Beed sarpanch murder case: Court rejects Walmik Karad's discharge plea

The Hindu3 days ago
The Beed Court in Maharashtra rejected the discharge plea filed by Walmik Karad, the main accused in the chilling murder of a Beed sarpanch, Santosh Deshmukh, saying prima facie evidence reflects his involvement in the organised crime syndicate.
The Special Judge V.H. Patwadkar heard his plea on July 22 and in the detailed order released this week said, 'The statements of witnesses, electronic, digital, scientific, forensic, evidence etc. prima facie shows complicity of the applicant as it appears he have been member of the organized crime syndicate and was involved in continuing unlawful activities. Therefore, there are sufficient grounds to proceed against the applicant. Hence, the accused is not entitled to be discharged.'
Mr. Karad was booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) along with seven other accused in the murder case of Santosh Deshmukh on December 9, last year. Mr. Karad is known to be a close aide of former agriculture minister and Ajit-Pawar-led NCP leader Dhananjay Munde.
The prosecution in the court argued that accused Walmik Karad conspired with co-accused persons, demanding a ransom of ₹2 crores from the officials of the company Avaada Energy Private Ltd. 'Deceased Santosh Deshmukh tried to intervene and prevent the accused persons from closing the work of the company in the village Massajog in Beed. In order to teach a permanent lesson to deceased Santosh Deshmukh, the suspect, along with co-accused persons, allegedly hatched a conspiracy,' said the prosecution in the order.
The prosecution also cited that Mr. Karad acted as a director from behind the scenes and got the crime done through co-accused persons. 'Mr. Karad was all the while threatening co-accused persons as to why they failed to do the assigned work as conspired. Video recording, FSL report go to show the complicity of the Karad,' said Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, adding if his name is dropped, then this can pose a problem to law and order.
Whereas Karad filed the discharge plea, arguing he was framed falsely for political reasons and also mentioned that his role in the syndicated crime was not specified. He also alleged that the police did not reveal that among the 20 cases filed against him, in almost 15 cases, his name is clear, and the 'Bombay High Court also acquitted him in the appeal stage'.

'Rummy' video row: Never asked to resign by NCP leaders or CM Devendra Fadnavis, says Manikrao Kokate

Amid speculation on his continuation in the Maharashtra Cabinet, controversial Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate on Thursday (July 31, 2025) claimed he neither offered to resign nor was he asked to step down by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) or Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. A huge political firestorm erupted after videos purportedly showing Mr. Kokate playing a rummy game of cards in the State legislature went viral. The Opposition has been demanding Mr. Kokate's resignation over his repeated remarks that have triggered controversies in the last few months. The NCP leader has denied allegations of playing a game of cards. "I do not want to speak on this issue anymore. I will speak after the inquiry report (on the card game issue) is out," Mr. Kokate told a Marathi news channel in Pune. Mr. Kokate was reportedly ticked off by Ajit Pawar on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) during their meeting in Mantralaya. Manikrao Kokate denies playing rummy during Assembly, calls controversy politically motivated "I met Ajitdada on my own and clarified my stand. I had apologised to farmers recently during media interaction if their sentiments were hurt due to the card game controversy," he said. Responding to a specific query, Mr. Kokate said neither he offered to quit as a Minister nor was he asked to step down by any leader of the NCP, government or the Chief Minister. He recently ignited another row by terming the State Government a "beggar" while clarifying his previous controversial remarks directed at farmers on the ₹1 crop insurance. Maharashtra Agriculture Minister in row over video showing him playing rummy in Assembly "The Chief Minister had expressed his displeasure over the beggar's statement. I called him up and clarified my stand. I blame it on the lack of articulation," he added.

Vice President Election race: Poll schedule to be announced soon, preparation of Electoral College completed, says EC

The Election Commission of India said on Thursday, 31 July, that it will soon announce the schedule for the election to the vice president's office. The poll panel said it has finalised the Electoral College list for the Vice Presidential Election, 2025. As per Article 66(1) of the Constitution, the Vice President of India is elected by an Electoral College comprising the elected members of the Rajya Sabha, the nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, and the elected members of the Lok Sabha. The announcement comes after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as Vice President on 21 July, opening the contest for his successor. Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022, and his tenure was till 2027. Dhankhar's abrupt resignation followed a day of surprising developments in the Rajya Sabha for the government, as an opposition-sponsored notice for a motion to remove Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma was submitted to him and he mentioned it in the House. Accordingly, the poll panel said it has already started preparing for the Vice Presidential Elections in 2025 and that the election schedule will follow soon. 'The Electoral College list will be available for purchase at a counter set up in Election Commission of India from the date of notification, which is likely to be announced soon,' the poll panel said. According to Articles 63 to 71 of the Constitution and the Vice-President (Election) Rules, 1974, a formal election must be held within 60 days of Dhankhar's resignation and before 19 September 2025. The electorate or the electoral college comprises all members of both Houses of Parliament—elected and nominated—using a proportional representation system via a single transferable vote. The MPs will cast a single transferable vote with a secret ballot. The electoral college currently has 788 MPs,588 in Lok Sabha and 245 in Rajya Sabha. The Electoral College list will be available for purchase at a counter set up in Election Commission of India from the date of notification. The Election Commission will announce the date of polls. The ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance(NDA) has a majority in the electorate, which includes the members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Therefore, the probable names will likely be considered in the coming days.

Emergency-like situation prevailing in Andhra under Naidus govt: Jagan

Nellore (Andhra Pradesh), Jul 31 (PTI) YSRCP supremo YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday alleged that an 'emergency-like" situation is prevailing in Andhra Pradesh under the N Chandrababu Naidu-led government. Addressing a press conference, he said that the situation is evident by the incidents occurring across the state, citing the cases of multiple arrests of YSRCP leaders. 'Emergency-like circumstances are prevailing in Andhra Pradesh today and several incidents that are happening in the state will show it to your eyes," the former CM said, after visiting the home and family members of senior party leader N Prasanna Kumar Reddy. Prasanna's home was recently ransacked allegedly by the ruling party cadres after the YSRCP leader's alleged remarks against a woman TDP MLA. Stating that many restrictions were clamped down as part of his visit to Nellore, the YSRCP supremo questioned Naidu whether it is a crime to meet his own party leaders. The opposition leader alleged that the CM was 'scared" of him and several roads leading to his programme were 'dug" to prevent people from turning up. The government deployed more than 2,000 policemen, the Deputy-Inspector General (DIG) of police and a large number of DSPs. This force is not meant for his security, but to stop people…, he claimed. On the recent attack on Prasanna's residence allegedly by TDP cadres, he claimed that the former would have been killed had he been at home at that time. Further, the opposition leader noted that the government has booked and jailed senior party leader and former minister K Govardhan Reddy in 14 cases to deny him bail and extend his prison time. When there was a chance for Govardhan to get bail in one case, the government was raking up another case, he alleged. The YSRCP chief said Govardhan was booked for forwarding information about his press conferences on WhatsApp, 'illegal" quartz mining, supporting construction workers protesting lack of sand and other 'silly" reasons. Despite the prime accused persons getting bail in the mining case, Govardhan, who is A4 in this case, is yet to get bail, he added. Reading out a large list of YSRCP leaders who have been booked, arrested and allegedly harassed, the opposition leader warned Naidu that he is sowing the seeds of a bad tradition which could boomerang after the TDP-led coalition government loses power. Referring to the NDA government's poll promises, the YSRCP chief said that it cheated people without implementing them and accused it of 'destroying schools, removing English medium instruction and TOEFL courses". The unpaid dues under Aarogyasri (free healthcare) have piled up to Rs 4,000 crore and farmers are not receiving remunerative prices, he alleged. Though the government promised free sand, no such facility is available, he said, and accused the NDA government of 'widespread corruption". The Andhra Pradesh government is running a 'liquor mafia" in the state where permit rooms charge more than the maximum retail price and officers in police department are acting as 'collection agents" to pass on kickbacks to local MLAs and also up to Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh, he claimed. Further, he alleged that illegal poker clubs are bribing authorities with some of them in West Godavari district reportedly paying up to Rs 1 crore. Assailing the TDP-led coalition government for allegedly offering land to non-descript companies at a pittance, Reddy alleged that land is being given away as cheap as Rs 99 paise per acre to entities they like. Reddy reminded Naidu that his government will not last forever and exuded confidence that the YSRCP will return to power after about three years. Further, he issued a stern warning to police officials that whoever is toeing the government line to harass YSRCP leaders will definitely be held accountable even if they retire, take VRS or go overseas. Reddy warned the officials that he will call everyone and bring them to justice. There was no immediate reaction from the TDP. The YSCRP chief arrived in Nellore as part of his visit to call on the jailed party leader and others. He reached Nellore in a chopper and proceeded to the local district jail to meet Govardhan Reddy. top videos View all The former chief minister went to prison around 11 am, according to a video link shared by YSRCP. Later, he interacted with Govardhan Reddy's family members and followed it up with a visit to Prasanna' house.
