Assam's Muslim population may equal Hindus by 2041: Himanta Biswa Sarma
He added that according to the 2011 survey, the Muslim population in the state was 34 per cent, out of which, 31 per cent were those who had migrated to the state. He claimed that out of the total Muslims in the state, only three per cent were indigenous Assamese Muslims.
"This is not my take, it is just the Census result. Today as per the 2011 Census, 34 per cent of the population is Muslim,' Sarma said, when asked whether indigenous people of Assam will become a minority in the state after a few years.
"...then the 31 per cent are the Muslims who had migrated to Assam. And if you project that for 2021, 2031 and 2041, you will come to almost a 50:50 position. I am just stating what the statistical census report says," he said.
What 2011 census says about Assam's Muslim population
As per the 2011 Census, Muslims constituted 34.22 per cent (1.07 crore) of Assam's total population of 3.12 crores, while Hindus made up approximately 61.47 per cent, with a population of 1.92 crore.
The BJP has consistently raised concerns over demographic shifts in the state. It points out that the number of Muslim-majority districts rose from six in 2001 to nine in 2011, and claims that it has further increased to at least 11, however, the 2021 census data is still pending, reported PTI.
In 2001, Assam had 23 districts. Out of them, six had Muslim-majority population. These were -- Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, Nagaon, Karimganj and Hailakandi.
In 2011, the number of districts in the state increased to 27 and the districts with Muslim majority population became nine, which includes Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, Morigaon, Nagaon, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Bongaigaon and Darrang.

The notice, written in Assamese, accused Das of illegally entering India from Bangladesh between 1966 and 1971, and sought his reply by May 21. Das appeared before the tribunal and presented his Aadhaar, voter ID and ration card as proof of his Indian citizenship, but these were not accepted. A worried Das then sought help from the district administration. Das said he went to Assam for work in 2001. During that time, Assam Police had detained him once, suspecting him to be a Bangladeshi. However, his employer there clarified that he was not a Bangladeshi. Based on this statement — and after verifying all his documents in Assam — the police had released him. Das returned home after working in Assam for about six months. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, 72-year-old Das said the tribunal officials asked for his father's voter list and identity papers. "I submitted my voter ID, Aadhaar and ration card to the tribunal, but they did not accept them. I was asked to show my father's name on the voter list. My father passed away some 45 years ago and I had no ready documents. Even though I have found that document now, I have decided not to approach the tribunal again," he claimed. Are they not Hindus? You are not allowing any community in Bengal to live in peace," Ghosh said. Das, now an egg-seller, has two sons and three daughters, all of whom are married and settled in Alipurduar. His wife died eight years ago. Locals said they have known Das for a long time. "I've known him since childhood. He's a bit older than me. Nishikanta has been here for a long time, only going to another state for work for a few months. Due to his age, he hasn't gone out of here for a long time now," said Sumit Barman, a neighbour.

Monsoon session: BJP to raise BBMP split, tunnel road plans in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: BJP has stepped up its opposition to the proposed tunnel road project and the plan to divide BBMP into five municipal corporations. Party MLAs from Bengaluru met in the city Saturday to chalk out a strategy and announced plans to raise both issues in the upcoming legislature session. The meeting was chaired by the opposition leader in the legislative assembly, R Ashoka, and BJP state president BY Vijayendra. Speaking to reporters, Ashoka accused the Congress govt of pursuing the BBMP split for electoral gains. "We don't object to the concept of a tunnel road. But they have allowed a dubious company to prepare the DPR. The company was caught copying details from another project and fined Rs 15 lakh. After this, the company should have been blacklisted, not given further responsibility worth Rs 7-8 crore." He warned, "Metro is already being constructed underground in Bengaluru. If a tunnel road is built beneath it, it could compromise safety." Echoing Ashoka's views, Vijayendra said, "Projects like the underground tunnel road and the division of BBMP into five are not in the best interest of the city.
