Jacob Wheeler Notches Ninth MLF Bass Pro Tour Win at Lowrance Stage 5 at Kentucky Lake Presented by Mercury
At Lowrance Stage 5 Presented by Mercury on Kentucky Lake, Wheeler made sure no one else even got a chance to steal the trophy.
Wheeler rallied after a slow morning and stacked up 110 pounds, 13 ounces on 46 scorable bass during Sunday's Championship Round. He turned what looked like it would be another slugfest with Lawrence, the home-lake favorite, into a rout, topping Lawrence by 32-7.
The win is Wheeler's first of 2025 and ninth overall on the Bass Pro Tour, adding to his tour-best trophy count.
This one carried special significance, not just because he was able to flip the script and get revenge on Lawrence, but because he grew up traveling to Kentucky Lake to compete in tournaments alongside his father, Curtis, who passed away from cancer in April.
'I just felt like he was with me all week,' Wheeler said through tears shortly after the victory became official. 'It's the first tournament that I've fished on a lake that we fished together, and this one had a lot of meaning to it. Obviously, he was a big part of my life, and I wouldn't be here without him. I just wanted to win it for him.'

Not only did Wheeler take home the trophy and $150,000 top prize at Stage 5, he put himself in an excellent position to win another title (and $100,000 paycheck).
Wheeler now has a 38-point lead in the Fishing Clash Angler of the Year race over Lawrence, who moved up from fourth to second. As long as Wheeler makes the Knockout Round at each of the final two events of the regular season, he's virtually assured of his fourth AOY crown in the past five years.
At this point, the better question might not be whether Wheeler will win Angler of the Year but whether he can break his own Bass Pro Tour record. Through five events, he's averaging a finish of 3.2. That's well ahead of the mark he set when he won his second points title in 2022 (5.4) for the best average finish in the seven-year history of the Bass Pro Tour.
Given all he's achieved over the past seven years, it's natural to wonder whether the wins still mean as much. Wheeler's reaction after lines out erased any doubt that this victory is special.
For one thing, he completed the unofficial Tennessee River Grand Slam – he's now won on Chickamauga, Guntersville, Pickwick and Kentucky. And Kentucky Lake has a particularly special place in Wheeler's heart. Growing up in Indianapolis, it was the closest venue that regularly hosted national-level events, and Wheeler's father drove him to the fishery to compete throughout his teenage years.
As focused as he was on earning the win, every time he came across a familiar landmark, Wheeler couldn't help but think back to those times in the boat with his dad.
'I stopped at a point that my dad caught a 6 1/2-pounder on in March in a club tournament in practice just to reminisce,' he said. 'Stuff like that, as you're running down the lake, it just brings back insane memories at such a young age. That's what made it even so much sweeter.'

Texans rebuild entire roster in new building-from-scratch NFL player draft
What would happen if the Houston Texans were forced to rebuild their roster? Better yet, what if NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told every team that much like in Madden, a fantasy draft was the new norm for the 2025? How many Texans would show up with the AFC South champions? How many would join rivals like Indianapolis, Jacksonville and Tennessee? Which players from Houston would be considered first-round talents? Chad Reuter put together a hypothetical seven-round draft where teams would build their team from scratch and the order would be the order of the 2025 NFL draft, but then reversed order every round. So the Texans might select at No. 25 for Round 1, but they'd be at Pick No. 40 in Round 2. So, how did the Texans fare? Let's just say DeMeco Ryans should be ecstatic about the selections to build a foundation around his defese for the long haul. NFL building-from-scratch player draft: Houston Texans Analysis From a defensive standpoint, this group would be an excellent start to contend from the jump, plus Houston would get a few No. 1 options at critical positions on the offensive line and wide receiver position. However, the Texans ignored a pair of premium positions at tackle and tight end. In Round 1, C.J. Stroud was off within the first 20 picks, but Derek Stingley and Will Anderson were still in on the board. Without the right option at QB, Houston lands perhaps the league's best defensive tackle in Jones, who's posted back-to-back double-digit sack seasons in 2022 and 2023. While Stingley was still on the board at No. 40, passing on the league's consensus top corner in Surtain would be foolish. Yes, Stingley has been one of the league's elite defensive backs over the past two seasons, but the All-Pro defender from Denver just won Defensive Player of the Year after being targeted on just 10.9% of his coverage snaps this season -- the lowest rate among 83 cornerbacks with 300 or more coverage snaps. In Round 3, Danielle Hunter was selected within the first five picks, taking him out of the conversation before any deal could be struck. The same goes for former Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil (No. 71), Anderson (No. 73) and Nico Collins (No. 76). Outside of receiver Drake London and offensive tackle Jake Matthews, Humphrey, who likely is now the league's top center following Frank Ragnow's retirement, makes the most sense. In Round 4, pickings are slim at quarterback. Tyler Shough was the only other quarterback left on the board. So Richardson, who still has upside and a runner, might fit in Nick Caley's offense just fine. In Round 5, Houston secures a former Pro Bowler off the edge in Lawrence, though Rashan Gary might have more upside because of his age. Last season with the Cowboys, Lawrence only played in four games, so perhaps a change of scenery could do wonders for his career. In Round 6, Winfield is a great addition on the back end who will fit Ryans' S.W.A.R.M. mentality with a hard-hitting demeanor. In Round 7, the Texans finally land a receiver with Aiyuk, who, despite coming off a torn ACL, likely was the best option among pass-catchers.

NFL insider: New York Giants can't keep wasting Dexter Lawrence's career
New York Giants star defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence has been a model of consistency over the last several seasons. He has played at an elite level and is clearly in the prime of his career ahead of the Giants' 2025 season. While some expect the Giants' defense to be something special centered around Lawrence and the upgraded defensive line, there isn't really a ton of optimism around the team being a contender in the NFC East in 2025. That sparks the fear of Big Blue wasting Lawrence's prime and career, as outlined by Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. Lawrence, 27, quietly went about his business during OTAs and spring minicamp, working in individual drills but watching 11-on-11s from the sideline. He hasn't given a media interview since Thanksgiving — in the aftermath of suffering a dislocated elbow — so his thoughts are unknown on the roster overhaul that happened in the offseason and the plan to rebuild around quarterback Jaxson Dart in 2026, when Lawrence will be in his eighth season. But, as the 2025 season approaches, the Giants are running the risk of wasting greatness. Although Lawrence seems to be dominating at a higher level every year for the last three years, realistically, there are only so many years left of him playing at a level this high. He is arguably the best interior defensive lineman in the NFL, with the ability to not only be a run stopper but a pass rusher as well. The problem is a high snap count and the tax on Lawrence's body. Lawrence has the Giants' logo tattooed on his right biceps. He told The Post last season that he sees himself sharing space with legends in the franchise's Ring of Honor one day. 'I do see myself having my name up there,' Lawrence said at a time when he was 'extremely frustrated' with losing and teammates repeating mental mistakes. 'That means more to me than getting traded. In this organization, anybody would want to have their name up there.' But it also stands to reason that Lawrence hears a ticking clock — a sound getting louder over the past 700-plus days — on his desire to win now. It's up to the 2025 Giants not to quietly waste another day of Lawrence's dominance toiling in obscurity. If the Giants are going to benefit from Lawrence playing at a high level, they will need to turn their fortunes in a hurry. After a great first year under head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, the Giants have gone downhill over the last two seasons. Lawrence has an opportunity to have his strongest year yet if he continues to play the way he's been playing, considering the talent around him this upcoming season. Obviously, the Giants would rather be a competitor while one of their best players is in their prime. However, the time is ticking away for the Giants to turn it around. This season is already looking pretty grim when factoring in the Giants' offensive expectations and the schedule that lies ahead of them.
