Conductor Edward Gardner ‘regrets' mafia comments about Italian opera singers
The London Philharmonic Orchestra principal conductor was speaking about his debut at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples when he said the 'chorus is made up of two rival mafia families — who after one performance put each other in A&E'.
In a statement, Gardner said: 'I would like to sincerely apologise to the members of the chorus of the San Carlo Opera House, Naples for my recent comments in an interview with The Times.
'I have deep respect and appreciation for the choir and its members. Shortly before my arrival in Naples I was informed that two members of the chorus had a public fight just outside the theatre resulting in one person being hospitalised.
'I was very surprised by this. However I did not intend to suggest that the choir were members of the mafia, and I am more than happy to retract that allegation.
'Performing Beethoven's 9th together in Ravello last summer was a meaningful experience that highlighted the talent, dedication, and hard work of this group.
'I regret that anything I said may have suggested otherwise because I have experienced first-hand the professionalism and excellence of this choir and I want to make it clear how much I value and respect everyone involved.'
This follows Mayor of Naples and chairman of the San Carlo Foundation board, Gaetano Manfredi, reportedly saying he would sue Gardner.
He called his comments 'very serious allegations that are completely unfounded', according to Italian reports.
Gardner is a former director of the English National Opera (ENO), and since last year been a musical director at the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet.
He was made an OBE in 2012 for services to music, and won the Outstanding Achievement In Opera Oliver award in 2009.
Gardner has conducted Riders To The Sea at the London Coliseum, and Punch And Judy at the Young Vic as well as the BBC Proms.

Sam Fender's People Watching is biggest-selling album released this year
People Watching became Fender's third number one album when it came out in February, with sales soaring as the North Shields-born singer played a series of sold-out shows in the North West last month. Meanwhile, another singer-songwriter – US star Alex Warren – has overtaken British star Lola Young as the artist with the UK's biggest song of the year so far. His song Ordinary has enjoyed a total of 1.09 million chart sales and been streamed 128 million times since its February release. It spent 12 weeks at number one, making him the US artist with the most consecutive weeks at number one in Official Singles Chart history. Close behind is Young with her self-proclaimed 'ADHD anthem' Messy, which has had 113 million streams and more than 33,000 downloads, making it the most-downloaded track of the year so far. Fresh from her Glastonbury headlining slot on the Other Stage, Charli XCX also makes it into the top 10 best-selling albums of the year so far, with BRAT in ninth place. Chelsea spends months at a time on the ship with her husband-to-be and their little boy Mattia, on a "friends and family" basis. So during that time Chelsea and Mattia split their time between the boat, Scotland - where she's originally from - and south Italy, where they have a house. "I say 'living' because we're not actually living here," she explained in a video on TikTok. "We're still passengers, but we are family and friends cruisers. "But when we do really long cruises it's basically like moving our life for that duration to be here." "And it means we can obviously be together for part of the long contract away from each other," she added. And she knows about the best perks of temporarily relocating to the ship - including the amazing food. She and Mattia are treated like any other passenger with the food that comes included with their "friends and family" tickets, which means they have to pay for drinks or if they want to dine at one of the speciality restaurants for a change. There's also a kids' club on board, and that's free too - although Mattia isn't a fan.
