India's young chess star Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has defended former world champion Magnus Carlsen's viral table-slamming reaction during the Norway Chess 2025 tournament. The dramatic moment happened after Dommaraju Gukesh defeated the current World No. 1 for the first time in classical chess.
The match between Gukesh and Carlsen was a big highlight of Round 6 at Norway Chess. In their first meeting earlier in the tournament, Carlsen had defeated Gukesh. But this time, it was the current world champion who turned things around. Although Carlsen was in a better position, he made a big mistake towards the end that allowed Gukesh to grab victory.

After losing the clash, Carlsen slammed the table in frustration. The clip went viral on social media and sparked many memes. Some fans even criticised the reaction, calling it unsportsmanlike. Praggnanandhaa, who is now India's new No. 1 player, defended Carlsen's reaction.

During an interview with PTI, Praggnanandhaa said that Carlsen's reaction was instinctive and happens to every player. Pragg added that even he and Gukesh have sometimes shown similar outbursts after losing a game.
'Yes, it was an instinctive reaction. I think it does happen to players. I've done it sometimes, but rarely. I mean, it's (me hitting the table) not as powerful as Magnus because he's a strong guy, but Gukesh has done it and many others. It's just an instinctive reaction because you're so focused that it just comes out," Pragg said.
On the work front, Praggnanandhaa recently won his third title of the year at the UzChess Cup Masters 2025 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This after he won the Tata Steel Chess tournament in Netherlands in February as well as Superbet Chess Classic Romania last month.
Praggnanandhaa has joined Team Liquid ahead of the Esports World Cup 2025. His team includes some big names, including Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. Praggnanandhaa will play the Last Chance Qualifiers to try and qualify for the EWC, which is slated to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 7 July to 24 August.

"Don't Pay Much Attention...": R Praggnanandhaa On Becoming India's No 1 Chess Player

Indian chess grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has become the country's highest-ranked player after winning the UzChess Cup Masters in Croatia. However, the 19-year-old said he is not overly focused on the rating points and prefers to take one tournament at a time. Praggnanandhaa defeated home favourite Nodirbek Abdusattorov with Black pieces on the final day of the tournament. With this win, his live rating rose to 2778.3, pushing him ahead of the reigning world champion D Gukesh (2776.6) and Arjun Erigaisi (2775.7). Before this, Erigaisi had been the top-ranked Indian but dropped to sixth place after drawing his game with fellow Indian Aravindh Chithambaram. In the world rankings, Praggnanandhaa now holds the fourth spot. He is just behind Magnus Carlsen (2839.2), Hikaru Nakamura (2807.0), and Fabiano Caruana (2784.2), and ahead of Gukesh, who is ranked fifth. Speaking to ANI about becoming India's top-ranked player, Praggnanandhaa said, "I became India's number one because of one point. So I don't think it really matters. These one or two points can go either way in one game. I don't think I'll pay attention to that so much. For me, more than that, the tournament that I just won was much more special. I mean, like for me, I take a tournament at a time. I don't pay too much attention to the like these one or two rating points that change." Praggnanandhaa also received praise from World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and World No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura after being picked by Team Liquid for the upcoming Esports World Cup 2025 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Reacting to their compliments, he said, "It feels good, but I don't think it will impact me in any way. I'll try to do what I'm doing, but yeah, it's good to see such comments. It inspires me to do better and gives me confidence." He also acknowledged the support he has received from Adani Sportsline, a partnership that has helped him grow over the past year. "I've been supported by Adani group from last one year. As chess players, we need to travel a lot and also train a lot, and these things can be pretty expensive because I trained for the Candidates last year. We needed to have a team and then have in-person camps. That's where Adani Group's support was invaluable. They were supporting me even when I was not playing well. They were there supporting me through my loss. Such support makes you push yourself harder. I'm genuinely grateful to Adani Group for their support. It's great to see such corporations coming into the game. It's overall a good thing for the game," he concluded. Kishore Jena pulls out of Neeraj Chopra Classic due to injury, Yashvir to replace him

Struggling with an ankle injury, Kishore Jena has pulled out of Saturday's Neeraj Chopra Classic international javelin event and will be replaced by Yashvir Singh, the organisers announced on Monday. Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena (PTI) The 23-year-old Yashvir had finished second in the Federation Cup in April and fifth in the Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea in May with a personal best of 82.57m. "Kishore Jena has been ruled out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 due to an ankle injury. Yashvir Singh has been named as his replacement in the final lineup," the organisers of NC Classic said in an official update. On June 6, Poland's Martin Konecny had replaced Asian Games bronze medallist Genki Dean of Japan as the organisers confirmed the 12-man entry list for the rescheduled event. India's first-ever international javelin competition, originally slated for May 24, was postponed due to military tensions between India and Pakistan. Organised by double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra in collaboration with JSW Sports and sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the event will feature a world-class field comprising seven top international throwers and five Indian athletes, including Chopra himself. Apart from Konecny, the confirmed international lineup includes two-time world champion Anderson Peters (Grenada), 2016 Olympic gold medallist Thomas Röhler (Germany), 2015 world champion Julius Yego (Kenya), Curtis Thompson (USA), Luiz Mauricio da Silva (Brazil), and Rumesh Pathirage (Sri Lanka). The Indian contingent will feature Asian Championships silver medallist Sachin Yadav, Rohit Yadav, and Sahil Silwal. Initially set to be held in Panchkula, the event has been relocated to the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru due to lighting limitations at the original venue that affected live telecast capabilities. The event, granted Category A status by World Athletics, is considered a "dream project" of Chopra and aims to establish India as a credible host of elite-level athletics events. It had to be postponed following the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including several tourists. According to the organisers, ticket prices will range from ₹ 199 to ₹ 9,999. Premium experiences include five corporate boxes, each accommodating 15 guests, priced at ₹ 44,999. A special stand next to the thrower's runway is available for ₹ 9,999, while another premium section in the North Upper Stand, just behind the runway, is priced at ₹ 2,999.

Troubled By 'Filthy' Habits, Indian Team Resorts To 'Two-Coloured' Method Ahead Of 2nd Test

The Indian pace attack, practising with two-coloured balls to shed the "filthy" habits of white-ball cricket, drew plenty of attention at the penultimate net session ahead of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Jasprit Bumrah was seen holding a red and white ball at the start of the session and so were the other members of the Indian pace battery. It is common practice to use multi coloured balls and to be specific, the Indian pacers have been using them since the start of the English summer. One reason for it is that the fast bowlers arrived in England after a lengthy white-ball stint, including the Champions Trophy and the subsequent Indian Premier League. India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said training with the two-coloured balls helps in eliminating white ball tendencies from the red ball game. "It's not a new thing. All the ball manufacturers make those balls. We talk about detoxing the bowlers, just getting the very basics right. And that's the easiest way to give you an indication. Guys have come out of a long IPL season and the filthy habits of that cricket. "We don't want that creeping into Test cricket. So Morne (Morkel) and the bowlers just use that tool just to make sure the basic fundamentals are in place. We've been using it for the last two weeks," said Doeschate. Home hero Moeen Ali checks in at England training Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali made a surprise visit to the host's net session at his home ground here on Monday. England are banking on Ali's knowledge of Edgbaston where the pitch is expected to be full of runs and aid spinners day three onwards. Head coach Brendon McCullum and spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel were seen having a long conversation with Ali. Sources told PTI that Ali was at the venue only for the day and is not getting into a long term coaching role with the team. Having retired from the highest level, Ali plies his trade in T20 leagues around the world and was also part of IPL 2025. England captain Ben Stokes had forced Ali to reverse his Test retirement for an Ashes comeback couple of years ago. On Monday, he was there was for his former captain once again.
