Report – Cristian Chivu Stamps His Authority At Inter Milan
Coach Cristian Chivu is reportedly already stamping his authority as a dressing room leader at Inter Milan. This according to today's print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInter1908. Cristian Chivu has now been coach of Inter for almost two weeks. The Romanian replaced Simone Inzaghi at the helm at the start of June. It hasn't exactly all been smooth sailing for Chivu at Inter. The circumstances of Inzaghi's exit created a difficult atmosphere. Furthermore, the early exit from the Club World Cup also created waves behind the scenes. (Photo by) According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, the simmering feud between Hakan Calhanoglu and Lautaro Martinez was the biggest challenge for Chivu so far at Inter. However, the 44-year-old gave a clear sign of how he's going to lead Inter with his handling of that situation. The Nerazzurri coach showed his authority by bringing the team together in a meeting to clear the air. Chivu made it clear that neither Martinez, Calhanoglu, nor anyone else will challenge his leadership behind the scenes. Therefore, the Gazzetta report, Chivu is showing why Inter have put their faith in him. The Nerazzurri board knows Chivu well from his time in charge of the youth teams. And they are backing him.

Hamburg drop pursuit of Southampton's Armel Bella-Kotchap
The Hamburger Morgenpost reports that Southampton defender Armel Bella-Kotchap's transfer to Hamburg has fallen through. The newly-promoted Bundesliga outfit does not wish to meet Southampton's demand for a €10m transfer fee. Attempts to work out a loan deal with the EFL Championship club also proved unsuccessful. Bella-Kotchap's stated desire to return to the Bundesliga may yet yield something. Borussia Mönchengladbach were also rumored to be interested in the twice-capped German international. A move to Hamburg would have nevertheless made much more sense for Bella-Kotchap. The 23-year-old could have received the chance to accrue regular playing time in Merlin Polzin's squad, not to mention potentially form an intriguing central defensive partnership with another German centre-back returning from a long stint abroad, Jordan Torunarigha. The Morgenpost article notes that Hamburg shall intensify their search for another central defender over the weekend, ideally having a new introduction to present early next week. Interestingly enough, HSV have also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Luka Vuskovic. Luka's elder brother Mario represented Hamburg in the 2. Bundesliga prior to becoming embroiled in his famous doping incident. A loan deal for the 18-year-old Luka, per the paper, has been officially ruled out. GGFN |

Joe Root becomes the 3rd highest scorer in test cricket as England takes control against India
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Joe Root became the third highest run scorer in test cricket on Friday as he helped England reach 332-2, only 26 runs behind India. Root was 63 not out at lunch on day 3 of the fourth test at Old Trafford, with Ollie Pope 70 not out. The 34-year-old Root overtook India's Rahul Dravid and South Africa's Jacques Kallis in overall runs scored. Root's current total is 13,322, needing 57 more runs to overtake Australia's Ricky Ponting (13,378) but still far behind first-placed Sachin Tendulkar (15,921). Of more importance for England was a commanding opening session in Manchester with the host heading for a substantial first-innings lead and hoping to clinch the five-match series, which it currently leads 2-1. Resuming on 225-2 and replying to India's first innings of 358, Root and Pope were both on half centuries as the visitors struggled to have any impact with the ball. But Root's day could have ended early when he survived nearly being run out on 22 following a miscommunication with Pope that left him way out of position when Ravindra Jadeja tried to capitalize. Before that Root narrowly avoided being out leg before wicket. England scored 107 off 28 overs in the morning session. England carried on its impressive batting from day 2 when it took control of the match with a blistering opening partnership of 166 by Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP cricket:
