Simple Plan documentary: Band calls record labels 'irresponsible' for lacking support systems as artists find success

Yahoo19 hours ago
Canadian band Simple Plan has been making music for 25 years. From their childhood basements in Montreal to performing on some of the biggest stages around the world, now the band has gone back to the archives, revealing some of the earliest memories of Simple Plan, while reflecting on their legacy in the Prime Video documentary Simple Plan: The Kids In The Crowd.
For lead guitar player Jeff Stinco, he actually wasn't even particularly on board to make a documentary in the first place. But as the band worked through the process of creating the film, elements of their dynamic and the impact of their music became particularly revealing.
"I did not want to do it at all," Stinco told Yahoo Canada.
"We were approached about this documentary. We spoke about it quite a bit. And at first I think we were sort of interested in showing the world how big the band was in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and how it had grown way above anything that people kind of knew. But then it became so much more. It became more about the human relationships. It became more about the hardships that we had to go through to become the band that we are now. ... I think the movie is more human than it is a glorification of a career."
As the documentary presents, drummer Chuck Comeau made a particular push for Simple Plan to find success. Comeau's father is a significant voice in the film, expressing how he had a hard time understanding why his son would throw away his law school opportunity to play in a band.
Comeau described the process of seeing the journey his father went on to understand his drive for Simple Plan to succeed as "really emotional."
"I have a very, very close relationship with my parents, with my dad, we speak every day, still to this day. And he came on tour with us," Comeau said. "But at the time when we were starting out, and trying to explain to them this is what I want to do, it's not just a hobby, I think for him it was, I'll support you all the way, but obviously you're going to go to college and you're going to have a regular job."
"I think it was hard for him to understand, to wrap his head around that, because there was really no model for him in his mind. It just didn't exist. It was not possible. ... I think there was a lot of just feeling misunderstood by my dad, even though [my parents] were extremely supportive. ... That's where the song 'Perfect' came from. So that's why it felt important, because so much of ... the story comes from that dynamic, that relationship, and from our families."
'Irresponsible' for record labels to not have a support system for artists
Among the topics the band's members, Comeau, Stinco, leader singer Pierre Bouvier and guitarist Sébastien Lefebvre, talk about in the documentary is what happens when you find fame, including making the statement that it's "irresponsible" for record labels to not have a "support system" for artists dealing with the rising demands of success.
Additionally, Bouvier opens up about having panic attacks and having to prioritize his time away from the spotlight. That personal time is where he differs from Comeau.
"I think some of the biggest challenges that we have between us is that [Chuck] doesn't have an off switch," Bouvier said. "I think it's commendable, but for me, I'm just not like that. ... I'm also a singer, so the nature of what I do on tour, I cannot be talking all day long. I cannot be playing a three hour concert followed by a meet and greet with 100 fans, and we did one beforehand, with a sound check, with five exclusive songs, I just can't do it."
"I have to sometimes put my foot down and be like, 'I'm not doing that.' And I also enjoy having some time to myself. ... I think Chuck, even though he may sometimes like playing hockey or some other sport, the guy wakes up and the first thing he thinks about is the band. ... I want to do other things. ... When we started doing this documentary, you want to pull up the curtain. ... Let's open up these doors and show people what the struggles are, not just the things to celebrate."
"And it's still uncomfortable sometimes to even have these conversations, to hear that. It's tough, but at the same time, I embrace it," Comeau added.
But when it comes to tensions within the band, Stinco believes the band still has work to do.
"I feel that we need to work on our relationship as a band, because we still have some of the same dynamics that we had when we were 13 and 14," Stinco said. "I think we have some work to do. We have post-documentary therapy ahead of us."
"But that being said, I've also witnessed some beautiful moments of friendship and a very wonderful support system. ... The guys have always been there for me and I see that in the documentary, and it really touched me a lot."
'I feel a sense of responsibility'
A core element of The Kids in the Crowd documentary is Simple Plan reflecting on the feedback they've gotten from fans for songs that have really helped them through difficult times, including tracks like "Perfect" and "Welcome To My Life."
"I feel a sense of responsibility," Stinco said. "I feel that I have to live up to that role that people give me."
"It's funny how those very personal stories became so universal. ... I feel that I need to be the best version of myself, to sort of live up to the success that we had and to not disappoint our fans. But the reality is, it's just music. And I'm glad that the songs, the lyrics, really have an effect on people. And I'm going to just basically celebrate those songs with every show we play by giving the best performance and making sure that when I meet fans, I'm the kindest and most attentive ... person I can be. Because I've met a lot of very big celebrities that were shitheads, and I never wanted to be that person."
"I think it started to change when we released 'Perfect' as a music video," Comeau said in a separate interview. "That opened up a whole new dimension for the band, because that was a true, meaningful, personal connection. People felt seen."
"Honestly, when we wrote the song, we knew it was a good song, but we put it last on the record because we thought it was so personal that it wouldn't really connect with that many people. ... But then what we realized is that the more personal you get in songwriting, the more personal you get in your stories, the more it hits home, because it feels genuine. It feels authentic. It feels honest and people started to connect with that song. We would play it, and even before it was a single, ... people would be crying in the front row. They would give us these letters saying like, 'I played the song for my dad because he doesn't understand me.' And it just it opened up a whole new way of looking at what bands and artists can do in society. It can be like lifeline."
"Songwriting is an interesting thing, because you set out with a goal and you set out to obviously write songs that will impact people, but you're kind of trying to catch lightning in a bottle," Bouvier added. "And I feel like we always swing our hardest and try our best, but I, just in hindsight, I feel so grateful that we were able to catch these songs that have been there for people, that have been along the journey of life with some people, and that have impacted them in a way that, even 20 years later, they'll hear it and remember where they were and remember what they were going through."
While the current Simple Plan band members participated in the documentary, there's only a brief mention of former member David Desrosiers, who left after facing multiple sexual misconduct allegations.
As the band indicates in the documentary, following what happened with Desrosiers, there was a focus on ensuring that everything that surrounded the band was a "safe space."
While that's something that maybe could have been addressed in more depth, what the current members of Simple Plan were striving to do was to be, as they described, "honest" and "authentic" about their experiences.

Christina Haack and Tarek El Moussa's shows canceled at HGTV, per reports. Here's a complete timeline of their home renovation series and spinoffs.

Real estate moguls and exes Christina Haack and Tarek El Moussa are each saying goodbye to one of their HGTV shows, according to reports. A source confirmed to People that HGTV has decided not to renew Haack's Christina on the Coast for another season. The second half of Season 5 of the series debuted in February, just three months after Haack's other show, Christina in the Country, premiered its second season late last year. Haack's ex-husband, Tarek El Moussa, and his wife, Selling Sunset's Heather Rae El Moussa, are also bidding adieu to one of their shows. While the couple does have another season of The Flip Off underway, in which Haack also costars, HGTV did not renew their other show, The Flipping El Moussas, a source told People. The second season of The Flipping El Moussas debuted on the network in December 2024. Haack and El Moussa established themselves as HGTV mainstays in 2013, with the premiere of their 10-season series Flip or Flop. The pair first embarked on their journey with the network as a married couple, before their divorce in 2018. Together, Haack and El Moussa have debuted several shows over the last decade. Below, take a look at their entire roster of series — from the one that started it all to the array of home improvement spinoffs that followed. 'Flip or Flop' (2013-2022) Premiering on HGTV in April 2013, Flip or Flop was Haack and El Moussa's introduction to the world of network television. Haack and El Moussa, who'd been married nearly four years at the time of the show's premiere, chronicled their experiences buying and remodeling fixer-uppers in California. While the series maintained its popularity on the network, Haack and El Moussa announced that they were separating in December 2016. Season 7 marked the first season Haack and El Moussa filmed after deciding to separate. 'Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage," the statement read. "We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution." They continued, "During this process, we are committed to our kids and being the best parents we can be. We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together." The real estate agents' statement came almost seven months after an explosive altercation took place in their former Orange County, Calif., home, which resulted in police intervention. With a total of 10 seasons and 155 episodes, Flip or Flop reportedly garnered more than 90 million viewers since its premiere. The series was ultimately canceled in 2022, when the show reportedly became 'too intimate' for Haack and El Moussa, who divorced in 2018. Haack and El Moussa continue to co-parent their two children together, daughter Taylor and son Brayden. 'Flip or Flop Follow-Up' (2015) Airing just six episodes, Flip or Flop Follow-Up saw Haack and El Moussa revisit a series of memorable home flips and share a deeper look into the process of remodeling them. 'Christina on the Coast' (2019-2025) Haack, a real estate and flipping expert in her own right, embarked on a solo journey with Christina on the Coast, which debuted in May 2019. Over six seasons, audiences watched as Haack helped clients transform their once lackluster homes into high-end properties in Southern California. The series also gave audiences a look into Haack's personal life after separating from El Moussa. Viewers watched as she balanced parenthood and her career as well as her day-to-day life with ex-husbands Ant Anstead, with whom she shares son Hudson, and Texas realtor Josh Hall. Haack announced the premiere of Christina on the Coast in a June 2018 Instagram post, writing, 'I'm so excited to announce my new series on HGTV called Christina on the Coast, which will debut in early 2019! I will be helping homeowners redesign their outdated properties into beautiful spaces!' The second half of Season 5 debuted in February of this year and was just canceled, according to multiple news outlets. 'Tarek's Flip Side' (2019) In 2019, El Moussa launched an HGTV exclusive digital series called Tarek's Flip Side, in which he gives viewers a more intimate look at his personal life. 'Flipping 101 with Tarek El Moussa' (2021-present) Premiering in a one-hour format in August 2021, Flipping 101 with Tarek El Moussa follows the real estate mogul as he walks real estate novices through the process of successfully flipping a house. While it hasn't formally been canceled, the show's latest season debuted and concluded in 2023. The show also featured El Moussa's second wife, Heather, a luxury real estate agent whom he married in October 2021. The pair welcomed their first child together, son Tristan, in February 2023. 'Christina: Stronger by Design' (2021) Christina: Stronger by Design ran for a single season in 2021 and documented Haack as she embarked on a new chapter of her life with ex-husband Anstead. The series ran for just four episodes. 'Christina in the Country' (2023-present) Expanding beyond her Southern California lifestyle, Christina in the Country follows Haack as she establishes a home for herself in Tennessee. Watching as she expands her clientele to the South, the series follows Haack as she helps Tennessee residents revitalize their spaces through intentional design. Haack's third ex-husband, Hall, was featured in the series, which concluded its second season in December 2024. 'The Flipping El Moussas' (2023-2025) Starring Heather and Tarek, The Flipping El Moussas chronicles the intertwining of the couple's personal and professional lives as they navigate their marriage and careers in real estate. This was recently canceled, per reports. 'The Flip Off' (2025) The El Moussas teamed up with Haack for The Flip Off, which premiered on HGTV in January. Back together professionally, Christina and Tarek have joined forces once more, this time with Tarek's wife, Heather Rae, as they compete to see who can 'find, buy, renovate and flip a house for the biggest financial gain,' per HGTV. Fans have been quick to praise Christina and Heather's friendship. Heather Rae recently posted a tribute to Haack for her 42nd birthday. 'Happy birthday @christinahaack,' she wrote in an Instagram Story on July 9. 'It's crazy how far we've come & most will never understand how we are friends. I'm grateful for our relationship & our ability to rise above the noise! Cheers to you & can't wait to celebrate you! Xo.' Solve the daily Crossword

Their father, Kevin Jonas Sr., was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2017 and has been in remission since 2018. "[The] more emotionally challenging periods really test your endurance," Nick, 32, says. "But [our dad] was just such a champion and so brave through our whole process. It [was] with such thoughtfulness that I think it helped all of us a lot and provided us with the encouragement we needed when in fact we were just trying to support him." "Everyone has their own experience too in life's challenging moments and I'm so grateful that we have gotten to the other side of that and become closer as a family and stronger," adds the singer. "It was really nice to spend time and get to know them a bit more and hear their stories and just to be a part of their journey in some capacity or a distraction musically to help them through a little bit of what they're going through." Nick calls the chorus to their new song "an anthem to persevere" despite things not going their way. "The song is all about spreading a message of hope," he says. "The sentiment alongside MasterCard and Stand Up to Cancer just made perfect sense. Anytime we can be a very small part of someone's journey through tough times in life, we're really grateful for that. And writing and recording songs like this that speak to that message of hope is really important to us."
