Patna:
Rashtriya Janata Dal
(RJD) chief
Lalu Prasad
on Saturday announced that a party-led survey is underway to identify "suitable candidates" for the upcoming
Bihar assembly elections
, adding that the final selection would be made in consultation with his son and party's chief ministerial face,
Tejashwi Prasad Yadav
.
"A survey is underway to pick candidates from among you. I will take the final decision after consulting Tejashwi," Lalu told RJD workers while addressing a meeting of the party's national council meeting here. The gathering ratified Lalu's election as RJD president for the 13th consecutive term since the party's inception in 1997.
The announcement comes as Tejashwi has repeatedly urged ticket aspirants to avoid lobbying at party offices.
"Everyone has the right to stake a claim for a ticket, but stop doing 'Ganesh Parikrama' (sycophantic rounds). Those who wish to contest must instead do 'Janata Ka Parikrama' — go to the people, understand their concerns," he said.
Lalu, in his speech, thanked the party cadre for their consistent support and called on them to work with dedication to entrust a "bigger responsibility" to Tejashwi. He urged party workers to intensify outreach in villages and educate people about the govt's policies, alleging that the BJP was acting against the interests of the poor.

He stressed that only loyal and committed workers would be considered for election tickets.
Despite health concerns, Lalu said he remains actively involved in party affairs. "Every evening, I ask Tejashwi about the day's developments. I won't bow to any pressure," he added.
In his address, Tejashwi took a combative stance against the Centre, directly accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of misusing public funds for electoral gains. "Each visit by the PM costs the exchequer Rs 100 crore. What is shocking is that the world's richest political party is using public money from one of India's poorest states, Bihar, to launch its poll campaign and target the Lalu family — instead of granting special status to the state," he alleged.
While Lalu and Tejashwi's speeches energised the party base, the tone remained focused on building momentum ahead of the 2025 assembly elections with calls for discipline, groundwork and solidarity.

Karnataka high court orders notice on Tejasvi Surya's plea seeking release of Bengaluru Metro fare report

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Monday ordered notice to the Central and state govts, as well as the Bangalore Metro Railway Corporation Limited (BMRCL), in response to a petition filed by LS Tejasvi Surya , BJP MP for the Bengaluru South constituency. The petitioner sought a direction to BMRCL to immediately publish or release the report of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) headed by Justice (retd) R Tharani. Counsel for the petitioner submitted that three representations were given seeking the release of the report in Dec 2024. Pursuant to this, BMRCL came up with a revised fare. "The media have filed queries under the Right to Information Act. However, BMRCL has refused to reveal the report," counsel added. "You (petitioner) are so powerful and can't make BMRCL release this report?" Justice S Sunil Dutt Yadav remarked in a lighter vein before adjourning the hearing. Surya's counsel responded by saying that the petitioner himself met the BMRCL managing director and was told they need approval. Govt PU colleges face power cuts; told to pay bills despite free supply order

Koppal: The issue of unannounced power cuts in govt educational institutions has emerged as a significant concern. Despite govt directives for complimentary electricity supply to primary, high schools, and PU colleges, the energy department has unexpectedly approached educational heads demanding payment for pending bills. Gescom authorities have threatened to cut power supply to institutions that have not cleared their dues. After the launch of Gruha Jyoti yojana, teachers' groups advocated for complimentary electricity and water supply for educational institutions. On Nov 1, 2023, CM Siddaramaiah announced free utilities for all govt schools and PU colleges statewide. An official order followed on Dec 15, 2023. The initiative to provide complimentary utilities to govt educational institutions across the state could improve educational standards and increase student numbers, while preserving the maintenance funds in govt schools. The govt has issued clear instructions for provision of free utilities to all state-run educational institutions from 2024-25. The directive required the energy and urban development departments to submit annual grant proposals to the finance department for necessary funding. However, disregarding these instructions, the energy department continues to pressurise educational institutions for bill payments. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 노안+백내장 안보이는 답답함! 더는 방치 하지 마세요! 부산백내장노안 전문안과 더 알아보기 Undo Explicit instructions have been given to electricity providers to cease billing educational institutions. Companies are not authorised to collect payments under any circumstances. A senior official confirmed that additional guidelines would be issued shortly. K Nagesh and Chandrashekar Nuggali, president and general secretary of the Karnataka State Primary School Teachers' Association, requested the govt to implement free electricity retrospectively from Nov 1, 2023. They stressed that educational heads should not face payment pressures, and Escoms should cease disconnection threats. Koppal district houses 41 govt PU colleges, with many having received Gescom payment notices. Pani Rajesh, Gescom EE for Koppal zone, clarified that the notice in question relates to dues accumulated before the govt order that mandates free electricity. "However, every govt PU college that has registered with the District Information System for Education (DISE) code is entitled to free electricity," he stated.

Peacetime is nothing but ‘illusion', must remain prepared for uncertainty: Rajnath Singh

Defence minister Rajnath Singh at the Controllers Conference of the Defence Accounts Department in New Delhi on Monday NEW DELHI: Hailing the armed forces for the valour they displayed during Operation Sindoor post the Pahalgam terror attack , defence minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday that 'peace time is an illusion and India must remain prepared for any uncertainty'. The defence minister praised the armed forces for Operation Sindoor but said the larger geopolitical situation leaves no scope for complacency in the effort to enhance preparedness. 'A single delay or error in financial processes can directly affect operational preparedness,' said the minister while addressing the Controllers Conference of the Defence Accounts Department (DAD). Talking about rising demand for desi weapons of late, Rajnath said, 'The world is looking at our defence sector with new respect. Operation Sindoor has boosted global demand for our indigenous armaments. Most of the equipment we once imported is now being made in India. Our reforms are succeeding because of the clarity of vision and commitment at the highest level. Sudden developments can force a complete shift in our financial and operational posture. ' The minister spoke in the presence of Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Tripathi, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh and defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at the conference. The govt has over the past few years allowed the armed forces to procure arms and ammunition through the 'emergency' route. Post-Operation Sindoor, it cleared a range of acquisitions for the armed forces. The armed forces have consistently complained, often publicly, about acquisitions being delayed because of the rigid approach of the bureaucracy and auditors. Rajnath called on DAD to evolve from a 'controller' to a 'facilitator' in sync with increasing participation of the private sector in defence. He praised DAD's new motto 'Alert, Agile, Adaptive' and noted that these are not mere words, but a reflection of the work culture required in today's rapidly evolving defence environment. 'Whether it's stepping up equipment production or adapting financial processes, we must be ready with innovative techniques and responsive systems at all times,' the minister said. Citing the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute report, which said global military expenditure reached $2.7 trillion in 2024, Rajnath said, 'This opens up tremendous opportunities for India's indigenous defence industries.' The minister also said that gone were the days when expenditure in the defence sector was only considered necessary and never viewed as an economic catalyst. 'Now, it is being seen as a spending which has a multiplier impact on the economy,' he said. 'Earlier, there was no assessment of the economic impact of expenditure on security but things have changed now when investment in re-armament is rising exponentially. We need to pay special attention to defence economics,' he said. Singh said India, along with the rest of the world, is entering a new phase of re-armament, marked by capital-intensive investments in the defence sector. He called upon DAD to incorporate defence economics in their planning and assessments, including social impact analysis of R&D projects and dual-use technologies. Highlighting the increasing strategic and economic significance of the defence sector, Rajnath called for a shift in perception from defence spending as mere expenditure to an economic investment with multiplier impact. 'Until recently, defence budgets were not seen as part of the national economy. Today, they are growth drivers,' he said.
