Judiciary urges Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to provide evidence for his claims
Mkhwanazi held an explosive media briefing on Sunday, 6 July, about police operations in KZN, where he also accused the minister of police, Senzo Mchunu, of political interference in police investigations.
Additionally, Mkhwanazi alleged that the political killings task team which Mchunu wanted to disband in December 2024 uncovered a syndicate including senior politicians, senior police officials, metro police, officials in correctional services, prosecutors, and other influential businesspeople that is controlled by a drug cartel in Gauteng.
The startling allegations have sent shockwaves across the country, with many political parties commending Mkhwanazi for his bravery and urging President Cyril Ramaphosa to suspend Mchunu.
On Thursday, 10 July, the Office of the Chief Justice said Mkhwanazi's claims made without substantiation are extremely damaging to public confidence in the independence and integrity of the courts – which is a fundamental pillar of constitutional democracy.
Chief Justice Mandisa Maya said the judiciary stands firm on its commitment to accountability and the rule of law.
'If any person including Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has credible evidence of unlawful and unethical conduct committed by a member of the judiciary, they are urged to report such matters to the legally mandated structures of the state.
'Unsubstantiated allegations, however, regrettably undermine the administration of justice and weaken public trust in our institutions which are essential to upholding our constitutional democracy,' Maya said.
Meanwhile, the Presidency has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Sunday, 13 July, address the nation on developments arising from Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's allegations against senior political and South African Police Service (SAPS) leadership.
'President Ramaphosa was attending a BRICS summit in Brazil on Sunday, 6 July 2025, when General Mkhwanazi outlined numerous allegations at a media briefing.
'The President undertook to attend to this development on his return from Brazil, given the implications for national security,' Ramaphosa's spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya said.

Border Management Authority to release its quarterly report and unveil new security measures
JOHANNESBURG - The Border Management Authority (BMA) is releasing its quarterly report and unveiling new security measures to be implemented at all ports of entry. BMA Commissioner, Michael Masiapato, is expected to unpack the authority's report for the first quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year at a press conference in Pretoria. As part of the briefing, Border Management Authority Commissioner Michael Masiapato will also announce new measures aimed at improving traveller verification systems and enhancing the efficiency of law enforcement operations across the country's borders. The BMA said it is advancing its operations with the introduction of new tools, in line with its ongoing commitment to strengthening the management of cross-border movement. Earlier this week, the authority addressed misinformation about a supposed new law regulating the entry or exit of South African citizens. It has urged the public to verify all travel and immigration-related information via official government channels, including the Department of Home Affairs and the BMA itself.

Justin Baldoni attends Blake Lively's deposition in legal dispute
Justin Baldoni stunned many by appearing in person at Blake Lively's deposition in New York, as their legal wrangle intensifies. Baldoni, aged 41, faced Blake Lively, 37, as his lawyers questioned her at her legal team's office. The courtroom drama has captivated not just Hollywood but the world. Conversations about workplace rights and legal protection have been resonating strongly. The legal battle centres on Lively's allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation against Baldoni. Justin Baldoni was her director and co-star in the film It Ends With Us . Baldoni has firmly denied the claims, according to People . Justin Baldoni's physical presence at the deposition defied many expectations. Traditionally, parties refrain from attending such depositions in person. Bryan Freedman, Justin Baldoni's lawyer, previously said, 'He wants to be vindicated, and that's all that he cares about.' 'Baldoni knows who he is, what he's done, what he hasn't done. He wants the truth to come out, and he's waiting for his day in court.' Judge Lewis J. Liman has strictly regulated the legal process by issuing a protective order. This allowed Lively's lawyers control over the location and notification of those present for the deposition. In a powerful statement after the dismissal of Baldoni's counterclaims, Blake Lively stated: 'Like so many others, I've felt the pain of a retaliatory lawsuit. This includes the manufactured shame that tries to break us. I am more resolved than ever to continue to stand for every woman's right to have a voice in protecting themselves, including their safety, their integrity, their dignity and their story.' Baldoni's countersuits include allegations of extortion and defamation against Blake Lively and her husband, actor Ryan Reynolds. A judge dismissed Justin Baldoni's defamation lawsuit against Blake Lively in June 2025. The court rejected his claims of extortion and defamation, ruling that Lively's actions constituted permissible negotiation rather than wrongful extortion. A judge has set the trial for March 2026, and both Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively will testify. Freedman summarised his approach: 'I'm going to ask her questions under penalty of perjury. She'll have to provide evidence and the truth. We're going to see how consistent her testimony is with the facts of what transpired.' The case remains a stark reminder of both the challenges faced by women in asserting their rights and the importance of due legal process. As anticipation builds for the trial, one reality remains clear: both sides are preparing for a battle where the truth and public vindication are at stake. Feet of an infant A three-month-old in Limpopo has been choked to death, allegedly by a relative. Image: File A 20-year old female has been arrested in Limpopo for allegedly murdering a three-month-old relative. The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Bandelierkop made the arrest after being called to the Vleifontein clinic at around 6:30pm on Friday, where they found the deceased male child, who had been brought there by two individuals that claim to have witnessed the murder. The two witnesses claim they were seated outside the house where the murder took place at around 6pm, in the company of the 20-year-old suspect and the child. They claim the suspect then took the three-month-old into the house and when they went to check up on her a while later, they found her in a seated position, choking the baby. The duo say they immediately intervened and rushed the child to the local clinic, but it was too late and he was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel. Local police immediately opened a case of murder, and the suspect was traced and apprehended. The SAPS says the motive for the murder remains unknown, and investigations continue.
