NEET student dies by suicide in Sikar; 18th this year in Rajasthan
According to police, the victim, a native of Rajasthan's Balotra, took admission to a reputed coaching centre in Sikar only three days ago. 'He had been staying in a hostel in the district's Udhyog Nagar area. On Saturday, he died by suicide in his room,' said the sub inspector (SI) of Udhyog Nagar police station, Rohitansh Kumar.
'His friends knocked on the door late at night. When he did not respond, the hostel authority broke open the door and found him dead,' the SI added.
'Prima facie, he went to the coaching centre only on Friday. No suicide note was recovered. The body was sent for an autopsy. His family was also informed. Further probe is underway,' he said.
Kumar also said that officials are probing why an anti-hanging device was not installed in the room.
Amid a surge in suicide cases in Kota and Sikar, where students from all over the country arrive in huge numbers after completing Class 10 to prepare for various competitive exams — including JEE and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET-UG for admission to medical courses —, the state government in September 2023 issued several guidelines for hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations, including installation of spring-loaded fans in rooms 'to provide students mental support and security'.

NEET SS 2024 Counselling: NBEMS reduces qualifying percentile for the stray round
NEET SS 2024 Counselling: The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has lowered the qualifying percentile for the NEET SS 2025, enabling all candidates with a valid broad speciality degree to participate in the stray vacancy round of counselling. The NEET SS 2024 results were announced on April 25, following the exam held on March 29 and 30, which had three time-bound sections for the first time. As per the notification shared,' The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India vide letter No. U.12021/09/2025-MEC dated 10th July 2025 has allowed all the candidates who had appeared for NEET-SS 2024 exam with an eligible broad speciality degree (MD/MS/DNB) to participate in the Stray round of NEET-SS Super Speciality Counselling 2024,'. Moreover, the candidature is provisional, as mentioned on the NBEMS notice. The candidature is subject to the fulfilment of eligibility criteria as mentioned in the NEET-SS 2024 information bulletin and verification of Face ID/Biometric wherever required. Candidates are advised to stay in touch with the website of the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for the latest information related to the upcoming NEET-SS 2024 stray round counselling. For any SS queries, students can connect with NBEMS at 011-45593000 or write to NBEMS at its Communication Web Portal. Meanwhile, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has postponed the stray round of NEET SS counselling, citing overlap with Tamil Nadu's Round 2 counselling for in-service candidates. Additionally, MCC has permitted candidates who secured seats through INI SS counselling to resign from NEET SS 2025, though their security deposits will be forfeited. Last year, the NEET SS exam was conducted on September 9 and September 10 in CBT mode (Computer-Based Test) in two groups: morning and evening shift. Additionally, previous year scoring more than 50 per cent qualified in NEET-SS in their respective field of specialty.

Centre appoints Abhijat Sheth as new chairperson of National Medical Commission
The government has appointed Abhijat Sheth as the new chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC), the apex medical education regulatory body . He succeeds Dr B N Gangadhar , who had resigned last October citing health reasons. However, he continued to work in the position as his resignation was not accepted as there was no suitable candidate available for the post.
