Monojit Mishra, prime accused in the gangrape of a student at South Calcutta Law College, along with his accomplices spent considerable time drinking liquor inside the institute's guard room after committing the crime on June 25, before heading out for the night, an investigating officer said on Saturday.
According to the police, the trio the other two being Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed then went to a dhaba on EM Bypass for dinner before returning to their respective homes the next morning.
"After committing the crime, the three consumed alcohol in the guard's room and then asked security guard Pinaki Banerjee to keep his mouth shut about the incident," the officer added.
Investigation revealed that a day after the crime on June 26, Monojit, realising the gravity of the situation, contacted an "influential" person in Deshapriya Park, South Kolkata, who had previously helped him. However, sensing the 'mood' of the situation, the person advised Monojit to back off, police said.
The prime accused then sought help from his "mentors" to find an escape route, the officer said.
"Monojit went to various parts of the city including Rashbehari, Deshapriya Park, Gariahat, Fern Road, and Ballygunge Station Road, trying to meet his mentors. Mobile tower data also indicated that he visited someone near Karaya police station," the officer added.
The probe also revealed that Monojit and the other two had planned the entire matter long ago, the officer claimed.
Call Detail Records (CDR) showed multiple conversations among the three in the days leading up to the June 25 incident, the officer added.

‘Team MM' used CCTV cams, meant for security, to blackmail students, teachers

1 2 3 Kolkata: Monojit Mishra, accused of raping a first-year student at a law college on June 25, could reportedly access on his phone footage from all CCTV cameras on the campus. He would scan the footage to identify the content that had potential for blackmail and used them to his advantage. Mishra would not only target students but also teachers, who dared to question his action. "As Mishra had access to college CCTV footage, he would scan them and identify students vulnerable to blackmail. His main motive was to extort money. Sometimes he and his gang threatened girls that they would make those footage public," a student said. Around two weeks ago, on two separate instances, two girls at the college were caught on CCTV cameras in intimate positions with their boyfriends. The boys were from other colleges. A student said, "The two girls were from first year. They had called their boyfriends and gone up to the sixth floor of the building to spend some time together. 'Team MM' got hold of those footage." When other students protested on the WhatsApp group against this "moral policing", Mishra's gang threatened them at his behest. The students said the administrators of the WhatsApp group were Mishra and his two female associates—a second-year student, "appointed as the general secretary" by Mishra, and her friend. "The videos from the CCTV cameras were edited separately. The two girls were identified. They were told that unless they paid a fine of Rs 2,000 each the CCTV footage would be sent to their parents," said a student. When some protested on the WhatsApp group against this 'moral policing', pointing at the regular presence of outsiders on the campus, the two female aides reportedly issued threats. "One girl said if anything had happened that day, the college would have been tagged as the 'place of occurrence' and it would have maligned the institute's name. The other girl said they would decide on the 'next course of action'. If the matter escalates, the consequences will not be good, she told us," a student said. Mishra reportedly called the girls to the union room and lectured them on the college's reputation. His two female associates insulted the girls and gave a 'blanket instruction' to all not to access the sixth floor "without their permission". A first-year student said, "The irony is that on the WhatsApp chat, the 'MM group' would often say the college was not a 'barowari' place. After the rape on June 25, the truth about who had free access was exposed." Talking about his clout, a college official said Mishra used the CCTV footage to blackmail even teachers. "If a teacher spoke against Mishra's activities, he would scan CCTV footage of that teacher and then blackmail the person for say, coming in late for a few days. The CCTV, which was installed for the security of the campus, turned out to be a weapon for Mishra who used it to terrorise people," the official said.

Kolkata gangrape horror: Monojit Mishra, other accused consumed alcohol inside law college after crime, say cops

Days after the gangrape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College, Kolkata Police on Saturday said the prime accused, Monojit Mishra, along with his accomplices, spent considerable time drinking liquor inside the institute's guard room after committing the crime, reported PTI. The report added that Monojit, Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed went to a dhaba on EM Bypass for dinner before returning to their respective homes the next morning. "After committing the crime, the three consumed alcohol in the guard's room and then asked security guard Pinaki Banerjee to keep his mouth shut about the incident," PTI quoted an investigating officer as saying. Details say that with the probe taking shape, realising the gravity of the situation, Monojit contacted an 'influential' person in South Kolkata's Deshapriya Park, a day after the crime on 26 June. The officer claimed that the "influential" person had helped him earlier, but the person advised Monojit to back off. Following this, Monojit sought help from his "mentors" to find an escape route, said the officer. "Monojit went to various parts of the city including Rashbehari, Deshapriya Park, Gariahat, Fern Road, and Ballygunge Station Road, trying to meet his mentors. Mobile tower data also indicated that he visited someone near Karaya police station," the officer added. The officer claimed that the probe also revealed that Monojit and the other two had planned the entire matter long ago. The officer added that multiple conversations among the three occurred in the days leading up to the 25 June incident, according to the Call Detail Records (CDR). Now, two female students have now come forward, describing a disturbing pattern of inappropriate behaviour, intimidation, and physical abuse linked to Monojit Mishra — a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) leader with alleged ties to senior political figures in Mamata Banerjee-led TMC. One of the students, a second-year woman, recalled an incident from October 2023 during a college picnic in Budge Budge. She alleged that former TMC youth wing leader Monojit Mishra inappropriately touched one of her batch-mates inside a room. Later that day, she claimed he similarly assaulted a senior woman student inside an auto-rickshaw, according to Telegraph report. She further alleged that Monojit Mishra had repeatedly asked several women students to visit his flat — where he lived alone — under various pretences. According to Kolkata Police officials, Monojit Mishra has at least eleven criminal cases registered against him with Kolkata Police.
