Inside Gulf Oil India's EV Push, R&D Drive and Future Roadmap

Time of India25-06-2025
In a candid and wide-ranging conversation, Mr. Ravi Chawla, Managing Director of Gulf Oil Lubricants India, provided valuable insights into the company's evolving strategy. The discussion delved into Gulf Oil's initiatives in the electric mobility space, innovations in lubricants, strategic partnerships with OEMs, and the company's future growth prospects in India.

Below is a comprehensive overview of the key takeaways from the interaction.
Adapting to the EV Era
Gulf Oil India is firmly pivoting toward electric mobility. What started as a traditional lubricant player is now transforming into a comprehensive solutions provider for EVs. The representative explained that while conventional engine oil is becoming obsolete in EVs, a significant portion of fluids — including transmission oils, coolants, greases, and brake fluids - remains essential.
Gulf has already started supplying EV-specific fluids to several electric three-wheeler and component manufacturers.
Interestingly, the company is not just limiting itself to lubricants. Gulf has entered the EV charger space, supplying AC chargers (3.3kW units) to OEMs like MG Motor India. These chargers will be bundled with EVs and reach customers directly. The company is also actively engaging with other OEMs such as Tata Motors and Hyundai, signaling broader ambitions in the growing EV infrastructure domain.
OEM Collaborations and Future Plans
Gulf currently has partnerships with over 40 OEMs across segments, especially in two-wheelers and diesel engine oils. Their collaborations span products like lubricants, AdBlue for diesel vehicles, and now EV fluids and chargers. The representative hinted at an upcoming major tie-up with a global carmaker, which could further boost Gulf's presence in the passenger vehicle space.

Although Gulf does not yet have major OEM tie-ups in the passenger car motor oil (PCMO) segment, it has an ongoing supply arrangement with Kia's service centers and previously supplied fluids to Tata Motors. Plans are in motion to increase footprint in this area, which currently contributes less than 5% to their market share — signaling a significant growth opportunity.
R&D and Innovation Hub in India
India serves as the primary R\&D base for Gulf's global operations in the automotive and industrial segments.
The company conducts 90-95% of its research activities here, with additional support from international centers in the Middle East, Latin America, and Singapore. Gulf has historically led the industry with innovations such as India's first long-drain engine oil for commercial vehicles, increasing oil change intervals from 36,000 km to 80,000 km. The company also developed tractor oils with extended service intervals, and motorcycle oils that last up to 10,000 km — a rarity in the segment.
These innovations reflect Gulf's brand focus on endurance and efficiency.
Market Performance and Growth Strategy
Gulf Oil India is outpacing the market with 2–3X growth in most segments. While the overall lubricant market grows at 3–4% annually, Gulf is aiming for 5–16% growth in passenger car lubricants, and 3X market growth in industrial and B2B categories.
Key pillars of this growth strategy include:
* Strengthening OEM alliances in the electric mobility space
* Expanding R&D capabilities and accelerating innovation
* Growing market share in under-represented segments like passenger car oils
* Deepening its presence in premium product categories
* Supporting the shift toward sustainable and long-drain lubricant solutions
Surprisingly, Gulf also has a small but growing two-wheeler battery business, though its market share currently stands at just 3%.
The expansion began as an extension of Gulf's retail lubricant outlets, which also started selling batteries. However, the company clarified that it has no immediate plans to enter the four-wheeler or commercial vehicle battery segment, citing infrastructure and distribution differences.
Branding efforts have also seen a shift. While Gulf was historically associated with commercial vehicles, the company is now aggressively promoting its two-wheeler products through brand ambassadors like MS Dhoni, Smriti Mandhana, and Hardik, targeting different segments such as scooters, motorcycles, and SUVs.
Participation in events like India Bike Week (IBW) reflects the company's growing focus on premium and synthetic oils for performance-conscious consumers.
Global Standing and Exports
In the global Gulf Oil network, India plays a leading role in automotive and industrial lubricants, even though other segments like marine oils may be larger by volume. The Indian arm exports about 5% of its total output to over 25 countries, including regions in Latin America and neighboring Asian countries.
Motorsports & Premium Aspirations
Gulf's iconic motorsport legacy isn't just confined to international racing circuits like Formula One. In India, the company is exploring expanding its presence in motorsport partnerships, particularly in two-wheeler and adventure biking communities, as part of its strategy to premiumize and digitally transform its brand.
The Road Ahead
Gulf Oil India's future lies in agile adaptation and category expansion.
From launching cutting-edge EV fluids to pushing into high-growth segments like PCMO and industrial lubricants, the company aims to leapfrog competitors through a combination of innovation, strategic partnerships, and strong customer trust.
With a robust R\&D ecosystem, deep OEM relationships, and a clear roadmap for the future, Gulf is not just responding to market shifts — it's actively shaping them. As electric mobility accelerates, Gulf Oil India appears well-positioned to lead the charge.
Also with its bold ambition, expanding portfolio, and robust OEM network, Gulf Oil India is not just keeping pace with the evolving automotive landscape — it's actively shaping it.

After Tesla's desi debut, Vietnamese EV maker VinFast opens first showroom in India

Vietnamese EV manufacturer VinFast has opened its first showroom in India, located in Surat, Gujarat, ahead of the launch of its upcoming manufacturing plant, days after Tesla made its desi debut. Located in Piplod in Surat and spread out on 3,000 the facility will offer product experiences, vehicle purchase journeys, and after-sales support. The Showroom will showcase VinFast's upcoming range of premium electric SUVs - VF 6 and VF 7. India is also the first market where VinFast is launching the right-hand drive version of the VF 7 and VF 6. As part of its ambitious roadmap, the company aims to launch 35 dealerships by year-end, across 27 plus cities, the company said in a officially opened pre-bookings for its premium electric SUVs, the VF 6 and VF 7 on July 15, can now book their preferred VinFast premium electric SUV either at the exclusive showrooms or through the official website, with a fully refundable booking amount of Rs 21,000. The vehicles will be locally assembled at VinFast's upcoming factory in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, reinforcing the company's long-term commitment to India as a strategic market and future hub for electric vehicle Sanh Chau, CEO, VinFast Asia, said, "The first VinFast Showroom in Surat, Gujarat is a symbol of our deep commitment to India. We are excited to bring the VinFast experience closer to Indian consumers. With this dealership in Gujarat, we aim to offer not just electric vehicles, but a complete ownership journey built on quality, trust, and service excellence."VinFast has entered the Indian market at a time when both local and global players are already establishing their presence, yet significant opportunities remain in this rapidly growing EV market is rapidly growing, with electric passenger vehicle sales rising from just 5,000 units in 2020 to over 113,000 in EVs currently make up less than 3% of total car sales, the central government's ambitious goal to increase this share to 30% by 2030 underscores the sector's tremendous latest player, VinFast, a small and unprofitable EV maker, briefly became the world's third most valuable automaker in 2023, behind Tesla and Toyota, after its Nasdaq debut sent shares soaring nearly 700%. Now, the company plans to open a car assembly plant in India by the end of in 2017, VinFast began making EVs in 2021. It is backed by Vingroup, Vietnam's largest conglomerate. VinFast in January last year signed an agreement with Tamil Nadu to invest as much as $2 billion in the country. Work on the plant started soon after, with an initial investment of $500 loss-making startup had initially planned to focus on America for its foreign sales, but slow progress in the United States, even before growing uncertainty caused by U.S. tariffs, pushed the company to change strategy. VinFast's entry in itself may not be a significant challenge for Tesla in India, but it points at a crowded EV space, which might make it hard for Tesla to cruise into the Indian VinFast, the real challenge begins with rivals like Tesla, which has already made its India debut. Tesla opened its first showroom in Mumbai's upscale Bandra Kurla Complex on July 15. The 4,000-square-foot space will showcase Model Y crossovers imported from China, priced at over $56,000 before taxes—roughly $10,000 more than the U.S. base price, according to Bloomberg.A second showroom is expected to open in New Delhi by the end of July, and Tesla has beefed up local hiring and secured warehousing space. But with no plans to set up a manufacturing plant in the world's third-largest automobile market, Tesla's entry into India is less about racking up immediate sales volume gains and more about gaging demand for its EVs and building up the brand's company has flirted with the idea of establishing a local manufacturing base — something the Indian government has courted and that could sidestep heavy import tariffs — but so far Tesla hasn't committed to doing Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau has said the company doesn't view Tesla or BYD as direct competitors. Still, India's complex market dynamics—shaped by established Indian incumbents, pricing sensitivities, and evolving consumer preferences—present their own set of hurdles. As the EV race picks up pace, only time will reveal how VinFast navigates these challenges and where it ultimately stands.

Tesla updates robotaxi users about chauffeur-style service in California

Tesla sent robotaxi users a new terms-of-service agreement detailing its planned launch in California's Bay Area, Business Insider reported citing a screenshot of the notification sent to users on notification said, "If your ride is taking place in California, it is being conducted with a safety driver using Full Self-Driving (Supervised) pursuant to authority from the California Public Utilities Commission," adding that rides taken outside California are "conducted autonomously," confirming Reuters reporting from a day earlier. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters reported earlier that unlike Alphabet's Waymo unit, Tesla cannot operate its service using autonomous vehicles in the Bay Area because the EV maker does not have the required permits and has not applied according to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). Tesla said the service would use a variant of its supervised Full Self-Driving software , the report said. For the Bay Area service, Tesla may be able to use its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature, which can perform many driving tasks but requires a human driver to pay attention and be ready to take over at all times. This week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on an earnings call that the company was "getting the regulatory permission to launch" robotaxis in several markets, including the San Francisco Bay Area. Tesla told the CPUC on Thursday that it plans to offer rides to "friends and family of employees" and "select members of the public" under a permit the company has that allows a human driver to transport passengers in a "traditional vehicle" for "charter services." Tesla recently met with the agency but has not applied for additional permits that would be needed to collect fares or test without a safety driver, Reuters reported earlier this week. The next step for Tesla would be to apply for a CPUC license for an autonomous vehicle to pick up passengers with a safety driver, according to a review of California's autonomous driving regulations. But companies must first operate a pilot phase, where they cannot charge customers.

Ultraviolette F77 Mach 2, F77 SuperStreet get new Ballistic+ riding mode. What it offers?

Ultraviolette has launched a software update for its high-performance electric bikes. Under this software update, all the Ultraviolette models, including the F77 Mach 2 and F77 SuperStreet electric motorcycles, have received some performance upgrades with a more powerful Ballistic+ riding mode. The new software update comes with a revised throttle map. Paired with the Gen3 powertrain firmwire, the new riding mode promises superior power-packed performance. The electric two-wheeler manufacturer claims that this new riding mode offers a revised throttle map for better torque delivery. The company has stated that owners of the older F77 electric motorcycles can also get the same update for their EVs for free. Also, despite the update, the electric bikes from the OEM come without any change in their pricing. With the Ballistic+ riding mode and a revised throttle map, the overall acceleration of the Ultraviolette EVs has improved. On the Ultraviolette F77 Mach 2, the torque delivery under 30 kmph, which was not very engaging, has been updated. Now the electric bike feels more engaging with a better initial acceleration. Apart from the revamped throttle map, both the F77 electric motorcycles remain unchanged mechanically. The F77 Mach 2 and F77 SuperStreet get the same 7.1 kWh battery pack that offers a claimed range of 211 km on a single charge. Powering both the electric motorcycles is a 30 kW electric motor, promising a top speed of 155 kmph. Ultraviolette has introduced two other products as well, including the Shockwave adventure motorcycle and Tesseract electric scooter. Both these electric vehicles are already open for prebooking via the company's website, while deliveries are slated to commence from early next year. It is not clear if both the Ultraviolette Tesseract and Shockwave electric scooter and motorcycle will come equipped with the new Ballistic+ riding mode or not.
