ED attaches 9 properties, bank accounts worth ₹14 crore of ex-principal secretary to former CM Bhupinder Hooda
The probe agency shared the information on Monday, stating that the attached immovable properties include two houses and seven apartments.
The federal agency stated that a provisional attachment order for these properties, located in Chandigarh, Delhi, and Gurugram, was issued on 30 June under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The case is based on a CBI FIR accusing Tayal and his family of amassing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. Tayal also served on the Competition Commission of India (CCI) from 2009 to 2014. The ED scrutinised the income tax filings and stock market activities of Tayal, his wife Savita, and son Kartik during the probe.
During the check period (2006–2014), the accused acquired disproportionate assets worth ₹ 14.06 crore using proceeds of crime generated through illegal gratification, the ED alleged.
In a bizarre incident last month, Bhubaneswar witnessed cash raining from an apartment window as Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, a Chief Engineer in Odisha's Rural Development Department, allegedly tried to dispose of bundles of ₹ 500 notes. Sarangi, a state government employee, was under investigation for corruption and disproportionate assets. The vigilance department recovered over ₹ 2.1 crore in cash during simultaneous raids at seven locations across Angul, Bhubaneswar, and Pipili (Puri).
The raids were conducted at Sarangi's double-storeyed residence in Karadagadia (Angul), flats in Dumduma (Bhubaneswar) and Puri, a relative's house in Sikshyakapada (Angul), his paternal house and paternal building in Angul, and his office chamber. In a desperate attempt to evade the officers, Sarangi threw the cash bundles out of his Bhubaneswar flat's window, but the vigilance team later recovered them in the presence of witnesses.

SC stays PMLA trial as chargesheet in predicate case pending for 7 yrs
The Supreme Court has stayed a trial against four women accused under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) because a chargesheet in the original criminal case has not been filed even after seven years, Live Law reported. The order came from a Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, after hearing arguments by Senior Advocate PB Suresh. He appeared for the petitioners and pointed out that they were not named in the original offence (called the predicate offence). He questioned how the PMLA trial could proceed when no chargesheet had been filed in that base case. While staying the trial for the four petitioners, the Supreme Court also issued notices to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Indian Bank, which is the complainant in the original case. What is the case? In 2018, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered an FIR under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), Section 406 (criminal breach of trust), Section 420 (cheating), Section 468 (forgery), and Section 471 (using forged documents) of the Indian Penal Code. This was based on a complaint by Indian Bank against Cethar Limited and others, the news report said. Following this, the Enforcement Directorate filed a money laundering case (ECIR) based on the same FIR, which brought the petitioners under investigation. The four women approached the trial court asking to be discharged from the PMLA case, but their plea was rejected. They then filed a criminal revision petition, which was also dismissed by the Madras High Court. Left with no other option, they approached the Supreme Court. What did the petitioners say? All four petitioners are women and family members of the former Chairman and Managing Director of Cethar Limited. They claim they had no role in the company's financial or operational decisions. According to petitioners, they have been accused only because of their relationship with the former MD. They also pointed out that they are not named in the original FIR by the CBI and that there is no proof showing they received or controlled any "proceeds of crime". Despite this, their jewellery and other belongings have been seized, and the company itself is now under liquidation, Live Law reported. Similar cases cited To support their plea, the petitioners referred to the Telangana High Court's decision in Bharathi Cement Corporation Pvt. Ltd vs Directorate of Enforcement. In that case, the high court had paused the PMLA trial until the main case (predicate offence) was decided by the special court. That case involved alleged bribery and irregular allotment of mining leases to Bharathi Cement Corporation, linked to the Andhra Pradesh government. The ED had filed a money laundering case against the company and others, including Bharathi Reddy, wife of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy. While the case had reached the Supreme Court, it was later withdrawn at the ED's request.

ED probes Anil's RHFL for writing off Rs 7k cr loans to group firms
NEW DELHI: As the ED sifts through voluminous documents and digital records seized from Anil Ambani 's Reliance group entities during searches, which began on July 24 and concluded on Sunday, the agency, in particular, is looking at alleged diversion of Rs 12,000 crore loans by Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL) to various related entities. ED is being assisted in its task by National Financial Reporting Authority, CBI, Security and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and National Housing Bank, since it involves misappropriation of huge public funds. At least a dozen related entities of the group are currently undergoing insolvency proceedings, which means massive haircuts for banks. Sources said 22 individuals, who are key management personnel and associates of Ambani, have come under the radar of the agency and are being investigated, besides the 60 companies that were covered during the searches lasting over 72 hours. A Sebi investigation report (shared with ED) has highlighted alleged laundering of funds by RHFL, which had written off around Rs 7,000 crore out of the Rs 12,000 crore of loans it had extended to various entities linked to the Anil Ambani group. Ambani is already under investigation for his group entity RHFL availing funds of Rs 2,965 crore from Yes Bank by allegedly paying bribes to its former CEO Rana Kapoor through his wife Bindu Kapoor and her companies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do You Speak English? A forensic audit, commissioned by the bank, has also concluded diversion of this amount to related companies. Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure, in identical statements, said, "The company and all its officials have fully cooperated and will continue to cooperate with the authority". On the alleged diversion of Rs 12,000 crore by RHFL to related entities, a company official said, "The account of RHFL has been fully resolved with change in management pursuant to the judgment of SC in 2023. ..Allegations of other irregularities are sub-judice and as a matter of fact, the Sebi order has been challenged before SAT (Securities Appellate Tribunal) since 2024". "Sebi vide its order dated Aug 22, 2024, has found that RHFL has engaged in a fraudulent scheme to divert funds for the benefit of Ambani and his group companies," a source aware of the probe said. ED is probing related party transactions, in which it was found that Reliance Infrastructure had received funds from Crest Logistics and Engineers Pvt Ltd, which in turn had received funds from at least four entities - RPL Star Power Pvt Ltd, RPL Solar Power Pvt Ltd, Species Trade and Commerce Pvt Ltd and Worldcom Solutions Ltd - all of them allegedly linked to the Anil Ambani group. According to the Sebi investigation report, the forensic audit of RHFL found that "loans of more than Rs 12,000 crore have been extended to various entities which are linked to the Anil Ambani group. These companies had a common registered address, email ID/domain, address and directors". The Sebi report further revealed that as on Sept 30, 2021, Rs 6,931 crore had been declared as NPA/written off by RHFL out of loans extended to linked/associated entities of the group.
