The UAE's Union Pledge Day is coming up: will we have the day off?
If you're wondering when it is, what it symbolises and if this means a day off from work – here's what we know.
When is Union Pledge Day and what does it symbolise?
Union Pledge Day happens on July 18. It's the second time the national occasion is observed since HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, announced the new national occasion to honour the historic events leading to the UAE's establishment last year.
The declaration commemorates the pivotal day in 1971 when the Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, alongside his brothers, signed the declaration of the Union and the UAE Constitution, officially naming the country the United Arab Emirates.
This significant step was taken in preparation for the nation's formal establishment on December 2 1971, marking a historic milestone where the foundations of the Union were laid.
Union Pledge Day serves as a reminder of the UAE's rich history and the journey toward establishing the Union, celebrating the vision and unity of the nation's leaders.
Will Union Pledge Day be a public holiday in the UAE?
The public holiday is not listed in the UAE's official list of public holidays for 2025, so the likelihood is that Union Pledge Day will not be a day off.
However, the UAE's public holiday law also states that local governments have the power to declare other public holidays – so it will be up to the Abu Dhabi government to decide.
A day of national pride
Union Pledge Day is now observed annually to reflect on the achievements and progress of the UAE, fostering a sense of national pride and unity among its citizens.
This day underscores the importance of the UAE's founding principles and the continued commitment to the values that have shaped the nation.
As the UAE looks forward to celebrating its history and ongoing journey, Union Pledge Day is set to become a cherished occasion, reminding the nation of its spirit and leadership that have guided its growth and development.
