Journalists across Assam on Saturday protested the use of derogatory words against a local television channel reporter by a state cabinet minister, even as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tendered an apology for any defamatory statement by his colleague.State Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah had on Friday refused to answer a question posed by the reporter of a local news satellite channel, with which the BJP leader has been locked in a feud over allocation of government dairy promotion scheme funds and buying of Gir cows from a state-funded project in the name of a firm owned by his wife.Baruah, at that press conference, had said that he would not answer to "low-class" people like the reporter and would respond to the owner of the channel, 'Pratidin Time'.Guwahati-based journalists participated in a protest organised by the Gauhati Press Club (GPC), condemning such recurring incidents of verbal insult of scribes by politicians of different parties.Referring to the latest instance, the protesting journalists demanded an apology from the minister and assurance from all quarters of no further recurrence of such abuse of media persons.Protests by journalists were organised in different parts of the state, including Sivasagar, Samaguri and Dibrugarh as journalists wore black badges and raised slogans against the minister.Asked for his reaction to Baruah's statement, Sarma said, "If he has said anything derogatory to any journalist, he should apologise. I will myself tell him to do so as journalists are not part of our political feuds.""I also apologise for it, though I haven't heard what he had said," the chief minister added.Sarma maintained that if Baruah had said anything bad, it must have been "a slip of the tongue" as he himself comes from humble beginnings."You (journalists) know him well. He is himself from common or humble roots. We all are," Sarma said.Referring to spats between the ruling party and some media houses of the state, Sarma said, "Owners of media houses and journalists are different. Journalists are revered... if we say something about the owners, journalists should not interfere in it.""Media can criticise us, but don't take blame for your owners," he added, directing the comment to the journalists. The chief minister said that media house owners have diverse business interests and they may face action for lapses or breaking the law in these also, but it should be not projected as the person is being "targeted" due to his media investment.Claiming that media house owners have high incomes from various sources like government contracts, Sarma said the journalists employed by them should also be paid well."Journalists here are paid the least. They don't have their own house. When anyone falls ill, they come to me seeking help. I am always happy to help, but the owners should also give them at least Rs 10 lakh," he said.He claimed that the situation of district and rural area correspondents is even worse as they are still paid on per news basis."The rural journalists tell me that they will be paid about Rs 100 for every news that they file and is used. That's why I always give byte to them so that their news is used and their payment can be assured," Sarma said. The chief minister also advocated for the fixation of minimum pay for journalists and eight-hour shifts for journalists.

Patnaik expresses anguish over ‘terrible mess' during Rath Yatra, BJP hits back
'But it's impossible not to voice our deep concern and anguish over how things unfolded during the most sacred event in our state,' he said. In a social media post, the former chief minister said, 'All we can do is pray. May Mahaprabhu Jagannath forgive all those responsible for the terrible mess that has overshadowed this divine festival this year.' He stopped short of directly blaming the administration but said it was impossible not to voice concern over how events unfolded. Bhubaneswar, Jun 28 (PTI) A day after Lord Jagannath's chariot failed to reach its destination on time during the Rath Yatra in Puri, political tempers flared in Odisha on Saturday with BJD chief Naveen Patnaik calling the delay a 'terrible mess', prompting the ruling BJP to accuse the opposition party of engaging in 'vicious politics.' Patnaik, currently recuperating at a Mumbai hospital after surgery, expressed deep anguish over the disruption. 'The Nandighosh chariot stood still at the Singhadwar till 7.45 PM, only to move a few metres before the day ended. This has left lakhs of devotees disillusioned,' Patnaik wrote. In his post, Patnaik recalled that it is hard to forget that last year Lord Balabhadra's idol slipped during the 'Adapa Bije Pahandi' (procession on way to Shree Gundicha temple), a moment that left countless devotees shaken. Responding to Patnaik's remarks, state Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, without naming Patnaik, criticised the BJD for making 'political statements while recovering from jaundice,' implying that they don't understand the will of Lord Jagannath. 'In the past, the BJD government made mistakes and insulted Lord Jagannath. Since 1977, the chariots have always reached the Gundicha Temple on the second day,' he claimed. Harichandan also said this year's Rath Yatra had been 'incident-free' and warned, 'Those doing politics over the Lord's festival will face consequences—if not today, then tomorrow.' At a press conference, BJD vice-president Pratap Jena demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Law Minister Harichandan, holding them morally responsible for the delay and crowd mismanagement. Meanwhile, Congress leader and former minister Prasad Harichandan accused the BJP of sidelining experienced officials and letting party leaders handle the Rath Yatra arrangements. He also raised questions about the alleged influence of industrialist Gautam Adani on the scheduling of the chariot pulling. 'There were reports that Adani was to visit Puri and pull the chariot. Did the government postpone the pulling for his's visit?' he asked. Harichandan further cited a remark made by SJTA Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee, who reportedly said that perhaps 'the Lord chose to stay back as some devotees didn't arrive.' 'Who was that comment directed at? Isn't it a hint toward Adani?' the Congress leader asked. The Congress also demanded a judicial inquiry into the alleged mismanagement, claiming that over 600 devotees were injured or fell ill due to overcrowding. BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal rejected the opposition's claims, calling them baseless and politically motivated. 'The Rath Yatra has been conducted transparently and successfully. Congress's allegations about Adani show their weak mentality,' he said. Biswal also accused the previous BJD government of failing Lord Jagannath during the Nabakalebar festival in 2015. Meanwhile, after being halted on the night of June 27 due to the Taladhwaja chariot of Lord Balabhadra getting stuck while negotiating a turn, the chariots reached their destination, Gundicha Temple, the deities aunt's residence around 1.30 pm. War of words as BJP youth neta held in Odisha over gold theft
Kolkata/West Midnapore: A BJP youth wing neta was arrested near Odisha 's Jaleswar while attempting to flee after stealing about 100 grams of gold from a jewellery shop, triggering a political war of words. According to sources, the arrested Somnath Sahoo is a resident of Midnapore's Habibpur area. The incident took place around 1.30pm on Thursday, when Sahoo stole ornaments from the Jaleswar shop and escaped in his SUV. A dramatic chase ensued as shop staffers and locals pursued Sahoo, ending with the latter's SUV crashing into a divider about 8km from Jaleswar, near Lakshannath Road area. Locals handed Sahoo over to the police. He was arrested on Thursday night. At a press conference in Kolkata on Saturday, Trinamool showed Sahoo's photos with BJP netas and claimed he was BYJM's district secretary. Making an indirect reference to how BJP had attacked TMC in the south Kolkata campus rape case using photos of the primary accused with TMC netas, party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: "BJYM neta Somnath Sahoo... was caught stealing in Odisha and it is all on CCTV. There is a photo of him with Sukanta Majumdar. So, did Sukanta Majumdar send him to carry out the theft? Was there some setting or sharing involved? BJP must clarify this. If these people can show Trinamool photos and make tall claims, why not clarify their own stance after being photographed with a dacoit?" Police of a BJP-governed state arrested Sahoo. Hiraan and Sukanta must answer why they were photographed with him," Ghosh said and added that Sahoo's wife was a BJP candidate in Midnapore municipality elections. Countering Ghosh, Chatterjee said: "The photo was clicked ahead of the 2021 election. I was on the streets campaigning and thousands of people had come to see me, and took photos. It's not possible for me to know whether those taking pictures are thieves or robbers." "The arrest is laudable. BJP is in office in Odisha, but the state's police did not see political colour and I congratulate them for this," he added. BYJM president Indranil Khan, however, said that Sahoo was not an active member. "He didn't even apply for membership during our drive. He might have attended a few programmes and clicked some selfies but the party has no link with him now," said Khan.

Manimajra's 24x7 water supply project hits turbulence; MC internal report, Chandigarh BJP chief flag major flaws
1 2 3 4 Chandigarh: What was once hailed as a flagship initiative under the 'Viksit Bharat' vision is now under intense scrutiny. The ambitious 24x7 water supply pilot project in Manimajra, inaugurated with much fanfare by Union home minister Amit Shah in Aug 2024, has hit turbulent waters. Amid growing concerns and political pressure, Punjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria is set to convene a high-level meeting to dissect the project's faltering progress. The move comes in the wake of a strongly worded letter from Chandigarh BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra to the Union home minister, expressing alarm over the project's execution. Sources confirm that the ministry of home affairs has since forwarded the letter to the UT Administrator, prompting urgent administrative attention. The project, spearheaded by Chandigarh Smart City Limited and executed through a Rajasthan-based agency, was envisioned to revolutionize water supply in Manimajra — transitioning from intermittent to round-the-clock pressurized water delivery, complete with smart metering and automated control systems. But the reality on the ground paints a starkly different picture. A confidential internal report by the Engineering Department of the Municipal Corporation has laid bare a series of alarming discrepancies: No zone in Manimajra has achieved 24x7 pressurized water supply; pressure reducing valves (PRVs) and variable frequency drive (VFD) pumping systems remain non-operational; major lapses in the construction of underground reservoirs, pumping stations, and the rollout of the SCADA automation system; and much-touted smart water meters are yet to be fully deployed. The project was awarded through an e-tender at a staggering Rs 165.86 crore, split into capital expenditure (capex) — Rs 74.56 crore — and operational expenditure (OPEX) — Rs 91.29 crore. Despite the scale of investment, the outcomes have been underwhelming — a fact that has not gone unnoticed by local leadership. Malhotra has reportedly warned that the project's failure is damaging the BJP's image and undermining the Prime Minister's development agenda. What's Next? With the spotlight now firmly on the project, the upcoming meeting chaired by Kataria is expected to be a turning point. Malhotra's letter to Shah In a letter to Amit Shah, Chandigarh BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra said, "In August 2024, a project was inaugurated by you, in the presence of administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, chief secretary Rajeev Verma, and other dignitaries, for 24-hour water supply with proper pressure for all floors. The funds amounting to Rs 75 crore were allocated for the project under the smart city mission. The reality of this project clearly reflects that the whole project has collapsed, and nobody is held accountable and responsible for this wastage of Rs 75 crore. Sir, on one side, taxes are being imposed on the public, and on the other, Rs 75 crore have been wasted. Certainly, there are policy lapses or a lack of accountability in the system of administration of UT Chandigarh. The media reports are causing grave damage to our reputation in public at large and are also not in tune with our visionary Prime Minister's dream of VIKSIT BHARAT: 2047. Your good self is thus humbly requested to intervene in the matter and call for a detailed inquiry report on the same."
