Bertie Gregory and other experts explain how to not get eaten by a shark
Sharks have been on Earth for longer than trees, and there are more than 500 species—from the infamous great white and iconic hammerhead to the gentle whale shark and pocket-sized dwarf lanternshark.
(This was the best place on Earth to see great white sharks—then they vanished.)
Regardless of size, sharks can be unpredictable, so it's important that those who share the water with them have knowledge of, experience, and respect for the animal.
So what does it take to swim with sharks? Ahead of National Geographic's Sharks Up Close With Bertie Gregory premiere on July 5, streaming on Disney+ and Hulu the next day, we talked to shark experts to find out how they prepare for these endeavors.
While filming the show, National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory experienced his 'all-time favorite' shark dive in the 'spooky' Cathedral underwater cave in South Africa's Aliwal Shoal reef.
(Cape Cod may have the highest density of great white sharks in the world.)
As many as 40 spotted ragged-tooth sharks 'were just swirling around in this cave,' he says. Growing to around 10 feet long, these seemingly menacing creatures have 'terrifying looking mouths with hundreds of needle-sharp teeth.'
But Gregory wasn't afraid. 'Fear comes from a lack of understanding,' he says. He knows that needle-like teeth are designed for grabbing rather than slicing, which means 'prey needs to be a size they can swallow. I'm too big to fit down their throat, so they can't chew me.'
Even great whites—probably the most feared fish on the planet—aren't mindless man eaters. 'We're not on their menu,' says Gregory. 'We're low in fat, and we taste funny.' Adult white sharks have evolved to eat seals and sea lions because of their energy-dense blubber, as opposed to us sinewy humans.
Although shark bites are incredibly rare—there were 47 unprovoked bites in 2024, according to the International Shark Attack File—the best way to prevent any incident is to understand the conditions and the animal's behavior.
Shark scientist Melissa Cristina Márquez, who didn't appear on the show but has been diving with sharks for over a decade, always carefully reviews environmental factors before getting in the water with any shark species, but especially large ones.
'I never enter the water if there's a strong scent trail from bait or carcasses, unless it's a controlled research setting,' she says. For an experienced professional like Márquez, safety protocols are a non-negotiable. This includes working with a highly trained crew, following clear procedures, and using a safety pole when needed to make sure there is always something between you and an overly curious shark.
Time of day is also important. Predatory sharks tend to hunt at dusk and dawn, so experienced professionals usually avoid these times, especially when the water is murky. 'If they're hunting in poor visibility water, they could mistake a human for a seal,' says Gregory.
By the time a large predatory shark has taken a test bite and realized the human isn't food, the victim likely has catastrophic injuries, he says. 'It's about not giving them the opportunity to make a mistake.'
Some factors, however, are impossible for researchers to know beforehand—like how the animal is feeling. 'Is it hungry? Is it full? Is it hunting? Is it happy? Is it healthy?' asks Lacey Williams, a shark behavioral ecologist who appeared on the show. 'We can't ask, unfortunately.'
Sharks give off signals if you know how to read their body language. Signs that a shark feels uncomfortable or agitated include jerky movements, raising its head, lowering its pectoral fins to point downwards, and arching its back.
If Márquez notices an exaggerated swishing tail, the animal making tighter circles, bumping objects around it, or several close passes, 'that's a signal that it is time to exit the water calmly and quickly,' she says.
When you're in the water with sharks, it's important to stay calm, move slowly, avoid sudden movements, and 'have a healthy respect for what that animal is capable of,' says Williams. Always 'have your head on a swivel,' she says. Don't turn your back to the shark and always maintain eye contact. As ambush predators, sharks are less likely to see you as potential prey if you keep your eyes on them at all times.
Although it's sensible to be cautious, a shark isn't going to try to chomp on any human it sees. Many species—including hammerheads, puffadder shysharks and thresher sharks—tend to be timid and avoid divers.
(This is how we can share our coasts with sharks.)
For predatory species like tiger, bull, and white sharks, going after a meal uses up valuable energy, so they need to know their efforts will be worth the reward—and that they won't get injured themselves.
Márquez says she stays vertical in the water to appear as large and off-putting as possible, joking that she's not sure 'how much that actually works in my favor at a meager 5 foot 1.'
Experts also consider how to prevent stressing out the sharks. 'These are wild animals, and every encounter should be on their terms,' Márquez says. That means giving them plenty of space and never chasing or cornering them. 'Swimming with sharks is a privilege, not a thrill-seeking stunt,' she adds.
Most importantly, never, ever try to touch a shark. 'None of us really like being touched without our consent,' adds Williams, so the same goes for sharks and other animals.
Some experts worry that the rise of social media footage of professionals interacting with sharks encourages people to take unnecessary risks—and sometimes get hurt. People 'think they can just go up and touch them or ride them, and that's very much not the case,' Williams says, even for docile species.
When it comes to sharks, people are usually concerned about the wrong thing, says Gregory. With these majestic animals threatened by human activities—including overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution—he says, 'we've spent far too long worrying about sharks when we should be worried for them.'

Frozen Facts That Will Forever Change How You Watch
There were only a few movies in the 2010s that garnered as much obsession as the Disney animated film Frozen. Following the success of Tangled, it felt like princess movies were back on a whole new level. You couldn't go into a store without some Olaf memorabilia or "Let It Go" blasting on the radio. Here are 21 cool Frozen movie facts that will make you go watch it again on Disney+: Although it may be surprising, Frozen, released in 2013, was the first Disney film directed by a woman. Directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck collaborated on the project, making Lee the first woman to direct a Disney animated film in 52 projects. Filmmakers invited a real-life reindeer onto the set to gain a better understanding of the animal's behavior, which helped them create the character of Sven. (The reindeer, not that funny-looking donkey) Opening weekend for Frozen was, well, cold. The film only made $67.4M in its opening weekend. Turns out, word of mouth and reviews did the heavy lifting after those three days, because the film earned $1.28B in total at the global box-office. Yes, that "B" is BILLION. In the first Frozen, Elsa is confirmed to be 21 years old. This makes her the oldest Disney princess ever! On the topic of ages, Hans is 23 years old in the first movie. In addition to being the youngest brother in his family, he is also the youngest villain in a non-Pixar Disney film. I emphasize "non-Pixar" film because "Happy Child" Sid (Toy Story) is still our youngest antagonist. I'd say Sid is more of a troubled child, whereas Hans is just a P.O.S. (Piece of Snow). "Let It Go," although the one of the most popular Disney songs to date, wasn't much of a challenge. It only took composers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez a day to write a demo. That pen must've been on fire. The opening song, "Do You Want To Build A Snowman?" was almost left in the cold. According to Anna's voice actor, Kristen Bell, "[the song] was not put back in the film until the witching hour before we released it." We almost had to say, "okay, byeee," to one of the more emotional songs in the film. Arendelle is based on real Norwegian towns. Bergen, Norway was a major inspiration to the design of the buildings and how the town sat on the water. Elsa was actually going to be the villain. In the fairy tale the film is loosely based on, "The Snow Queen," the queen is actually the baddie. Her alternate character design was evil, heartless, and dare I Hans Christian Andersen, the author of "The Snow Queen," plays a huge role in Hans, Kristoff, and Anna are all based on the name of the fairy tale writer — a pretty cool homage if you ask me. The cast actually recorded their line reads together, which is an uncommon practice when it comes to recording voice-overs for animated films. There are plenty of animation marvels in Frozen, but Elsa's hair might take the cake. She has almost half a million hair strands that had to be animated. Sven's original name was going to be Thor, as in God of Thunder. One can only assume another Disney-owned character undercut the original name since the acquisition of Marvel happened around the same time as Frozen's production. The voice of Oaken (yoo-hoo, big summer blowout) is also that of Frozen's storyboard artist Chris Williams. Williams is a director, writer, and has helped write stories we love like Moana, Prep & Landing, The Emperor's New Groove, and Mulan. The beloved song "Let It Go" is available in 41 different languages. Rick Dempsey, Senior Vice President of Creative for Disney Character Voices International, said, "We held auditions all over the world," in order to find the right international voices for Elsa. We see evil queens and majestic queens throughout the history of Disney films, but Elsa is technically the first Disney princess ever shown crowned queen. Again, in 50+ Disney movies, whenever you see a first, you know it's magical. The snow monster was originally not-so-scary at all. In fact, the original version was just a giant-sized Olaf and acknowledged as a "brother" to Olaf. It didn't quite have the same impact that they had wanted, since the character was meant to be intimidating, not silly. When Olaf is told to give Anna a minute alone with Elsa, he proceeds to count to 60. Well, if you watch the whole scene and time it, the mischievous snowman makes good on his word. It is EXACTLY 60 seconds. Actor Alan Tudyk was actually in back-to-back Disney movies: Wreck-It-Ralph (2012) and Frozen (2013). He voiced King Candy and then The Duke of Weaseltown...I mean, Weselton. This would lead him to voice acting for numerous Disney characters. The ice castle changes colors to reflect Elsa's emotions. In a way, it works like a mood ring, fitting the proper emotions of the scene: dark colors for anger and fear, and warmer colors for when she speaks with her sister. Kristoff was originally going to punch Hans, but the filmmakers found more satisfaction in Anna getting the honors. It really wouldn't have made any sense storyline-wise, so the change was the correct one. Hans is, however, seen rubbing his chin, implying either Kristoff or Sven punched him. 29 Thoughts I Had While Watching The First Ep Of "Secret Lives Of Mormon Wives"
🚨CONTENT WARNING🚨 If you've been on the internet lately, then I'm sure you've seen all the buzz around The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. The second season recently concluded in the most dramatic reunion. So, to keep up with the masses, I decided to watch the first episode! To my shock and awe, it's not a sequel to The Secret Life of The American Teenager. Though, spoiler alert, they're not that far off from one another! Going into this journey, my knowledge of Mormonism didn't extend past The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, The Book of Mormon and a soda shop called Sips. At the very least, whether I like the show or not, I'm excited to learn something new! And if that comes with drama, then so be it. (Spoiler alert: I learned nothing, but there was a lot of drama.) So, even though no one asked, here are all the thoughts I had while watching the first episode: Before we jump in, here's the synopsis that Hulu gives for The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: "The scandalous world of a group of Mormon mom influencers implodes when they get caught in the midst of a swinging sex scandal that makes international headlines. Now, their sisterhood is shook to its core. Faith, friendship and reputations are all on the line. Will #MomTok be able to survive and continue to give the rulebook a run for its money, or will this group fall from grace?" Talk about starting off with a bang, am I right? The fact that "Unholy" by Sam Smith ft. Kim Petras is the first song we hear tells me all that I need to know about this series going forward. All I can say is that I AM LOCKED IN! Is this relegated Mormon-wear? Or did they just get a really good deal at T.J. Maxx? A child having a child... I'm not judging! But I am wary... So it appears that #MomTok was created by Taylor Frankie Paul and it was supposed to showcase a new generation of Mormon women. They danced, they cussed, they hooked up with each other's is the future, people! We're meeting our ladies — this season will feature: Whitney, Mikayla, Jen, Jessi, Layla, Demi, Mayci, and Taylor. I was hoping that they would each get their own intro a la Real Housewives, but alas, they did not. Looks like the OGs of #MomTok were Taylor, Whitney, Mayci, and Mikayla. Kinda sad that Taylor's life imploded after the swinging came to light and even more sad that she couldn't talk to her mom friends for MONTHS. However, I am confused as to why Taylor felt the need to share activities? Was there a leak? Or did she think that the world needed to know how she and her friends got down? Seems like not EVERYTHING needed to be shared on the internet, but that's just me. Been there also, let's unpack this! Taylor is talking about her new boyfriend Dakota who is a cutie, but also, comes with drama — allegedly, he was hooking up with other girls at the beginning of their relationship. Meanwhile, Taylor is going through her divorce and co-parenting with her ex ALL WHILE dealing with a public scandal. If there were ever a time to be single, now is it girl! More info: Taylor shared that she and her ex were getting divorced because, while swinging, she stepped out on their marriage in a way that wasn't agreed upon at the time. Like, kudos to Taylor for taking also, I don't think this needed to be said on TikTok one coulda stayed in the drafts, IMO. To be honest, I still don't quite know what #MomTok stood (or stands) for but get your bag, I guess! A wise man once said: "Do it lady!" Any community who will judge you for your past wrongs is not a community you wanna be in! A lil' harsh, Mama Liann. I do not kink shame. All God's children! The not-so-secret lives of Mormon wives. Based off of the conversation between the ladies, it seems like a lot of these couples either need to be in open relationships or not in relationships at all... This is Demi. She is 29. She and her husband, Bret, have been married for three years. He is 46. Do with that information what you will. So, not ONLY is Taylor hopping into a new relationship months after her divorce and in the middle of a scandal, the man she's now dating is a recovering addict AND THEN she drops THIS bombshell? Do condoms not exist in Utah? I'm not even 20 minutes in and we have several sex scandals (swinging AND cheating), a potential pregnancy, a recovering drug sound like the set up to a really bad joke. ^Live footage of me watching all these women younger than me living the lives they live. The prodigal Whitney returns! Whitney and her family moved to Hawaii to escape the backlash from Taylor and #MomTok, but now she's back and better than ever? (Spoiler alert: She was not, in fact, better than ever). I'm any of these women actually like each other? Like, regardless of the scandal, are they even friends? I also wanna know why! Normalize keeping things to yourself! I thought one of the pillars of Mormonism was abstaining from pre-/extra-marital sex and alcohol. Perchance, the Mormon church isn't the one for you? Taylor, girl, this is a bad take: You hurt a lot of people / aired out a lot of dirty laundry...a little remorse would be a good thing. I have to remember that all these women are, like, early-to-mid 20s. Their frontal lobes are still developing! On one hand, I get it. On the other hand, Kim, there are people that are dying. Earlier in the episode, some of the #MomTok ladies were discussing a potential cheating scandal between Whitney and her husband, Conner. Whitney immediately shut it down, but looks like there was some truth to those rumors! Soft swinging? Lying? Cheating? DIVORCE, BABES. DIVORCE! Whitney just revealed that Conner has been sexting girls he met on Tinder for their entire marriage... To the tune of "Hot To Go" by Chappell Roan: D-I-V-O-R-C-E! Put the cameras down and get every single one of these women in therapy, I swear to God. I am speechless. This is not the reaction you should have when your "best friend" tells you about her miscarriage: After Whitney shared that Conner's been sexting other women their entire marriage, this is her reaction to Taylor's news. RELAX, MY GUY! In that same breath, Dakota says that he cannot be with anyone who "parties." Taylor says she won't give up alcohol. I believe this is what we call an impasse. WHAT IS GOING ON????? A neighborhood called the cops because there was a domestic dispute between Taylor and Dakota. And just like that... Shock. And. Awe. Somehow, I think they have bigger problems than this: I am Team Therapist! Wow. OK. Talk about an emotional roller coaster, one that I'm unfortunately on because I am officially hooked. Do I want to be? No. Am I going to binge-watch Seasons 1 and 2 like it's my job? Absolutely. Watch The Secret Lives Of Mormon Wives on Hulu.
