320 MW of power to the state grid, providing much-needed support during high-demand seasons, particularly the summer months when electricity consumption soars due to air conditioning and irrigation requirements. Officials are optimistic that the project, once fully completed, will play a vital role in strengthening Tamil Nadu's power infrastructure and ensuring energy security for the coming decades.

Laying of underground power cables along Car Streets around Swami Nellaiyappar temple completed

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has completed the work on laying underground power cables along all four Car Streets around Swami Nellaiyappar Gandhimathi Ambal Temple to facilitate the smooth and safe conduct of the 'Aani' car festival to be held on July 8. Whenever the car of Swami Nellaiyappar Temple was drawn during the 'Aani' festival, the Tangedco would stop power supply on these four streets by temporarily disconnecting the cables to ensure the devotees' safety. The cable would be reconnected after the car crossed each street. To avert this cumbersome and time-consuming exercise, Tangedco has laid underground power cables along the four car streets. Led by Regional Chief Engineer Chandra, the Tangedco personnel on Thursday inspected the underground power cabling done along the four Car Streets and the mock restoration of power supply once the car crosses each Car Street. 'Even though the time and energy we'd have to spend for reconnecting the power cables will be saved this time, thanks to the underground power cabling, we'll have to stop the power supply during car festival as some of the youth would climb the electric poles. Till last year, our personnel had to reconnect the cables crossing the roads after the car crosses every point. This year, this problem will be averted. We'll have to just switch on to restore power supply after the car crosses each Car Street as the crowd will also follow the car until it reaches the station again in the evening,' said a senior Tangedco official. Ms. Chandra and others also checked the stopping and restoration of power supply during the inspection on Thursday. Meanwhile, new CCTV cameras were being installed by the police on all four Car Streets after removing the defunct cameras as the police would monitor the devotees moving around the temple from the control room to be set-up during 'Aani' festival. Moreover, watch towers are also being erected at vantage points on these streets. The Corporation is expected to commence the road-laying work shortly.

Preparations for Nellaiyappar Temple's ‘Aani' car festival reviewed

District Collector R. Sukumar chaired a meeting on Monday to review the preparations to be put in place ahead of the famous 'Aani' car festival of Sri Nellaiyappar Temple to be held on July 8. As the 'Aani' festival of Sri Nellaiyappar Temple, the foremost celebration of the shrine, commences with the flag-hoisting on June 30, the car festival will be held on July 8, where thousands of devotees would participate to draw the State's third largest car along four streets around the temple. Hence, the meeting was organised at the Collectorate on Monday to review the preparations to be made ahead of the festival. He said the police, besides deploying the personnel in sufficient number along the four car streets around the temple, should enforce traffic diversions to avert traffic jam on the car streets. The west-bound vehicles from Tirunelveli Junction should be diverted via Bharathi Street, South Mount Road, West Mount Road and Courtallam Road during the festival. The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation officials should inspect the power cables, electric poles, transformers etc. around the temple in advance for taking necessary precautionary measures. The Corporation officials should inspect the roads on all four car streets and take necessary steps for either repairing or re-laying the roads wherever it is necessary so that the car can be drawn smoothly. Moreover, the Corporation should deploy the sanitary workers for sprinkling bleaching powder on the car streets and along the streets leading to the temple and collecting garbage. The Department of Highways should immediately re-lay the road between Tirunelveli Town Arch and the temple as this small stretch being used by thousands of vehicles is in the worst shape. The Fire and Rescue Services personnel, along with a fire tender should be stationed near the temple and the Department of Public Health should create health posts with ambulance near the shrine with all basic medicines. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation should operate special buses to avert crowding, he said. Corporation Commissioner N.O. Sukhaputra, District Revenue Officer M. Suganya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli West, Prasannakumar, and other senior officials from various departments participated in the meeting.

Kathirimalai, remote hamlet in Erode, to receive power supply soon as tender process completed

A long-awaited project to bring electricity to Kathirimalai, a remote hamlet in Erode district, is set to begin soon, as the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) — formerly known as the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) — is in the process of issuing the work order to the contractor. Work is expected to commence within a month and be completed in three months. The remote hamlet can be reached only after a 9-kilometre trek across rough terrain from Kathiripatti, located at the foothills in Kolathur block of Salem district. About 82 km from Erode, Kathirimalai is home to 76 families comprising 267 individuals from the Solaga tribal community. The hamlet is situated at an elevation of 1,052 metres in the Chennampatti forest range within the Erode Forest Division, under the jurisdiction of Bargur Panchayat Union in Anthiyur taluk. In 2018, the village briefly received solar-powered lighting, with each household being provided two bulbs. However, most of the batteries have since become non-functional, leaving the village in darkness after sunset. The lack of electricity and motorable roads has posed serious challenges for residents, especially students and during medical emergencies. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, during his visit to Erode on December 20, 2024, announced the electrification of the hamlet at an estimated cost of ₹2.50 crore, which was later revised to ₹3.25 crore. Following this, tenders were floated, and a contractor was recently finalised. A senior engineer at the Gobichettipalayam Electricity Distribution Circle told The Hindu that 300 electric poles would be erected from Kathiripatti at the foothills to the hamlet, covering a distance of 8.34 km. Since there is no nearby sub-station within the circle, power will be drawn from the Sathya Nagar sub-station in Kolathur. The official added that household connections will be provided based on applications submitted by residents. 'The contractor is expected to begin work within a month and complete it in three months,' the official said. Transporting the poles and other equipment to the site will be a major challenge due to the absence of a motorable road. A single-layer water-bound macadam road, laid in 2022 at a cost of ₹1.47 crore through forest clearance, has suffered extensive damage due to rainfall and other environmental factors, further complicating access to the hamlet.
