England forced into captaincy change after Nat Sciver-Brunt injury

Independent2 days ago
Nat Sciver-Brunt is an injury doubt for the remainder of England 's white-ball series against India with a groin injury.
Sciver-Brunt was unable to field for large parts of the second T20 international at Bristol after suffering the problem, and will definitely miss the third match at The Oval on Friday.
Experienced batter Tammy Beaumont will stand in as skipper for the game with Sciver-Brunt facing further scans to assess the severity of the problem and determine if she will miss any further games. Maia Bouchier, in good form domestically for Hampshire, has been called up as batting cover.
England have to win the three remaining games to take the T20I series, with three one-day internationals following swiftly afterwards.
'England Women's captain Nat Sciver-Brunt will miss the third Vitality IT20 against India Women at the Kia Oval with a left groin injury,' a statement confirmed.
'Results of the scan will determine whether Sciver-Brunt is required to miss any more games in the series, with the fourth Vitality IT20 due to take place on Wednesday 9 July at Emirates Old Trafford.'
Any potential absence for Sciver-Brunt would be a major headache for Charlotte Edwards, who has endured a difficult week after a clean sweep against the West Indies in her first series as head coach.
The all-rounder, who has been unable to bowl this summer, was installed as the replacement for Heather Knight after a disastrous Ashes whitewash and is primed to lead England to the World Cup in India this autumn. England struggled to execute their plans with the ball and in the field as India took a 2-0 advantage with victory at Bristol on Tuesday.
A hamstring injury has already left Knight facing a race against time to be fit for the World Cup. Her injury opened the door for Beaumont, an opener in 50-over and Test cricket, to return to the T20I side in a new middle-order role, and the 34-year-old will now lead the side in London on Friday night.
England have been using a flexible group of vice-captains to support Sciver-Brunt this summer rather than a single vice-captain as they bid to develop more leadership depth.

Emma Raducanu latest star to question automated Wimbledon line calling

Emma Raducanu has urged Wimbledon to improve electronic line calling after saying she was disappointed by the technology during her defeat against Aryna Sabalenka. A fully automated system has replaced human line judges – whose calls could be challenged using electronic reviews – for the first time at the Championships this year. The two most vocal critics so far have been Britain's leading players, with Raducanu going even further than Jack Draper after feeling one call in particular, when a Sabalenka shot was ruled to have clipped the line, was wrong. 'That call was for sure out,' said Raducanu after her intense 7-6 (6) 6-4 defeat by the world number one. 'It's kind of disappointing, the tournament here, that the calls can be so wrong, but for the most part they've been OK. I've had a few in my other matches, too, that have been very wrong. Hopefully they can fix that.' The technology has become standard across the tour, with all ATP Tour events and a lot of WTA ones no longer using line judges. The same system operates at the Australian Open and the US Open but the French Open remains an outlier, so far eschewing any form of electronic system. Draper queried one serve from Marin Cilic during his second-round loss on Thursday, and he said: 'I don't think it's 100 per cent accurate, in all honesty. A couple of the ones today it showed a mark on the court. There's no way the chalk would have showed.'

Hyett relishing chance to show what England can do

The two sides face off against one another in the opening round of fixtures of the 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly, South Wales. It is the second edition of the U20 tournament, which debuted in Italy last year, when England won two of their three matches. Twenty-year-old centre Hyett, who tasted Premiership Women's Rugby glory with Gloucester Hartpury earlier this year, is keen for England to focus on their own game and let everything else take care of itself. 'I'm excited for [the Scotland game] and I think it'll be a really good battle,' said Worcester native Hyett. 'We know they're going to be physical and turn up on the day, but it's just about playing our game and doing what we're good at. 'It's a really good chance for this U20 group to showcase what they can do. We've been working really hard this past six or seven months and it's exciting to show what we're about on the pitch.' Following on from the 2024 Women's Summer Series, 14 players across the six countries went on to achieve senior honours during the 2025 Guinness Women's Six Nations, including England's Lilli Ives Campion. And Hyett, who took up rugby aged four after growing up with three brothers who all played the sport, highlighted the importance of the Women's Summer Series for giving players the opportunity to stand out and to use it as a springboard to break into the senior team. 'In the top bracket of the older year of U20s, it's a good step and good time to prepare yourself for senior rugby, whether that's for PWR or the Red Roses. It's everyone's dream to play for the Red Roses,' she added. 'Senior coaches are watching this, and we've already seen players like Millie David, Sarah Parry and Lilli too kick on, so it's great that progression is there.' With women's rugby on an upward trajectory, the 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series is a big chance for stars of the future to gain vital international experience, graduate along the development pathway, while also inspiring a new generation of rugby fans. Spread across three dates during July, England will also face Italy on 11 July before rounding off their campaign against France six days later. Julie Paterson, Chief of Rugby at Six Nations Rugby, added: 'The Women's Summer Series is an essential part of the strategy and commitment of Six Nations Rugby, and the six unions and federations, to proactively support the creation and growth of opportunities in the women's game.'
