Texas Earns Commitment From Top 10 College Football Recruit
The Texas Longhorns landed a recruit from ACC country on Friday via the 2026 recruiting class.
On3's Hayes Fawcett reported that four-star cornerback Samari Matthews committed to the Longhorns over the South Carolina Gamecocks, Florida State Seminoles and Miami Hurricanes.
Matthews is a native of Huntersville, North Carolina, and attends Williams Amos Hough High School. He is listed at 6-feet-tall, 180 pounds.
He also held offers from the North Carolina Tar Heels, Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, Penn State Nittany Lions, and others.
Matthews is the second corner from the 2026 class to pick the Longhorns, joining four-star prospect Hayward Howard Jr.
Matthews is the No. 9 cornerback in the On3 Industry Rankings for the 2026 cycle. He is also the No. 6 prospect from the state of North Carolina.
The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine had South Carolina as the next closest team to land the corner, at 14.5%.
Matthews joins a class highlighted by five-star quarterback Dia Bell, five-star edge rusher Richard Wesley and four-star inside offensive lineman John Turntine.
While Texas added the commitment of Matthews, the Longhorns have missed on a couple of prospects from the class lately. Four-star athlete Jalen Lott chose the Oregon Ducks over Texas.
The top athlete from the class, Lamar Brown, named Texas a finalist, but ultimately committed to the LSU Tigers.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian is fresh off a consecutive College Football Playoff berth and took his team to the SEC Championship Game in year one in the conference.
Texas faces the Ohio State Buckeyes to open the 2025 season on August 30.This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 12, 2025, where it first appeared.

Luka Doncic is named an ambassador for ESPN's Take Back Sports initiative
Armed with a new three-year, $165 million contract extension that he agreed to on Saturday, Luka Doncic can stay in the moment, as he will be a member of the Los Angeles Lakers for at least the next three seasons. He is about to take part in the EuroBasket tournament overseas. The competition's exhibition slate of games will start on Friday, and the actual tournament will commence near the end of this month. In the meantime, Doncic is teaming up with ESPN to become a Take Back Sports ambassador in order to promote an active lifestyle for children. 'Play changed my life. Every kid deserves the chance to play, learn, grow, have fun and make friends,' said Luka Dončić. 'The Luka Dončić Foundation and ESPN's Take Back Sports initiative are focused on making youth sports more accessible and less stressful for everyone. Together, we can bring the joy back to the game.' The Take Back Sports initiative was started earlier this year in collaboration with Golden State Warriors living legend Stephen Curry and his wife Ayesha's Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation. Now Doncic is a part of this large initiative that is not only encouraging kids to be active but is also looking to prevent kids from quitting sports. Quarterback Lamar Jackson and running back Derrick Henry from the Baltimore Ravens and retired NFL stars Eli and Peyton Manning are just a few other athletes who have also been named as ambassadors for the Take Back Sports initiative.
