Over 4.4 tonnes of invasive fish removed from Malaysian waters since 2022
PEKAN: The Fisheries Department has removed over 4.4 tonnes of non-native fish species from Malaysian waters since 2022 through 17 operations targeting invasive fish.
Its director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain said the operations were aimed at eliminating aggressive, fast-breeding foreign species that threaten local biodiversity.
He said Malaysia is home to more than 449 native freshwater fish species, including the kelah, temoleh, sebarau and river catfish, which are ecologically and economically important.
"However, invasive species such as peacock bass, African catfish, redtail catfish and the Amazon sailfin catfish or 'bandaraya fish', are now threatening the sustainability of our aquatic biodiversity," he told reporters after officiating the Invasive Fish Species Awareness programme and the "Moh! Tangkap Baung Ekor Merah" (Catch the Redtail Catfish) competition here on Saturday (May 31).
Based on recent reports, the redtail catfish population is notably high in Sungai Pahang and is also present in Sungai Perak and Sungai Selangor, indicating the species' ability to adapt easily to local aquatic environments.
He did not rule out the possibility that these invasive fish were initially brought in by aquaculture operators from neighbouring countries and later escaped into natural waterways.
Despite the ecological threat, Adnan said that the redtail catfish has commercial value due to its market price, which has encouraged some communities to catch and sell the fish.
"However, this should not lead to complacency. We need coordinated efforts to reduce the population of these invasive species, including raising public awareness about their threat to local ecosystems," he said.
Among the initiatives taken is the organisation of invasive fish-catching competitions aimed at removing these species from national waters to reduce their population and ecological impact.
During the event, the department also presented RM331,400 in Matching Grant Assistance under the Aquaculture Integration Development Programme to three main participants of the Rizqi Cluster, as well as RM66,000 in living allowance aid to 22 fishermen in the district. – Bernama

He said this when officiating the launch of the 2025 LTAT Foundation Education Initiatives at a leading hotel here today. Mohamed Khaled said the second initiative is the 'Sentuhan Elit SPM' Programme, which involves 658 selected students from six schools in camps (SDK). "They will participate in programmes such as intensive SPM tuition, exam answering technique workshops as well as career and post-SPM directions,' he said. He added that the third initiative is the "Kemahiran Keluarga Tentera (K2T)' programme, which expands access to tertiary-level education and skills training for MAF personnel, including Armed Forces Family Welfare Body (BAKAT) members and their children. "They can attend 22 short courses, such as culinary and makeup. Those who further their studies at MARA educational institutions in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) or its equivalent will receive sponsorship covering fees not exceeding RM3,000 per person.

Recently Unearthed Kota Melaka Alignment Will Be Preserved
MELAKA, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Melaka Museum Corporation (PERZIM) has assured that the area where a historic structure was discovered, and believed to be part of the old Melaka Fort bastion situated in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) heritage site zone, will be preserved. Its general manager, Erne Hamsah, gave this assurance following the construction of a car park in front of Muzium Istana Melaka in Bandar Hilir, which was previously categorised as Taman Larangan (Forbidden Park). "Conservation work has already started with the appointment of conservators and archaeologists to carry out studies at the excavation site, while the parking lot construction, supervised by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB), is being reorganised following the discovery of the historic structure. "We will indeed preserve (the site) because among the structures identified is the old bastion that is important in the history of Melaka's defence. "We are also reviewing how the monument can be revealed to visitors without affecting the stability of the structure, seeing that there are many factors that need to be taken into account, including the environmental elements such as erosion and physical damage,' she said. She told reporters this after the "Warisan Santai' Programme of the 17th Melaka World Heritage City anniversary celebration in conjunction with the Duyong state constituency's 'Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat' (WRUR) programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Duyong, Hang Tuah Village here today, which was officiated by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. Bali ferry tragedy: Wisma Putra confirms M'sian's death, says all consular processes concluded
KUALA LUMPURWisma Putra has confirmed the death of Malaysian citizen Fauzey Awang in the tragic sinking of the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya passenger ferry in the Bali Strait on July 4. In its final media advisory on the incident, the Foreign Ministry also said that all consular processes have now concluded. "This follows the completion of arrangements on the ground and in accordance with the family's request for privacy and dignity during this difficult time," Wisma Putra said in the statement Tuesday (July 15). According to Wisma Putra, the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta had been working closely with Indonesian authorities and the ninistry's own Consular Department from the outset of the incident. "Their assistance ensured the family of the deceased received comprehensive support throughout the identification and repatriation process," it said. Wisma Putra said that on July 11, the deceased's next-of-kin arrived in Surabaya, Indonesia, and subsequently travelled to Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah (RSUD) Blambangan in Banyuwangi, East Java, where the remains of the late Fauzey were being held. "With the cooperation of the East Java Police and relevant local agencies, the family was assisted in all logistical matters including documentation, transportation, and burial rites. "The burial was completed the same evening, in accordance with the deceased's final wishes". Wisma Putra extended its sincere gratitude to the Indonesian government for the exceptional support extended throughout the search, identification, and final arrangements. The Ministry specifically acknowledged the efforts of the East Java Police, search and rescue teams, hospital officials, and local authorities for their professionalism and compassion. The Malaysian embassy in Jakarta remains in contact with the deceased's family and stands ready to assist with any remaining consular needs.
