TO spark a love for reading, a book kiosk has been set up at SK Bandar Rinching in Semenyih, Selangor.
The RM75,000 facility was gifted by Eco World Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of Eco World Development Group Bhd (EcoWorld).
Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said he had witnessed first-hand the teachers and students' enthusiasm for the facility.
Calling it encouraging, Lee expressed certainty that the kiosk would grow into a vibrant hub of learning, curiosity and inspiration.
'We want to make books easily accessible and ensure that reading becomes an enjoyable part of daily life.
'At Eco World Foundation, we believe education is the cornerstone of a better future and every child should have access to tools that help them thrive.
'Reading is one of the most powerful ways to unlock knowledge and opportunity.
'This kiosk is more than just a corporate social responsibility project as it reflects our deep commitment to educational empowerment,' he said at the kiosk handover to SK Bandar Riching headmaster Azril Sham Mohamed.
Also present were EcoWorld president and chief executive officer Datuk Chang Khim Wah and divisional general manager Evon Yap.
The kiosk, funded by Eco Majestic township in Semenyih, is expected to benefit the school's 2,700 pupils.
Construction began in February and was completed by mid-March.
The kiosk will offer pupils, teachers, parents and the wider school community access to diverse reading materials.
To ensure everyone has a chance to enjoy the facility, the kiosk will operate twice a month.
This initiative builds on Eco World Foundation's past support for SK Bandar Rinching.
In December 2023, it donated 150 sets of desks and chairs worth RM25,000, while its Students Aid Programme (SAP) supports 27 underprivileged pupils at the school.
On a broader note, SAP supports some 2,000 students annually at 117 schools nationwide, with essentials including school supplies, uniforms and financial assistance.
To date, 106 students under the SAP have continued on to tertiary education.
Eco World Foundation on a whole undertakes humanitarian projects to mitigate social shortcomings in education and literacy, health and well-being, poverty and lack of community infrastructure throughout the country.

Man loses over RM300,000 to online investment scam

ALOR STAR: A company director lost more than RM300,000 after falling victim to an investment scam promoted through an online advertisement in mid-May. Kedah Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief, Superintendent Loi Yew Lik said the 44-year-old man lodged a police report at 1.04pm Monday after realising he was a victim of an investment scam. "On May 11, the complainant had come across a Facebook advertisement offering an investment opportunity and later contacted several individuals via WhatsApp. "The suspects promised daily returns of 10 per cent, and from May 14 to June 17, the victim transferred a total of RM302,100," he said in a statement today. According to Loi, the complainant made 18 transactions to three different accounts but became suspicious and realised he had been scammed when the suspects requested additional funds for him to withdraw both the promised returns and his capital. "The public is advised to verify with the police before making any suspicious transactions. Checks can also be done via the Semak Mule application, the JSJK PDRM Facebook page, or by contacting the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997," he said. - BERNAMA

Sabah expands support for fishermen, including in Semporna

Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government continues to boost the livelihoods of local fishermen through various assistance programs, regardless of their registration with local Area Fishermen Associations (PNK), said Assistant Minister II Datuk Peto Galim. He said initiatives under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry include equipment aid like boats, engines, nets, GPS units, and life jackets, especially for poor and hardcore poor fishermen. As of 2024, Sabah has 26,682 fishermen, with 5,158 in Semporna. Six Semporna fishermen received direct aid this year, with another 12 expected to benefit soon. Through Ko-Nelayan, the ministry also offers microcredit via i-Nelayan (up to RM10,000 for fishing gear) and i-Hiliran (up to RM100,000 for fish-based product operators). From 2024–2025, eight Semporna fishermen and 13 downstream operators benefited from these schemes. Fishermen also receive free SKM-certified training in skills such as boat building and engine maintenance, while the e-SMART app and e-KAN platform help them locate fishing spots and sell products online. To date, eight Semporna fishermen use e-SMART, while 16 local operators on e-KAN have recorded RM5.23 million in sales. 'These efforts show our ongoing commitment to improving the well-being of fishermen in Sabah, especially in Semporna,' Peto said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? All charges are framed under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable by up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
