No. 1 Texas A&M stays alive, forces Game 7 vs. Liberty with trip to super regionals on the line

New York Times19-05-2025
After a seventh inning that had Aggies fans holding their breath Sunday, Texas A&M escaped to send its regional-round matchup against Liberty to extra innings, where the Aggies avoided elimination with a 14-11 victory.
With the win, Texas A&M forced an immediate Game 7 against Liberty on Sunday night, with the winner advancing to the super regionals. Texas A&M is seeking its first national title since 1987, while Liberty looks to make its first super regionals.
Game 7 is already underway in Bryan-College Station, Texas. It can be streamed on ESPN+ and ESPN2.

Liberty got off to a fast start in the first Sunday meeting, taking a 6-0 lead after two innings. But an 11-1 run by the Aggies over the next four innings gave them an 11-7 edge heading into the bottom of the seventh.
There, Liberty scored three runs in four at-bats to pull within one score, 11-10. With the bases loaded, Liberty senior Alyssa Henault walked up to home plate to face pitcher Kate Munnerlyn. The Texas A&M freshman hit Henault, sending Liberty redshirt junior Savanah Whatley home.

With the score even at 11, coach Trisha Ford made a pitching change, swapping Munnerlyn for freshman Sydney Lessentine.
Lessentine walked into no small task. With the bases loaded and two outs, the pressure was at its peak. The count grew to 3-2, and a flyout by Liberty senior KK Madrey sent the game to extra innings, allowing Aggies fans to finally catch a breath.
Texas A&M scored three runs in the top of the eighth, while holding Liberty to three straight outs in the bottom of the eighth, to keep the super regionals hopes alive.
'This team is gritty and we're not going to give up until the very last out,' Texas A&M junior Kennedy Powell said on the broadcast after the game.
'This team is a bunch of dogs. We got one more.'
Powell recorded three hits, one run and four RBIs. Star hitter Mya Perez recorded three RBIs en route to breaking the program's single-season RBI record with 73.

After Liberty stunned Texas A&M in the second game of its regional-round bracket, the Aggies blew out Marist 17-4 to avoid elimination and set up the rematch with the Flames. Texas A&M needed to beat Liberty in the first game Sunday to force another in order to advance out of the double-elimination round.

Texas OL coach says LT is locked down, but a camp battle is raging for RT

After filling in nicely when needed last year, redshirt sophomore Trevor Goosby will take over at left tackle this season on the Texas Longhorns offensive line. But Texas offensive line coach Kyle Flood says the other side is still a position to be claimed. The 6-foot-7, 309-pound Goosby did a great job taking Kelvin Banks' place last year when the former Longhorn went down to an ankle injury. "We feel like he's a starter,' Sarkisian said in April. "I mean, he got thrust into the games against A&M, Georgia, Clemson. He was ready." Flood praised the redshirt sophomore's versatility in this week's media availability. "We got to a point last year where I said, 'OK, Trevor is our third tackle.' And he can play both sides. ... Trevor did a great job stepping in for us," Flood said. Left tackle is locked in with Goosby, but right tackle is another story. There are two players in a heated position battle for the key spot on the offensive line. "There's definitely going to be a camp battle," Flood said. "For sure. We've got a couple of guys that have been playing there in the spring in Andre Cojoe and Brandon Baker, who have done a really nice job. A really nice job. Both those guys have changed their bodies and improved their skill sets." Baker played in eight games during the 2024 season. Cojoe saw time in four games. Both players are sophomores. Flood says the quality of the Texas defense is a big advantage when getting the offensive side of the ball ready for the season. It's especially true in position battles. "I think one of the advantages we have is we're going to play against a really talented edge group in training camp," Flood said." So I think these guys are going to get challenged on a day to day basis." Either way, Flood is confident it will all work out. "We'll figure out in training camp how that all plays out," he said. "Both guys are going to go out and compete and we'll see how it plays out in training camp." Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire.

Rangers Linked To Shocking Deal For $5.9M Closer At Trade Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Texas Rangers have floated around .500 for a while now, and it's kept them firmly in the postseason race. With a few months to go in the season and the Rangers only half a game back of the third wild-card spot in the American League, it's safe to assume Texas will be buying a little bit at the trade deadline. The Rangers have multiple needs at the deadline, but they can patch a few of these holes with affordable options in the next few days. Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently reported the Rangers had been in contact with the Pittsburgh Pirates about a potential deal for closer David Bednar. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 7: David Bednar #51 of the Pittsburgh Pirates celebrates with Henry Davis #32 after the final out in a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies during the game at PNC Park... PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 7: David Bednar #51 of the Pittsburgh Pirates celebrates with Henry Davis #32 after the final out in a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies during the game at PNC Park on June 7, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. More"The (Detroit) Tigers, (Philadelphia) Phillies, and Rangers are three clubs that have contacted the Pirates about Bednar," Hiles wrote. "With a handful of others likely interested, general manager Ben Cherington is looking to sell high on his blue-chip bullpen asset. "Per league sources, the asking price for Bednar has included, at minimum, an organization's top-five prospect. While for some relievers this could be viewed as an ambitious goal, one league source suggests this to be a fair starting point for a player of Bednar's caliber." Trading for Bednar would be a huge for the Rangers. The closer's role hasn't been great in Texas, and adding Bednar would give them the solution they need. Bednar is also more than a rental. He's under contract through next season and would stay in Texas beyond these next few months. The Rangers would go into next season with a clear option at closer. The asking price of a top-five prospect might be steep, but the Rangers seem desperate. If they want to compete for a World Series again, it's time for them to make some big moves. Angels get to deGrom and stop Rangers' 6-game win streak with 6-4 victory

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Kevin Newman, Taylor Ward and Luis Rengifo homered to help the Los Angeles Angels beat Texas 6-4 on Monday night, snapping the Rangers' six-game win streak. Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 19th save. The 37-year-old Jansen hasn't allowed an earned run in 16 consecutive appearances, the longest active streak in the American League and the third-longest of his career. Connor Brogdon (2-1) replaced Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz in the fifth and gave up one run in 1 2/3 innings. Kochanowicz, called up from Triple-A Salt Lake earlier in the day, allowed two runs — none earned — in 4 2/3 innings. Newman's two-run shot opened the scoring in the third, and Zach Neto added an RBI double in the fifth. Josh Jung hit a solo homer and Jonah Heim had an RBI single for the Rangers. Josh Smith and Corey Seager scored when Adolis García reached on an error by right fielder Gustavo Campero, who bobbled a routine flyball. Jacob deGrom (10-3), who was 6-0 in his previous 10 starts, gave up five runs and seven hits with eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner has allowed at least one home run in five consecutive games in the same season for the first time in his 12-year career. Ward's leadoff homer in the sixth gave the Angels the lead for good, and Rengifo added a two-run drive off reliever Jacob Webb to make it 6-3. The Angels, who beat Seattle 4-1 on Sunday, have won back-to-back games for the first time since defeating Arizona on July 11 and 12. Patrick Corbin (6-7, 3.78 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Texas on Tuesday against Yusei Kikuchi (4-7, 3.23) in the middle game of the series.
