GRS to team up with PH for state polls: Hajiji
Published on: Sun, Jul 27, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will contest the upcoming state election in alliance with Pakatan Harapan (PH), said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hajiji said the GRS and PH partnership, formed in the aftermath of the failed political coup attempt in January 2023, will remain a genuine and lasting collaboration. He said, in his keynote speech at the Gagasan Rakyat Sabah Annual General Assembly on Sunday, that PH Sabah's strong support during the 'Langkah Kinabalu' episode helped GRS maintain stability, allowing the state government to continue its administration until today. Hajiji, who is also Gagasan Rakyat President and GRS Chairman, added that the cooperation has brought tangible progress to Sabah and must be preserved for the continued benefit of the people. He also acknowledged PH Sabah leaders for their trust and support. Hajiji described GRS as a strong local coalition aligned with the aspirations of Sabahans who want to see local parties leading the state's political direction. He also praised component parties such as PBS, Star, SAPP, Usno, PHRS, LDP, and PCS for their unity and contributions in strengthening GRS as the largest local alliance in Sabah. Masiung rejects PM's proposal for GRS-BN-PH alliance

TONGOD (Aug 4): Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) vice president Datuk Masiung Banah has rejected Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's proposal for Barisan Nasional (BN) to form a tripartite alliance with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) ahead of the 17th State Election. 'Such an understanding is unlikely to materialize as it would confuse voters. Moreover, GRS and PH have already agreed to continue their political cooperation,' Masiung said in response to the Prime Minister's suggestion made yesterday. He added that if a three-party alliance were to take shape, Gagasan Rakyat would stand by Anwar's earlier statement made in Tawau on May 11, where the Prime Minister expressed support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor to lead the seat negotiation process. During a special meeting with Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leaders in Kota Kinabalu yesterday, Anwar had expressed his intention to mediate negotiations between GRS, BN and PH to avoid three-cornered contests in the upcoming state election. However, Masiung firmly dismissed the idea, describing it as a political 'love triangle' that Gagasan Rakyat — the backbone of GRS — would not support. He emphasized that GRS and PH Sabah already have a solid foundation of political cooperation, particularly in the administration of the state government. 'GRS has lost trust in BN/Umno due to their betrayal during the 'Langkah Kinabalu' episode,' he said, referring to the political manoeuvre he claimed was orchestrated by BN/Umno to undermine the ruling coalition. Masiung pointed out that since the episode, BN/Umno leaders have continuously acted with hostility toward GRS, employing various tactics to destabilize the alliance. 'At the same time, Umno/BN Sabah has also declared that it will no longer work with GRS,' he noted. He urged the Prime Minister to respect GRS's position and honour his earlier commitment to allow GRS chairman Hajiji Noor to lead the seat negotiations among aligned parties ahead of the state polls.

Nizam slams Shafie's 'old promises in new packaging'
Nizam KOTA KINABALU (Aug 4): Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, has cautioned Sabahans — especially the youth — not to be swayed by what he described as 'old promises in new packaging' ahead of the upcoming state election. Responding to Parti Warisan President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal's recent pledge to abolish student loans such as PTPTN and Yayasan Sabah funding while offering full scholarships to Sabahan students, Nizam said the proposals amounted to 'political theatre recycled for election season.' 'The people of Sabah are not forgetful. We are not easily swayed by recycled promises beautifully wrapped in campaign rhetoric,' Nizam said in a statement today. He questioned Shafie's commitment to education during his tenure as Chief Minister from 2018 to 2020, pointing out that no loan cancellations, new bursaries, or special education funds were introduced at the time. In contrast, Nizam said the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has focused on delivering tangible results, citing several key initiatives: Higher Education Registration Assistance Fund for B40 students, Sabah Maju Jaya Scholarship to expand higher education access, increased allocations to Yayasan Sabah for scholarships and aid, redevelopment of dilapidated rural schools, and special assistance for Sabahan students studying out of state.

Over 60,000 union members in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 4): A total of 60,764 workers in Sabah are members of registered trade unions, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said that the figure includes 22,317 employees from the government sector, 35,194 from the private sector, and 3,253 workers from statutory bodies. He added that there are currently 92 registered trade unions in Sabah, overseen by the Sabah Trade Union Affairs Department. These include 23 unions from the government sector, 52 from the private sector, and 16 representing statutory bodies. 'Sabah recorded a workforce of over 1.7 million people last year, and their collective contribution has driven the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) up to RM84.3 billion,' he said. 'This growth has significantly boosted GDP, particularly in critical sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining and quarrying, and services,' he added, in his speech at the Sabah state-level Labour Day celebration, held here today. Also present at the event were Human Resources Minister, Steven Sim; Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) president, Datuk Dr Adnan Mat; and Trade Union Affairs Department (JHEKS) director-general, Mohd Asri Abdul Wahab. Hajiji said that, in line with the era of globalisation and rapid technological advancement, he urged trade unions in the state to be more proactive in safeguarding the welfare of their members, through initiatives and programmes implemented at both federal and state levels. 'The role of trade unions is crucial as a key pillar in upholding social justice, and ensuring that every worker receives not only fair wages, but also access to skills development, workplace safety and health, comprehensive social security, and a conducive and prosperous working environment. He added that the Sabah government welcomes trade unions as strategic partners, and remains committed to empowering the workforce, supporting the trade union movement, and safeguarding workers' welfare. 'I believe Sabah can be a model state in Malaysia, in building an employment ecosystem which not only drives economic strength, but also consistently upholds the rights of workers,' he said. He also advised union leaders in Sabah who will be participating in the National-Level Trade Union Assembly in Penang on September 6 to use the opportunity to bring the voices of Sabah's workers to the national stage.
