
Nissan is closing seven plants after announcing huge fiscal loss
The Japanese firm is embarking on a huge cost-cutting programme and a total restructure aimed at stemming heavy losses.
In February Nissan announced it would reduce its workforce by 9000, close three plants and slash production by 20 per cent. Total production will fall to five million vehicles per year.
Today's expansion of those numbers comes following its huge net loss in the previous financial year. Nissan's next Leaf, a compact electric SUV, is still due to launch next year.
Nissan president and CEO, Ivan Espinosa, blamed the heavy loss on 'an uncertain environment'. However, the new 'prudent approach' by the company should see Nissan return to profitability in the next financial year.
It will continue to look at reducing costs, hoping to save almost $NZ3b by 2027. Streamlining the supply chain and cost efficiencies are how it aims to achieve this. Also unclear is whether work on a future electric city car goes ahead.
The workforce will be smaller by 20,000 employees come April 2027. That number includes the 9000 cuts that were already announced earlier this year.
These jobs will be culled from manufacturing, administrative and R&D roles.
Nissan has 133,580 staff globally, around 6000 of them at its Sunderland plant that makes Qashqai and Juke. Future Juke EV is another that has been put on hold for the moment.
The future of that plant is still unclear, as Nissan has said it will now close seven factories by 2027. It has not detailed which ones as yet, though it did confirm that one of those sites is a planned battery plant in Kyushu, Japan. That makes closure of Sunderland less likely as a new battery production plant is being built there.
All post-2026 product work is temporarily on hold, with 3000 staff tasked with 'cost reduction initiatives'. Most will take aim at Nissan's supply chain.
Nissan has also said it willl look to strengthen its partnerships with the Renault, Mitsubishi and Honda to help with cost cutting. Micra EV teaser image.

NetSuite adds AI translation to workflows for seamless teamwork
NetSuite has released a new feature called Text Enhance Translate, providing in-field translation capabilities integrated within NetSuite workflows. The feature allows users to instantly translate text fields into more than 20 supported languages, including Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, various English variants, Finnish, French (France/Canada), German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Enhanced collaboration The company states that this new functionality is aimed at boosting collaboration between teams operating across different language regions, simplifying daily activities such as reviewing invoices, responding to customer support queries, or setting up HR job descriptions. The upgrade allows organisations to avoid delays that can arise when texts have to be translated externally or by human translators, especially for routine operational usage. "With Text Enhance Translate, users can instantly translate a field or a portion of text within the NetSuite product, whether that's a vendor invoice, a customer support response, or a job description in an HR record." According to NetSuite, about one in three of its customers currently uses the Text Enhance tools to improve productivity, minimise errors, and craft contextually relevant content across different company departments. The new translation functionality is described as a significant extension of these capabilities. Business context awareness The company asserts that Text Enhance Translate differs from generic translation tools by deploying generative AI designed to understand both business and operational context. This includes interpreting intent, tone, industry jargon, and workflow-specific terminology. This approach, the company claims, is especially beneficial in handling business documents and specialised records across multiple industries and regions. "Unlike basic translation tools, Text Enhance Translate can understand your business context, your data, and your workflow, helping your teams collaborate more effectively across borders and languages." For example, a sales manager based in Tokyo is able to translate deal records from English to Japanese prior to discussing pricing with local leadership. Finance teams can interpret vendor contracts in French that are stored in NetSuite without waiting for a human translator. Likewise, customer support agents can respond to tickets in the original language submitted by the customer using the context-aware capabilities of the tool. Technology and usage Text Enhance Translate can be accessed from any text field in the NetSuite product, where users can select the translate option via the Text Enhance icon. The translation process will prioritise enabled languages based on each user's settings in NetSuite's multi-language configuration. For more complex requirements, NetSuite Admins and power users can utilise Prompt Studio to construct tailored workflows that combine translation operations with other AI-powered instructions. Additionally, developers are able to incorporate translation into custom processes via the SuiteScript GenAI API, such as automatically translating customer comments when synchronising with a customer relationship management system. Language support and deployment Text Enhance Translate is available in all markets where NetSuite Text Enhance is currently supported, with direct translation capabilities across over 20 languages. "With translation embedded directly into NetSuite workflows, customers can now onboard international employees faster, localise customer communications with confidence, and help reduce operational friction as they expand abroad." NetSuite indicates that the feature is now available to all customers using NetSuite Text Enhance, supporting global operational requirements as businesses continue to grow and engage in international activities.

Devon Funds Management head of retail Greg Smith said markets would be watching Trump's visit to the US Federal Reserve with interest, considering it's the first time in nearly two decades a sitting president has made the visit. 'It's more pressure for [Federal Reserve chairman] Jerome Powell. Markets have been aware of that, but then they've dismissed it as Trump has said he's got no plans to fire him,' Smith said. As for the earning season in the US, Google parent Alphabet reported quarterly profits that topped expectations, while Elon Musk's Tesla saw its revenue fall 12% – the sharpest decline in at least a decade. 'They're still copping a lot of competition from companies with more affordable EVs, then you've got the effect of boycotts on Tesla. It's been a pretty bad performance this year. 'Maybe there might be a bit more focus from Elon Musk.' Looking back home, Smith said Google's performance in cloud and data centre technologies could benefit Infratil, which operates as a landlord for some data centres in New Zealand. Japan's Ishiba to decide on resignation over election loss
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he will make a decision on resigning over a historic defeat of his ruling party in a weekend election after closely studying the tariff deal just struck with the United States. Ishiba has been under growing pressure to step down as his ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner, Komeito, lost their majority in the 248-member upper house, the smaller and less powerful of Japan's two-chamber parliament on Sunday, shaking his grip on power and Japan's political stability. The loss means Ishiba's ruling coalition, which also lost a majority in the more powerful lower house in October, now lacks a majority in both houses of parliament, making it even more difficult for his government to achieve any policy goals and worsening Japan's political instability. Ishiba had announced his intention Monday to stay on to tackle pressing challenges, including tariff talks with the US, without creating a political vacuum, sparking calls from inside and outside his own party for a quick resignation to respond to the election results. With the tariff deal with the US paving the way for his possible departure, Japanese media said he is expected to soon announce plans to step down in August. ADVERTISEMENT Ishiba welcomed the trade agreement today, which places a 15% tax on Japanese cars and other goods imported into the US from Japan, down from the initial 25%, saying it was a product of tough negotiations to protect the national interest and that it would help benefit both sides as they work together to create more jobs and investment.
