A feast by the waves
Few dining experiences match the charm of being seaside, where time slows down and every bite is savoured to the sound of crashing waves. At Shangri-La's Bait Al Bahr, that charm takes on new life with fresh lobster on the grill, platters brimming with seafood, and a breeze that carries both salt and sizzle.
I arrived just past noon, the sun glinting off the waters of Barr Al Jissah, and found myself stepping into a seaside sanctuary where brunch isn't just a meal — it's a celebration of coastal living, Omani flavours, and effortless elegance.
'As Shangri-La celebrates its 20 years in Oman, and Bait Al Bahr being at the heart of the local community, we wanted to have an experience where families and friends alike can join Shangri-La for laid-back Saturday afternoons — plus get free access for pool and beach on us,' Sabrina Sobrayen, Director of Marketing and Communications, Shangri-La Al Husn, Muscat, told Times of Oman.
Shades of the sea on a platter
Bait Al Bahr — aptly named the 'House of the Sea' — has long been known for its shoreside seafood dining, with fresh catches and traditional Omani recipes at its core. For the first time, this beloved dinner venue has opened its doors during the day to host brunch lovers every Saturday from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Set in a temperature-controlled indoor space overlooking the water, BAB's Brunch is served family-style, with platters of shared appetisers arriving first — think marinated seafood, zesty salads, and fragrant mezze. It's a laid-back start, perfect for sipping something chilled while gazing out at the endless blue.
Freshest catch
Then comes the action. From a display of the day's catch — lobster, king prawns, octopus, and seasonal fish — the chefs work their magic at live cooking stations, grilling everything to order. I watched as flames kissed a butter-brushed lobster tail, its scent mingling with rosemary and garlic.
Beef tenderloin, lamb chops, and juicy chicken also sizzled nearby, adding to the theatre of the afternoon.
This isn't buffet-style chaos — it's curated, served directly to your table in courses that allow you to savour each bite. The service is seamless, yet warm and unhurried, in true Shangri-La fashion.
The dessert selection is a coastal delight in itself. Apple and rhubarb crumble competes with creamy panna cotta, while passionfruit cheesecake and chocolate mud cake offer a rich finish. Don't miss the cherry ginger crème brûlée or the made-to-order crêpes and pancakes—simple pleasures, done exquisitely well.

Oman Kite Festival 2025 concludes after exciting competitions and vibrant events
Muscat: The Oman Kite Festival 2025 came to a close after 10 days of exciting competitions and vibrant events held across several coastal locations in the Sultanate of Oman. The festival, which ran from 15 to 24 July, brought together more than 90 athletes from around the world. Organised by Omran Group in partnership with Oman Sail, Visit Oman, and the Oman Adventure Centre, the festival aimed to promote adventure and experience-driven tourism by showcasing the Sultanate's diverse coastal landscapes and supporting the growth of unique tourism offerings across the country. The closing ceremony was held at The Beachfront in Sur, South Al Sharqiyah, under the patronage of Dr. Yahya bin Badr Al Maawali, Governor of South Al Sharqiyah, and in the presence of Dr. Khamis Salim Al Jabri, CEO of Oman Sail, as well as senior representatives from Omran Group, sponsoring entities and strategic partners. The festival welcomed the participation of 90 athletes from around the world, who competed in a series of thrilling races. The highlight was the multi-stage 'Oman Downwinder' race, which unfolded over four legs: from Barr Al Hikman to Masirah Island, followed by a route from Masirah through Ras Al Ruwais, then from the Pink Lagoons to Al Ashkharah, and finally from Ras Al Jinz to Ras Al Hadd. In addition to the Downwinder, the festival featured the 'Kite Course' race along the shores of Barr Al Hikman, the 'Coastal Race' in Masirah Island, and the 'Slalom' event in Ras Al Hadd. Ayman bin Abdullah Al Ghafri was awarded first place in the second edition of the Oman Downwinder, finishing ahead of Mukhtar bin Abdulkarim Al Mujaini and Egypt's Ahmed Mohamed Gamal. The event highlighted the rich diversity of Oman's coastline and its capacity to host world-class international competitions. Meanwhile, in the Slalom race held in Sur, Majid Al Kharousi claimed the title after outperforming a competitive field. As one of three featured races during the festival, the Slalom further demonstrated the sport's variety and reinforced Oman's position as a versatile and attractive destination for global sporting events. Sultan bin Sulaiman Al Khudoori, Assets Manager at Omran Group, congratulated all of the participants for playing such an important role in supporting the tourism diversification objectives outlined in the National Tourism Strategy 2040 and showing what could be possible as Oman's coastal destinations grow into premier international venues for kiteboarding. Shaima Said Al Asmi, Events Specialist at Oman Sail shared her belief that each sporting event held in the Sultanate can build a legacy that contributes to tourism in each governorate across the nation and provides the impetus for SMEs, home-based businesses and local service providers to support current and future while also developing into national success stories. Sur — with its strategic location and deep-rooted maritime heritage — served as an ideal setting for the festival's grand finale. The strong public turnout underscored the growing interest in marine sports and highlighted their vital role in supporting the local economy and enhancing Oman's positioning as a leading destination for unique tourism experiences. The Oman Kite Festival serves as a platform to showcase the Sultanate's exceptional natural and marine assets, reinforcing its position on the global tourism map and capturing the attention of adventure sports enthusiasts and international sporting communities. Oman Airports efforts bear fruit, passenger traffic rises
Muscat: Oman Airports recorded a 2 percent growth in the number of passengers travelling through its airports during June 2025, reaching 1,134,924 travellers, compared to 1,109,745 in the same period last year. This growth is attributed to the ongoing efforts of Oman Airports, in cooperation with relevant authorities, to enhance the Sultanate's position as an attractive year-round tourist destination by providing quality facilities at airports and improving the traveller experience from the moment of arrival until departure. Oman Airports is committed to providing a smooth, safe, and high-quality travel experience by developing various airport facilities and implementing the latest technologies and smart services that help reduce processing times and enhance passenger comfort. The start of the Dhofar Khareef season is an additional factor in attracting visitors, given the Dhofar Governorate's stunning nature and unique atmosphere during this season. Ayn platform showcases media, public awareness services during Khareef Dhofar 2025
Salalah: Ayn platform, an active arm of the Ministry of Information, boasts strong presence at the 2025 Khareef Dhofar (monsoon) season's festival now underway in the Governorate of Dhofar. Ayn platform is introducing visitors to media services that shed light on Dhofar Governorate's tourism landmarks and cultural and humanitarian assets. Through its digital presence, Ayn platform is enhancing the community's interaction in different ways, including a 'Child Interface', an Interactive Digital Competition and on-the-spot radio and TV transmission. The Child Interface presents a visual programme featuring environmental adventures and field explorations in Dhofar Governorate. It develops learning skills, fosters cultural belonging and highlights entertainment content that responds to families' educational and innovative aspirations. The Child Interface also showcases electronic services that target children, including audiobooks and animated cartoons. It programmes, which run until 3 August, focus on entertainment and educational content that expands young people's awareness and intellectual potential. Ayn Platform's Interactive Digital Competition includes a set of cultural and tourism questions aimed at consolidating the Omani identity. It engages participants to local heritage in a simplified and attractive manner. The platform also offers online broadcasts of all radio and television programmes related to the Khareef season, with a dedicated category titled "Khareef Dhofar". This reflects the platform's vital role in highlighting the Sultanate of Oman's presence on the regional and global arenas. To support the season's digital coverage, short video segments were produced. They highlight the beauty of nature through aerial photography techniques (using drones). In this context, interviews are made with visitors from people from different nationalities, in different languages, thus ensuring access for local and international audiences. Ayn platform serves as one of the Ministry of Information's initiatives that embody Oman Vision 2040. It keeps pace with the Sultanate of Oman's digital transition. It dedicates digital space to Khareef Dhofar festival in eight languages, along with translated captions of images and articles highlighting the governorate's events and tourist attractions.
