In a dramatic twist in the Pune rape case, police said the accusations made by a 22-year-old techie in Pune, who claimed that she was raped by a man posing as a courier delivery agent, were 'false and misleading". The woman had alleged that the man came to her doorstep to deliver a courier and spray some chemical on her face to make her unconscious and then allegedly raped her. She had also claimed that he had taken a selfie from her phone and left a message: 'I'll be back". The police had registered a case based on her complaints on Thursday. In a shocking twist, the police found that the two were actually friends, and there was no forced entry into her residence after the accused – a highly qualified professional – was arrested. Even the selfie on her phone was clicked with her consent and was edited by her. Additionally, the woman told police during interrogation that she had filed the complaint 'out of anger" as he had forced himself upon her that evening when she was 'not ready for sexual intercourse". They had reportedly met at her residence in the past as well, when her parents were away. Speaking to reporters, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, 'The evidence, including phone chats, the sequence of events, mobile communication, and the conduct of the woman points out that it is not a case of rape. The complaint filed by her was entirely false and misleading." Police are yet to decide the potential action against the woman, Kumar added, while her motive is still under investigation. The woman had earlier told investigators that her unstable mental condition prompted her to make the false claim of rape. Kumar also lamented that the case circulated 'narratives" that Pune was unsafe for women, highlighting the fact that cops had established within 24 hours that the case was misleading. 'A complaint of a serious crime was registered two days back which spawned narratives about the law and order situation in Pune and questioned the safety of women," he said. 'Pune Police are committed to maintaining law and order, and we will continue to strengthen the safety with the support of citizens."
