Centre To Study Cloudburst After Himachal Suffers Rs 1,000 Crore Damage
CM Sukhu met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday and apprised him that the state had suffered damages amounting to around Rs 1000 crore, even as the monsoon had just begun.
Speaking to the media, the CM said, "A discussion was held with the Home Minister regarding the disaster that struck Himachal Pradesh. The disaster has caused significant damage. The Home Minister stated that he will personally visit Himachal Pradesh in the coming days. He has instructed the concerned official that there is a need to study the cloudburst incidents. A central team will soon visit Himachal Pradesh to study the cloudburst and the damage caused by the disaster. I have also raised the issue of a special relief package, and the Home Minister said that it would be considered after the central team visit."
During the meeting, CM Sukhu informed Home Minister Shah that precious lives had been lost and key infrastructure, including roads, bridges, buildings, irrigation schemes, water supply schemes and electricity supply systems, had been severely affected during this disaster.
The Chief Minister requested support from the Central Government for relief and restoration works.
He further said that natural disasters had become a recurring phenomenon since 2023 and the state had incurred cumulative losses of approximately Rs 21,000 crore over the last three years, as per the release.
He added that the state government was making every effort to provide relief to the affected people through the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). However, due to the repeated occurrence of such disasters, it had become increasingly difficult for the state to undertake restoration works and rebuild infrastructure with its limited resources.
CM Sukhu also held a discussion with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding the NH road projects.
CM Sukhu said, "We had a discussion with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding the National Highway and NHAI. We have asked the minister that, as a disaster has hit the state, we should get funds under the Central Road Fund (CRF). The minister has said that he will consider all the issues."

Ashok Gehlot questions Amit Shah on delay in Kanhaiyalal case probe
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has raised questions over the prolonged delay in justice for Kanhaiyalal, whose murder became a political flashpoint ahead of the previous Assembly elections. Taking to social media just ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Jaipur, Gehlot alleged that despite quick action by the Rajasthan Police, the case has seen no substantial progress under the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which falls under Shah's ministry. Gehlot recalled that before the 2023 Assembly elections, Amit Shah repeatedly invoked the Kanhaiyalal case in election rallies across Rajasthan to target the then Congress-led state government. 'In this case, the Rajasthan Police arrested the accused within just four hours. Both were found to be linked to the BJP. Yet the NIA took over the investigation overnight. We did not object, despite that,' Gehlot stated. He alleged that the BJP misled the public with false claims of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 50 lakh compensation being paid, which he claimed significantly contributed to the Congress government's defeat. 'Even after three years, justice has not been served. The NIA court doesn't even have a regular judge, and it has failed to get the statements of key witnesses recorded to date,' Gehlot added. Demanding answers from the Union Home Minister, Gehlot questioned how much longer Kanhaiyalal's family will have to wait for justice. 'The BJP used this case for political mileage, but they have done nothing to ensure speedy justice,' he said. He urged Shah to speak on the status of the case during his Jaipur visit and asked whether the Centre plans to strengthen the judicial process or continue using such sensitive matters for political benefit. It needs to be mentioned here that Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will visit Jaipur to participate in the Cooperative and Employment Festival being organised in Dadiya village on Thursday. The event is set to bring several major benefits to Rajasthan. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said that over 8,000 youth will receive appointment letters during the event. He also confirmed that Union Minister Shah will announce several developmental initiatives for the state. As part of the programme, HM Shah will inaugurate 24 warehouses constructed under the Food Storage Scheme and launch 64 millet outlets to promote "Shri Anna". In addition, loans worth approximately Rs 12 crore will be distributed to 1,400 beneficiaries under the Gopal Credit Card Scheme. He will also hand over 2,346 micro ATMs to milk-producing cooperative societies. A significant highlight of the event will be the launch of the White Revolution 2.0 PDCS online registration platform, aimed at streamlining the dairy cooperative sector. HM Shah will also flag off 100 new police vehicles during the occasion. The Home Minister is expected to visit an exhibition showcasing the achievements of the Cooperative Department, underlining the government's commitment to empowering the rural economy and youth employment

Amit Shah in Jaipur for Cooperative Festival; Gehlot raises Kanhaiyalal case, demands answers
JAIPUR: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah is visiting Dadiya village in Jaipur on Thursday to attend the Co-operation and Employment Festival. During the event, major announcements related to the cooperative sector are expected, and appointment letters will be distributed among the youth. However, the visit has drawn sharp political reactions. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot criticised the Union Minister, demanding answers over the lack of progress in the Kanhaiyalal murder case. 'Today Union Home Minister Amit Shah is coming to Jaipur. Before the assembly elections, you mentioned the Kanhaiyalal case in every rally in Rajasthan and asked for votes in his name,' Gehlot posted on X. He accused the BJP of misleading the public on compensation to the victim's family. 'Rajasthan Police arrested the accused within four hours. Both were associated with the BJP. Despite this, the NIA, under your ministry, took over the case overnight. We didn't object. But the BJP continued to spread lies about compensation, which was one of the major reasons behind our government's fall,' he wrote. Gehlot expressed dismay over the slow pace of justice. 'Three years have passed, but the NIA court has not delivered any sentence. There isn't even a regular judge in the NIA court here, and witness statements haven't been recorded yet,' he said. He urged Shah to respond to the people of Rajasthan: 'How long will Kanhaiyalal's family wait for justice? Will the BJP continue to politicise the issue, or is it serious about delivering justice?' On June 28, 2022, Kanhaiyalal, a tailor from Udaipur, was brutally murdered by two men after he posted content on social media in support of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The attackers recorded the killing and shared the video online, sparking nationwide outrage. The case was later handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Tunnel project row: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya challenges Dy CM Shivakumar to public debate
Bengaluru: National President of the BJP Yuva Morcha and MP Tejasvi Surya on Thursday challenged Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, who is also the Bengaluru Development Minister for an open talk and public debate regarding the Bengaluru tunnel project. Tejasvi Surya claimed that the project only helps elite car owners and won't reduce the traffic jams in Bengaluru. Responding to the attacks by Surya, Karnataka Congress had stated on its social media handle X, "This isn't about political credit. It's about 'Brand Bengaluru', a city that needs the state and Centre to work together. We welcome public audits, technical scrutiny, and open debate. But don't stall progress by labelling every transformative project as wasteful. Citizens deserve efficient execution, not polarised discourse." Surya refering to this, stated on Thursday, "If you truly welcome technical scrutiny and public debate on this tunnel road project, I propose an open discussion with Dy CM Shivakumar who is spearheading this project. Let the time and place be of your choosing." "It will definitely be beneficial to discuss the merits and demerits in a healthy way. Am waiting to hear back from you. Thanks," he said. "When we oppose Bengaluru's tunnel road project, some cite Singapore as a model. But even Singapore scrapped similar mega tunnel plans after realising they were costly, unsustainable and ineffective at decongestion. Don't cherry-pick examples. Learn from Singapore's correction too," Surya stated. He further asked Dy CM Shivakumar, "Why should we repeat mistakes others have walked away from?" "BJP will strongly oppose the tunnel road project, which is nothing but a loot of public money under the guise of development," the Bengaluru South MP claimed. "This 18-km tunnel road project for Bengaluru, costing Rs 18,500 crore, is planned exclusively for cars from Hebbal to Dairy Circle. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and feasibility report are riddled with inconsistencies and irregularities," Surya claimed. According to the report, the tunnel can carry 600–1,600 people per hour and if bikes and two-wheelers are allowed, it could handle about 7,500 people per hour. However, as of now, the plan allows no access for buses, autos or two-wheelers. The BJP MP has raised objections to the project stating that if a Metro were built instead, it could carry 25,000 people per hour. 'Do we want a project that helps only car owners or a metro project that benefits 25,000 people per hour?' Surya asked. The Deputy Chief Minister himself said a toll would be levied on the tunnel. The DPR mentions one way toll fee of Rs 660. 'How many people in Bengaluru can afford to pay Rs 660 daily to commute?' he asked. 'This is a tunnel for the millionaires of Sadashivanagar, Dollar's Colony, and 4th Block Koramangala. It seems tailor-made to help D.K. Shivakumar and his close relatives travel to their homes in Koramangala,' Surya alleged. Surya stated, 'BJP opposes the tunnel road project. We will fight to ensure that every single rupee of the people is protected.'
