NATO's Rutte to meet with Trump in Washington next week

Reuters11 hours ago
BRUSSELS, July 13 (Reuters) - NATO Chief Mark Rutte will visit Washington D.C. on Monday July 14 and Tuesday July 15 where he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, NATO said in a press release.
The press release did not give an immediate reason for Rutte's visit but Trump said in a recent interview with NBC News that the U.S. would be willing to supply weapons to Ukraine via NATO and that he would make a "major statement" on Monday.
The Trump administration has so far only sent weapons authorised by former President Joe Biden, who was a staunch supporter of Kyiv.

King Charles to host Donald Trump and his wife Melania for state visit in September, Buckingham Palace confirms

Donald Trump will be hosted by the King at Windsor Castle during his second state visit to the UK – but will miss out on addressing MPs. The President will be accompanied by his wife, First Lady Melania, on his trip from September 17 to 19, Buckingham Palace said. He was previously feted by a state visit in 2019. The House of Commons will not be sitting at the time because it will be in recess for the party conference season, meaning he will not be able to address Parliament as French president Emmanuel Macron did during his visit last week. However, the House of Lords will be sitting. In February, during a meeting at the White House, Sir Keir Starmer presented Mr Trump with a 'historic and unprecedented' personal invitation from the King inviting him for a second state visit. In the letter, Charles suggested he and the President might meet at Balmoral or Dumfries House in Scotland before the grander state visit began. However, it is understood that there were logistical challenges surrounding an informal visit, with complexities in both the King and Mr Trump's diaries meaning a private meeting was not possible over the summer months. It emerged last week that Police Scotland has been in the early stages of planning for the visit, which is likely to see the President travel to either of his golf clubs in Aberdeenshire or Ayrshire – an event which will require substantial policing resources. The September event comes after Charles visited Canada in May where he opened the nation's parliament. Many Canadians saw the King's two-day visit to Ottawa as a symbol of support for the country that has faced the unwanted attention of Mr Trump's trade war and threats to annex it. Last week, Mr Macron and his wife Brigitte were hosted by the King and Queen during his three-day visit. Mr Macron's itinerary included a glittering banquet at Windsor Castle, a carriage ride through the historic Berkshire town and a ceremonial welcome. Trump to be hosted by King at Windsor during unprecedented second state visit

Donald Trump will be hosted by the King and Queen at Windsor Castle during his unprecedented second state visit to the UK in September. The US president will be accompanied by his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, on his state visit to the UK from September 17 to 19, Buckingham Palace said. This will be Mr Trump's second state visit to the UK – an unprecedented gesture towards an American leader, having previously been feted by a state visit in 2019. The House of Commons will not be sitting at the time of Mr Trump's visit as it will be in recess for party conference season, meaning the president will not be able to address Parliament as French President Emmanuel Macron did during his state visit this week. However, the House of Lords will be sitting. In February this year, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer presented the US president with a letter from the King as he invited him for the visit during a meeting at the White House. As the pair were sat next to each other in the Oval Office, Sir Keir handed the president the personal invitation, later saying 'this is truly historic and unprecedented'. After reading it, Mr Trump said it was a 'great, great honour', adding 'and that says at Windsor – that's really something'. In the letter, Charles suggested he and the president might meet at Balmoral or Dumfries House in Scotland first before the much grander state visit. However, it is understood that, although all options were explored, there were logistical challenges surrounding an informal visit, with complexities in both the King and Mr Trump's diaries meaning a private meeting was not possible over the course of the summer months. This week, a senior Police Scotland officer said the cost of policing a visit by Mr Trump will be 'considerable' and that the force will look to secure extra funding. It emerged on Wednesday that the force was in the early stages of planning for a visit at the end of this month, which is likely to see the president visit one or both of his golf clubs in Aberdeenshire and Ayrshire and require substantial policing resources and probably units to be called in from elsewhere in the UK. Precedent for second-term US presidents who have already made a state visit is usually tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle, as was the case for George W Bush and Barack Obama. The late Queen hosted Mr Trump during his first state visit. News of the plans for the September visit comes days after the King wrote to Mr Trump to express his 'profound sadness' after catastrophic flooding killed nearly 90 people in Texas. Charles 'offered his deepest sympathy' to those who lost loved ones over the July Fourth weekend, the British Embassy in Washington said. Back in March, Mr Trump sent the King his 'best wishes' and 'good health' in a phone call with Sir Keir after Charles spent a brief period in hospital after experiencing temporary side effects from his cancer treatment. The September state visit comes after Charles visited Canada back in May where he opened the nation's parliament. Many Canadians saw the King's two-day visit to Ottawa as a symbol of support for the country that has faced the unwanted attention of Mr Trump's trade war against his neighbour and threats to annex Canada. King Charles to host Trump in September for state visit to Britain, palace says

MANCHESTER, England, July 14 (Reuters) - Britain's King Charles will host U.S. President Donald Trump in September for his unprecedented second state visit to Britain, Buckingham Palace said on Monday. The visit will take place from September 17 to 19. "His Majesty the King will host the President and Mrs Trump at Windsor Castle," the palace said in a statement, adding that further details would be announced in due course. Trump said last month he had agreed to meet Charles after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer handed him a handwritten letter from the monarch in the Oval Office. The U.S. president will be the first elected political leader in modern times to be hosted for two state visits by a British monarch. The late Queen Elizabeth welcomed Trump to Buckingham Palace for a three-day state visit in June 2019 during his first term in office, during which he had a private lunch with the sovereign and had tea with Charles, who was then heir. Starmer and Trump are also due to meet in Scotland later this month, a source told Reuters last week, with details including the specific date yet to be finalised. The two leaders have developed a warm relationship in recent months, and last month signed a framework trade deal on the sidelines of a G7 meeting that formally lowered some U.S. tariffs on imports from Britain. In May, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticised Britain's invitation to Trump for a state visit, saying it undermined his government's effort to project a united front against the U.S. president's talk of annexing Canada. Trump's past visits to Britain have attracted large protests, with his 2018 trip costing police more than 14 million pounds ($18.88 million) as 10,000 officers were deployed from all over Britain. Most Britons have an unfavourable view of the president, according to opinion, opens new tab polls, opens new tab. State visits are usually pomp-laden affairs featuring an open-top carriage trip through central London and a banquet at Buckingham Palace. ($1 = 0.7415 pounds)
