Union trade M Daniel Gazdag to Crew for up to $4.5M

Reuters11-04-2025
April 11 - The Columbus Crew acquired midfielder Daniel Gazdag from the Philadelphia Union on Friday in exchange for up to $4.5 million.
The Union receive $4 million guaranteed and up to an additional $500,000 if certain performance metrics are met by the 29-year-old Hungarian, who departs as Philadelphia's all-time leading scorer.
"We are thrilled to add a high-impact player of Daniel's pedigree to our team. He is an experienced player who has proven to be one of the top players in our league over the past few years," Crew general manager Issa Tall said. "His high soccer IQ, work ethic on and off the ball, and competitive spirit will be a great addition to our team.
"Daniel's profile is one we were looking for to complement our current group, and we are excited to see him get started in the Black & Gold."
Gazdag recorded 59 goals and 20 assists while playing more than 10,000 minutes in 125 matches (115 starts) since joining the Union in 2021. He has two goals and two assists in six matches this season.
Gazdag was an MLS Best XI selection in 2022, leading the Union to the MLS Cup Final that season with 22 goals in 34 matches.
"Daniel's contributions to the club have been invaluable," Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said. "Since joining the Union, he has been an integral part of the team's success, and we are deeply grateful for everything he has done for the organization.
"At this time, we believe this move is in the best interest of both the club and player. The financial flexibility it provides will allow us to further invest and strengthen our roster, while also providing opportunities for other players who we are confident can step in to the role. Additionally, this gives Daniel the opportunity to pursue what makes the most sense for him in the next chapter in his career. We know Daniel will continue to find great success, and we wish him nothing but the best."
Gazdag played for eight seasons with Budapest Honved FC in Hungary's top league before coming to MLS.
Gazdag will occupy a Designated Player roster spot for Columbus. He is under contract through 2025 with an option for 2026.
His offense will help the Crew overcome the February departures of forward Cucho Hernandez to La Liga's Real Betis and forward Christian Ramirez to the LA Galaxy.
The first opportunity for Gazdag to face the Union will be on May 10 when Columbus visits Chester, Pa.
The move opens up a Designated Player spot for Philadelphia, which previously sold midfielder Jack McGlynn to the Houston Dynamo for $3.4 million in February.

EU and Japan agree to work together to promote free trade and economic security

Leaders of the European Union and Japan launched an alliance Wednesday aimed at boosting economic cooperation, defending free trade and countering unfair trade practices as the two sides face growing challenges from the United States and China. The agreement followed a meeting among European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. It comes just as Tokyo and Washington reached a new trade deal, which places 15% tariffs on Japanese cars and other goods imported into the U.S., down from an initial 25%. The leaders agreed to launch 'competitiveness alliance" aimed at stepping up trade, economic security and cooperation in innovation, energy and other areas, according to a joint statement released by the EU. The leaders also supported 'a stable and predictable rules-based free and fair economic order,' and reaffirmed the importance of Japan-EU cooperation to uphold multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core, as well as with other multilateral cooperation efforts. The EU and Japan also agreed to strengthen defense industry cooperation and to start talks on an information security agreement. Japan and the EU have been stepping up their security and defense cooperation amid growing global tensions and conflicts, including Russia's war on Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East and increasingly assertive China's military activity in Asia, recognizing that challenges in Europe and Indo-Pacific are inseparable.

Phillies turn to Jesus Luzardo in bid for sweep of Red Sox

July 23 - After two terrific outings from their starting pitchers to begin their series against the visiting Boston Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies will turn to Jesus Luzardo in hopes of completing a sweep on Wednesday. Zack Wheeler allowed two runs in six innings in Monday's 3-2 victory and then Cristopher Sanchez raised the bar Tuesday with a complete game, allowing only four hits in a 4-1 triumph. The Phillies' two starters combined to strike out 22 batters without a walk. "They just feed off each other," Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said after Sanchez's 12-strikeout gem. "They want to be better than the last guy. It's a good competition." Max Kepler and Kyle Schwarber hit solo homers on Tuesday as the Phillies won back-to-back games for the first time since July 5 and 6. "This is a really good team that we have in here obviously," said Bryce Harper, who scored on a catcher's interference. "We've just got to keep playing our baseball and coming through when we need to." Meanwhile in the visiting dugout, manager Alex Cora is challenging his team to step it up against All-Star caliber pitching. Boston's Roman Anthony is 1-for-9 with eight strikeouts in the series. "Two of the best pitchers in the majors," Cora said of Wheeler and Sanchez. "That's the reason they're good. If we want to play in October, we have to find a way to hit those guys." The Phillies hope to ride the momentum behind Luzardo (8-5, 4.29 ERA), who did not make it out of the fifth inning in his last start. The left-hander lasted only 4 2/3 innings Friday, allowing four runs and seven hits in a 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. He did not figure into the decision. "Extremely frustrating, especially when the offense gives you four runs early," Luzardo said. "If you ask any starter in the league, if the offense gives you four runs, it should be a win for the team no matter what, so I feel like obviously this loss was on me." Philadelphia has won just three of the last 10 games started by Luzardo, who will be facing Boston for the second time in his career. On June 29, 2023, he limited the Red Sox to three hits over six scoreless innings in a 2-0 win as a member of the Miami Marlins. He was not credited with a decision. Boston will turn to Lucas Giolito (6-2, 3.59), who had a personal six-game winning streak halted in his most recent start. The right-hander gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs on Friday en route to his first defeat since May 6 in the 4-1 game. "It's a bad way to start the series and the second half," Giolito said. "I've got to be a tone-setter. I didn't do that. Two walks and a home run -- three runs in the first inning -- puts us on our heels, so I've got to be better than that." Giolito is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in two lifetime starts against the Phillies, both of which came in 2023. --Field Level Media
