If Omar wants only statehood then we are on the same page: Sunil Sharma

Hindustan Times11 hours ago
As the debate on restoration of statehood heats up with Congress hitting roads across J&K, BJP's leader of Opposition in the assembly Sunil Sharma said if chief minister Omar Abdullah wants only statehood then they are on the same page. Now it seems the BJP too has softened its stand on the statehood restoration though some of party leaders are saying statehood shouldn't be granted unless it gets clearance from the ministry of home affairs and security agencies. (ANI File)
The NC, Congress and other political parties have now increased their pitch for statehood with Congress J&K president Tariq Karra asking other political parties of state to join his party for statehood restoration protests. Congress recently held a protest for statehood at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and its leaders said the protests will continue until statehood is granted which Congress leaders described as the right of people of J&K.
Now it seems the BJP too has softened its stand on the statehood restoration though some of party leaders are saying statehood shouldn't be granted unless it gets clearance from the ministry of home affairs and security agencies.
'If the NC is seeking statehood without Article 370 and without Martyrs Day, just like a normal state then we are on the same page,' Sunil Sharma told a local news agency and said that Article 370 is now 'buried forever.'
The latest statement from the senior BJP looks a departure from the past when all BJP leaders advocated that statehood shouldn't be restored till the situation gets normal.
On Thursday, Karra said other political parties should join Congress to fight for statehood. 'Congress will organise a series of protests for statehood from August 1. Even August 5 will be observed as black day and there will be a hunger strike on August 9,' Karra said while urging leaders and workers of other political parties to be part of this fight for statehood.

'Stay home to avoid rape': Row over safety drive posters in Gujarat, police say...

Posters put up as part of a safety campaign in Gujarat have sparked a controversy, as the messaging on them urged women to stay home and "don't go to late-night parties" or they would be raped. Visuals of such posters being put up on the streets went viral on Saturday, with claims that they were sponsored by the Ahmedabad traffic police.(Made using AI/Representative) Visuals of such posters being put up on the streets went viral on Saturday, with claims that they were sponsored by the Ahmedabad traffic police. Posters with messages such as "do not attend late night parties, you could be raped or gangraped," and "do not go with your friend to dark, isolated areas, what if she is raped or gangraped?" were pasted on road dividers, reported news agency PTI. Taking cognisance of the issue, Safin Hasan, Deputy Police Commissioner, Traffic Branch, said that a vigilance group had taken permission from the Ahmedabad Traffic Police before putting up the posters to spread traffic awareness. "However, going outside the purview of traffic awareness, they had posted these posters," Hasan told news agency ANI, adding that the banners have since been taken down. The official also said that the police have filed a report regarding the installation of these banners, "including details such as whether permission from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation was obtained, the purpose of installation, and the individuals responsible". The case will be further investigated on these factors. A video of the poster was posted by the Gujarat unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), slamming the BJP-led state government. "The chief minister and BJP leaders talk about women's safety, but today in a big city like Ahmedabad, these posters express the reality of Gujarat. Our question to the CM is whether the women of Gujarat should go out of the house at night or not?" the statement read. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic West), Neeta Desai told PTI that an NGO named 'Satarkata Group' had put up the posters. "The NGO had approached us and said they wanted to organise traffic awareness programmes in schools and colleges and wanted our staff to accompany them. We were shown posters related to traffic awareness. But such controversial posters were not shown to us and were plastered without our consent," Desai said.

JD(U) begins women outreach drive

After the BJP, its alliance partner JD(U)'s women's wing has launched an intensive public outreach campaign — from the state to the booth level — to connect with the state's women voters as the assembly polls in the state are drawing near. JD(U) begins women outreach drive Women form nearly 48% of the total voting population. As against BJP's women outreach plan aimed at covering 120 assembly segments in first phase, the JD(U) has started its campaign to reach out to women across the state and in all constituencies simultaneously. The party held an important meeting of women leaders recently in which state party president Umesh Kushwaha held a detailed discussion keeping the goal of '225 seats in 2025 and Nitish again' at the centre. 'A strategy was decided to strengthen the organisation, ensure active participation of women workers and accelerate the work of the party at the grassroots level. It was also decided that the women's unit of JD(U) will run an extensive public relations campaign and will take the welfare schemes and developmental achievements of the government to the people,' said Kushwaha. 'Under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, Bihar has witnessed transformative initiatives aimed at women empowerment, bringing remarkable changes to their lives. Landmark measures such as free education for girls from KG to post-graduation, prohibition of alcohol, free bicycles for school-going girls, 35% reservation for women in government jobs, and 50% reservation in panchayat elections have significantly uplifted the status of women across the state,' said Anupriya Yadav, JD(U) state spokesperson. The JD (U) does not want to leave these achievements and works go unnoticed. 'To further spread awareness of these achievements, the women's wing of JD(U) has launched a campaign wherein female party workers will visit every district, engaging women through community talks, door-to-door visits, and seminars. This outreach aims to ensure that the positive impact of CM Nitish Kumar's policies is communicated effectively, inspiring more women to take advantage of these opportunities. Such initiatives not only showcase progressive governance but also pave the way for a more inclusive and empowered Bihar,' said Anupriya Yadav. The JD(U) feels that Kumar's contribution to the welfare and upliftment of women is unmatched in any other state of the country. Earlier, Kumar himself, in a bid to reach out to women voters, had launched 'Mahila Samvad Rath' under which JD(U) workers visited different districts of Bihar and inform women about the efforts made by the Nitish government to uplift their socio-economic condition. The campaign also highlighted the schemes related to women's empowerment, employment, and education. The Nitish government is also relying heavily on the members of the 10.75 lakh women self-help groups (SHGs) to 'act as a link' between the JD(U) and women voters, a party leader said, adding that 'women are the political force of the JD(U)'. 'Though the women voters are not taken seriously by parties, they have turned out to be the decisive voters in the recent Bihar Assembly elections 2020. This was the third time consecutively when women had outnumbered the men voters. In three phases of Bihar elections, women voters' turnout increased consistently from the first phase to the third phase. In the first phase, they voted 5% more than men, in the second phase 6%, and in the third phase, they outnumbered men by 11% benefitting NDA the most,' said Gyananendra Yadav, associate professor of Sociology, College of Commerce, Patna.

'He Has His Reasons...': Shashi Tharoor Reacts To Rahul Gandhi's Remark On Trump Tariffs

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor responded cautiously after Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi agreed with U.S. President Donald Trump's 'dead economy' remark on India. Tharoor said he wouldn't comment on his party leader's statement but emphasized that India's strategic and economic relationship with the U.S. is vital. Highlighting India's $90 billion worth of exports to the U.S., he warned against any risk to this trade. Tharoor urged support for Indian negotiators to secure a fair deal and advocated expanding exports to other regions to offset potential losses. He underscored the need to protect India's global trade interests amid tense economic commentary.#shashitharoor #rahulgandhi #donaldtrump #indianeconomy #indiaustrade #tradetalks #congress #toi #toibharat
