Man slams ‘tatkal ticket' booking process, says ‘app crashes, starts buffering'; IRCTC responds

Mint29-05-2025
A man recently tried to book a Tatkal train ticket from Delhi to Darbhanga in Bihar using the IRCTC app. But when Sonu Nigam Singh opened the app to make the booking, he was met with a pop-up message that read 'booking hasn't started yet' and asked him to 'try after some time.' What happened over the next three minutes left him completely puzzled. After refreshing the app, the train already showed a waiting list of 41.
Singh shared his frustrating experience online, saying that even with a fast internet connection, he was unable to secure a Tatkal ticket.
'Tatkal ticket booking reality,' wrote Singh while sharing two screenshots from the IRCTC app. He added, 'Booking starts at 10 am, Garib Rath Express has 240 seats under Tatkal quota.'
He explained that at 10:01 am, a message popped up on the app saying 'booking not started'. 'Then app crashes and starts buffering,' he wrote. 'App responds. Now it shows status as waiting list 41.' It's important to note that Tatkal bookings open at 10:00 am for AC classes (2A/3A/CC/EC/3E), and at 11:00 am for non-AC classes (SL/FC/2S).
Screenshots shared by Singh showed the app message: 'Booking not yet started for the selected quota and class. Please try after some time.' Although these screenshots were taken in October 2024, they have now gone viral with over a million views.
'Even with high-speed Internet, it's close to impossible to book a Tatkal ticket. No idea how agents confirm that they will get it done,' Singh added.
'How does it happen remains a mystery,' he further said.
After Singh's post gained attention, many people online shared their own experiences. One user claimed that agents use special software to grab tickets instantly.
'There is an app which will give you either a confirmed ticket or a 3x refund. Try that and support this intentional manipulation. Legalising something which is illegal is at play here. And no one's asking the right question,' wrote another user.
A third called it a 'big scam', saying, 'Many ticket buyers easily get confirmed tickets from some so-called agents, but when they try to book online or offline, they always face too many problems.'
In response, IRCTC released a statement admitting that booking times can take longer during peak hours, especially under the Tatkal quota. The company said that they are working on improving the system for all users.
'During peak booking timings, particularly during Tatkal due to high demand, seat reservations are often filled rapidly due to the high volume of users accessing the system simultaneously. As the system processes multiple requests in real-time, processing may take additional time in case of a high number of parallel requests being processed,' the statement read.

17 complaints entertained by HC ICC in a decade, most related to ‘misunderstandings': Justice Prathiba Singh

Maintaining that the Delhi High Court's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has entertained 17 complaints in the past decade, Justice Prathiba Singh on Thursday said that 'most of the complaints arise out of misunderstanding or a lack of sensitivity of the terminologies that can be used towards colleagues'. She also said that redressal for sexual harassment complaints need not only cater to women but should cover 'men and all persons with different sexual orientations, so there may be a need for change in the legislation over here'. Justice Singh, the presiding officer of the seven-member committee of the HC's ICC, was speaking at the launch of an integrated online portal that allows for the filing of sexual harassment complaints. The portal not only includes the HC's ICC, but also integrates the ICCs for the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) and the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD). 'The existing ICC of the HC primarily handles complaints against the staff and maybe sometimes against any other person. However, in the working of ICC, we realised there is a big gap that needs to be filled, and that's when we requested the DHCBA and the BCD… and now both have ICCs,' Justice Singh said. 'A collection of data would show that in the last 10 years, 17 complaints have been entertained by the Delhi HC ICC. In (Delhi's) district courts' ICC, there have been about 20-30 complaints… but it doesn't mean there are only that many complaints. There may have been many other women who have not been able to file complaints in a confidential manner. During our experience in the Delhi HC ICC, we realise there is a hesitation among women to physically go and file complaints, which this portal intends to solve,' she added. Sharing patterns of the complaints received by Delhi HC's ICCs, Justice Singh further said, 'One of the biggest things we realised during ICC proceedings was that most of the complaints arise out of misunderstanding or a lack of sensitivity of the terminologies that can be used towards colleagues. Sometimes men or women may use language which may not be acceptable, but they don't know it is not acceptable language. So, sensitisation is one of the best ways this can be (remedied)… Most of the time, it is onlya misunderstanding…' 'The other challenge we faced was the quantum of time ICC had to spend on each of these complaints… Some of the challenges I personally felt… there is a huge amount of time that sitting judges has to spend on ICC complaints as trials take a long time, a large number of staff against whom complaints are filed are governed by CCS (CCA) Rules [Central Civil Services (Classification, Control & Appeal) Rules], and inquiries can be long drawn. We don't know how to solve this problem… we need to find a solution…' 'So, there was a need felt that we should have our own guidelines, which can also be adopted by DHCBA and BCD… A sub-committee was formed to draft those guidelines and they have been finalised,' she added. Delhi HC Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya on Thursday said he has approved the guidelines and the same are expected to be made public soon. Batting for mediation to also be made a part of the initiatives taken to deal with sexual harassment complaints, Justice Singh said, '…a lot of ego issues which colleagues may have with each other… which may have converted into sexual harassment complaints… can get sorted.' Expanding on the ambit of sexual harassment complaints, she added, '…While we are focusing on women filing sexual harassment complaints, the other experience was, several men who face these complaints face it wrongfully… If we don't find anything in the complaint at the preliminary stage itself, we close several complaints… and there could be various extraneous conditions as well, which can lead to the filing of such complaints. The ICC is very conscious while dealing with such complaints… Some complaints are genuine and some are not, and I feel sexual harassment need not be constrained to women complainants but could also be extended to men and all persons with different sexual orientations, so there may be a need for change in the legislation over here.' Justice Kotiswar Singh from the Supreme Court, who was present at the event, said, 'While the POSH Act (Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013) has been understood in most jurisdictions, yet the number of cases being handled varies from HC to HC. Even in SC – I won't go into details as some sensitive cases are being handled – but what I found was that this is particularly confined to the lawyers' community.' 'So, it is a big responsibility of the Delhi Bar Council and Association to see that the redressal mechanism is properly put in place and the mechanism is indeed functional… We also need to sensitise people that certain acts are prohibited, cannot be tolerated… and it is not an easy process,' he added.

DM pulls up officials over delayed vehicle inspection centre project

Kanpur: District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh, on Thursday conducted a surprise inspection of the long-delayed Inspection and Certification (I&C) Centre project under the Transport Department and expressed strong displeasure over the gross negligence exhibited by the executing agency. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Taking serious note of the delay and the poor implementation, the DM directed the Transport Department to identify the officers responsible and submit a report fixing accountability. He further asked the department to recommend strict action to the government against those found guilty of dereliction of duty. Singh also issued stern instructions to the working agency to set a definitive timeline for the remaining construction and ensure early completion of the project. Currently, vehicle inspection and certification is being done temporarily at a facility in Panki. The I&C project, sanctioned in 2018 with a budget of Rs 8.39 crore, has already seen an expenditure of Rs 6 crore but remains incomplete. It is one of the oldest pending projects in the district and is under active review on the Chief Minister's dashboard. During the inspection, it was found that an unnecessary training centre had been proposed in the middle of the project, which later had to be scrapped. The original Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared by the Uttar Pradesh Nirman and Shramik Seva (UPNSS), now UPARNSS. However, the DPR was riddled with technical flaws, largely due to inadequate departmental coordination. Alarmingly, the agency that drafted the DPR is now seeking technical inputs from other departments—an obligation that originally fell within its own scope. The DM directed officials to immediately resolve administrative and technical bottlenecks by coordinating with the Principal Secretary of the Transport Department and other concerned authorities. He emphasized that operationalising the project would mark a significant step toward establishing a transparent and efficient vehicle inspection and certification system in the city, ultimately benefiting the general public.

17 arrests, 11 FIRs daily: Haryana drug fight hits new high

Chandigarh: With an average of 17 arrests and 11 FIRs daily in the first six months of the year, Haryana's drug fight is at a new high. From Jan to June, police registered 1,858 FIRs under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, a 10.81% increase compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB). Arrests also climbed nearly 28%, with 3,051 people taken into custody. Drug seizures have surged as well. Heroin confiscations rose by 62.28%, cocaine by 93.15%, and MDMA by 86.21%. Meanwhile, seizures of tablets, opium mixer camper, opium plants, and injections have seen declines. The data also showed a 28.75% increase in serious drug-related cases compared to the same period last year. Arrests of suspects from outside Haryana increased by 34.5%, highlighting efforts to dismantle interstate smuggling networks. Cases involving multiple accused also nearly doubled, from 471 last year to 850 this year. O P Singh, DGP, HSNCB, informed that what stands out this year is the state's sharper focus on large-scale cases. "In 2025 so far, Haryana registered 233 commercial quantity cases, up from 166 last year —a nearly 29% jump. These cases involved larger amounts of drugs, often linked to organised networks. We are now working with a "top-down and bottom-up" approach — trying to track both the street-level suppliers and the big players behind the scenes, including financiers and logistics operators," Singh said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Investire è più facile che mai BG SAXO Scopri di più Undo Preventive detentions under the PIT-NDPS Act rose from 8 to 39 this year, and property seizures linked to drug profits have grown to Rs 87.19 lakh from Rs 23.40 lakh last year.
