Donkey Kong Bananza is the next game to receive its own official Nintendo Direct, promising a wealth of new information about the destructible adventure.
With the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 and the debut of its roster of Switch 2 launch titles, including an exclusive Fortnite emote for the console, attention has now shifted to what's next. While the hardware itself is impressive, it's Nintendo's games that truly shine, and fans are eagerly awaiting proof that the company hasn't solely focused on framerate and performance improvements.
Enter, Donkey Kong. Occupying the spot in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct that many anticipated would be filled by a 3D Mario game, Donkey Kong Bananza demonstrated that DK still has the chops to lead a new exploratory adventure.
The game debuted with an exciting trailer, revealing a new, destructible world to explore alongside a new purple friend packed with minerals. This title, set to join the list of Nintendo Switch 2 games, looks incredibly exciting and seems poised to showcase the capabilities of its new home.
However, the trailer isn't the last we'll see of it, as a new Nintendo Direct dedicated exclusively to the game is in the works.
The implications this has for a full Nintendo Direct arriving soon aside, this is incredibly exciting and means that we're in for a genuinely in-depth look at the game we simply didn't receive in its Treehouse spotlight. So, when can we actually see the new showcase? Here's how to watch the Donkey Kong Bananza Direct. READ MORE: When is the next Fortnite update? The Donkey Kong Bananza Direct showcase is set to begin at 6am PDT / 9am EDT / 2pm BST on Wednesday, June 18. The Direct will be broadcast on YouTube. Watch the Donkey Kong Bananza Direct on YouTube
The showcase will last for 15 minutes, and will deliver some new looks at gameplay of the game, presumably that we hadn't seen at the previous Nintendo Treehouse shows.
Hype is high for Donkey Kong Bananza, especially as right now, it is the next first-party title coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 since Mario Kart World. The pressure is on, and fingers are crossed everywhere that Nintendo can deliver on the game that, for many, is replacing a new 3D Mario game. And goodness knows that the standards for those are high.

Weirdly Mario Kart World is only the third best selling Switch 2 digital game

Surprising sales data suggests Mario Kart World isn't doing well digitally, but there's a simple explanation for why. Debates about its pricing aside, there's little denying that Mario Kart World is a fantastic game and a smart pick for a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title. Nintendo still hasn't shared any formal sales figures, but considering the Switch 2 itself keeps breaking sales records since its June launch, it can be assumed Mario Kart World is performing strongly too. Intriguingly, though, it's reported that Mario Kart World hasn't sold as much as you'd expect on the Switch 2's eShop. It's not even the second best performing digital game, with two others overtaking it in June. Instead, the best-selling digital Switch 2 game is episodic role-player Deltarune, the successor to the beloved Undertale, with it's newest two chapters launching the same day as the Switch 2. Shockingly, second place goes to Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, the boring instruction manual masquerading as a minigame collection. If you're curious, fourth and fifth place go to the Switch 2 ports of Minecraft and No Man's Sky. This is according to Newzoo, which compiled sales data from the Switch 2's eShop across six key markets: the UK, the US, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. As strange as this may seem, this data doesn't mean Mario Kart World has sold worse overall. The data doesn't account for physical sales so, if those were included, Mario Kart would comfortably take the top spot. It also likely doesn't account for anyone who downloaded Mario Kart World as part of the bundle Nintendo's selling. As a reminder, the bundle comes with a Switch 2 and a digital copy of the game for £429.99. Since the console and a digital copy of Mario Kart World individually cost £395.99 and £66.99 respectively, you're essentially getting the game for £34, making it a very attractive offer. It's hard to imagine most Nintendo fans wouldn't go for this bundle unless they simply don't care for Mario Kart or specifically wanted a physical copy of the game despite its higher price tag of £74.99. Combined with Deltarune and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour being digital only games and costing much cheaper at £20.99 and £7.99 respectively, it makes a lot of sense why they'd outperform Mario Kart World on the eShop. Despite this, Newzoo reports that when looking strictly at the eShop's revenue share in June, Mario Kart World reigns supreme at 34%. The game also had the most monthly active users that month across both the Switch 2 and original Switch, beating other heavy hitters like Fortnite and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. More Trending All this is to say that while it's interesting to see Mario Kart World not be number one at something, it's hardly indicative that the game's in trouble despite what some fans disgruntled with how Nintendo's handling the online multiplayer will say. We're more curious to see if Mario Kart World can ever match the lifetime sales and longevity of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which launched in 2017, remains the best-selling Switch 1 game at 68.2 million units, and is still being regularly played today as evidenced by Newzoo's monthly active user data. Mario Kart World could start to struggle selling once Nintendo stops selling the Switch 2 bundle. Although no exact date has been given, Nintendo has said that the bundle will see a limited-time production until autumn 2025, at which point it'll only be available while stocks last. While we don't foresee the game ever seeing a price cut (first party Nintendo games rarely, if ever do), but Nintendo could introduce a new Mario Kart World bundle afterwards for the Christmas season or to coincide with the Super Mario Bros. movie sequel in April 2026. Fortnite live event countdown – the exact time you can watch the Blast Off event

For the first time ever, Fortnite OG is set to host its own live event. As the rocket launch draws near, players are eagerly anticipating what this unique showcase will bring. It appears we're on the brink of a brand-new era in Fortnite. The game has been a hit with fans, especially with the introduction of Fantastic Four cosmetics joining Superman in the Super Battle Pass, and players continue to enjoy the plethora of metahuman abilities on offer. With the recent addition of the Blitz Royale mode, it's been a great time for fans, but it seems a new first is coming to a different mode altogether. Fortnite OG is gearing up for its inaugural exclusive live event, Blast Off, which is expected to mirror the live event that kicked off everything back in the game's fourth season. This intriguing new event promises to immerse players in an experience that could either be incredibly familiar or completely revolutionary – and what's more, the Fortnite live event start time is fast approaching. This is a pretty big win for players who are almost exclusive to the OG mode, as they won't have to leave their comfort zone to see the event that kickstarted it all in a new world-first for the game. There's still a bit of time left to get ready, but it would be useful to know exactly how much time we have left – so here's the Fortnite live event countdown you've been waiting for to prepare for Blast Off. The countdown to the Fortnite live event has officially started, with Blast Off set to commence at 11am PDT / 2pm EDT / 7pm BST on Saturday, July 26. We first discovered this when we examined the Fortnite live event start date. As we approach the launch, you'll eventually see a countdown appearing over Fortnite's OG mode in-game, but until then, the above countdown will tick down to the moment the rocket ignites. The upcoming Fortnite live event has much to demonstrate, potentially heralding a new era of events that could span across the game's many modes. If this results in a major Brick Life event, we're going to be absolutely chuffed.

Lego Game Boy is so accurate even the advert is the same

A 1:1 recreation of the original Game Boy is the latest Lego Nintendo set, and it comes with two game cartridges and a hilarious ad. We hate to make you feel old, but the original Game Boy came out over 36 years ago now. It was outdated tech even when it first arrived but because it was the first viable portable console, with some great games, it went on to sell over 100 million units and remains iconic today, even to people that have probably never even seen one in real life. The Game Boy is the definitive portable console and now… there's a Lego version of it. It doesn't work, of course, but it does look just like the real thing and, unlike a lot of Lego sets, it isn't that expensive, at £54.99. It follows in an increasingly long line of Lego recreations of gaming hardware, starting with a brick-built NES and also including an Atari 2600 and a working (thanks to a crank on the side) Pac-Man arcade cabinet. The Game Boy set is exactly the same size as the original and comes with buildable cartridges of Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, which can be slotted into the back. (Tetris would've been a more obvious choice, but that would've involved Lego securing an additional licence). Rather than a single display, the only thing that's not a Lego brick is three interchangeable bits of plastic to show either the start screen or Zelda or Super Mario Land gameplay. The set also comes with a brick-built stand for the console itself, and whichever cartridge isn't slotted into it. It all looks amazingly authentic, not least because the Game Boy was always very chunky and suits being made out of Lego. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. In fact, it's so authentic that Lego has recreated the original US advert for the Game Boy on Instagram, complete with a man in robot suit made out of Lego bricks. To be honest, we don't remember if this ad was used in the UK or not. The only ones we remember for the Game Boy involved Rick Mayall, which unsurprisingly Lego has not recreated. The Lego Game Boy is set number 72046 and will go on sale, at Lego stores and the Lego website, on October 1. If you're worried it's going to sell out though, it is already up for pre-order online. More Trending Lego and Nintendo have had a close relationship for years now, with a line of Super Mario toys aimed primarily at adults and more expensive sets aimed at adults, that also includes a giant Mario Kart model and an animated one based on Super Mario World. To what degree Lego has the rights, or the inclination, to make sets based on other franchises has never been clear, but they've had an ongoing Animal Crossing line for a few years now and a new one based on Pokémon that's due next year. They also have a big adult-orientated set based on The Legend Of Zelda but so far no indication as to whether there'll be more. But then one of the reasons the two seem to get on so well is that they both love their secrecy. Although they do sometimes tease sets quite a way in advance, as the Game Boy one was first hinted at back in February. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter.
