Sabah expands support for fishermen, including in Semporna

By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government continues to boost the livelihoods of local fishermen through various assistance programs, regardless of their registration with local Area Fishermen Associations (PNK), said Assistant Minister II Datuk Peto Galim. He said initiatives under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry include equipment aid like boats, engines, nets, GPS units, and life jackets, especially for poor and hardcore poor fishermen. As of 2024, Sabah has 26,682 fishermen, with 5,158 in Semporna. Six Semporna fishermen received direct aid this year, with another 12 expected to benefit soon. Through Ko-Nelayan, the ministry also offers microcredit via i-Nelayan (up to RM10,000 for fishing gear) and i-Hiliran (up to RM100,000 for fish-based product operators). From 2024–2025, eight Semporna fishermen and 13 downstream operators benefited from these schemes. Fishermen also receive free SKM-certified training in skills such as boat building and engine maintenance, while the e-SMART app and e-KAN platform help them locate fishing spots and sell products online. To date, eight Semporna fishermen use e-SMART, while 16 local operators on e-KAN have recorded RM5.23 million in sales. 643 roadside traders benefit cash aid

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 643 licensed roadside traders across Sabah have been identified to receive a special one-off cash assistance of RM5,000 each, involving a total RM3.215 million, as of April this year. Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Isnin Aliasneh said the initiative aimed at supporting small businesses, following criteria approved by the State Cabinet during a meeting on March 19 this year. He was replying to Nominated Assemblywoman Datuk Amisah Yassin, who sought details on the distribution of the aid, including in the district of Ranau. Isnin said the State Ministry of Finance had already channelled the necessary allocations to the relevant local authorities (PBT) based on the number of qualified recipients. He said these lump sum payment funds would be distributed directly to eligible traders. 'This one-off RM5,000 assistance is targeted at small licensed roadside traders across the state to help them sustain their businesses,' he said. Sabah records RM35.4 billion investments under SMJ 1.0 development plan

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah recorded RM35.38 billion in total investments between 2021 and 2024 under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 development plan, with 420 approved projects comprising both domestic and foreign investments. Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, said the State saw the realisation of 52 investments worth RM17.42 billion during that period. He told the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that RM10.9 billion in investment was approved in the first quarter of this year alone. 'Of the RM35.38 billion total, RM20.61 billion came from domestic sources while RM14.77 billion was contributed by foreign investors,' he said in response to a question from Nabawan Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin. Nizam noted that domestic investments exceeded foreign investments in both 2023 and 2024, with RM11.21 billion and RM5.37 billion recorded, respectively. 'In 2023, foreign investments amounted to only RM130 million, while in 2024, they reached RM1.08 billion,' he said. He said foreign investments focused on specialised sectors such as copper foil manufacturing, solar panels, oil and gas, and steel production. 'In comparison, domestic investors were involved in a broader range of industries outside of those specialised sectors,' he added. Nizam said the State's success in attracting investors reflected growing confidence in Sabah's economy under the current administration.
