KUCHING (April 27): The monthly raising of the Sarawak flag, 'Ibu Pertiwi', is a celebration of the state's sovereignty and unity.
The ceremony, usually held on the first Sunday of every month, aims to nurture patriotism and a sense of belonging among locals.
This month's flag-raising ceremony, however, was quite unique as it coincided with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, and participants were seen donning traditional Malay costumes during the event.
The event kicked off with an inspection of the guard-of-honour from the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), followed by the singing of the Sarawak anthem, 'Ibu Pertiwiku'.
It continued with a performance by the music group 'Prodigy', said Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) in a report shared on its Facebook page.
Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Sarawak Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi officiated at the ceremony today.
Meanwhile, Minister in Sarawak Premier's Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai is expected to officiate at the flag-raising ceremony next month.
Among those present yesterday were Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Kuching North Datuk Bandar Dato Hilmy Othman, Sarawak Multimedia Authority general manager Dato Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation chief executive officer Dato Sudartono Osman, and DBKU director Ramzi Abdillah. flag raising ibu pertiwi flag julaihi narawi Kuching North City Commission

Lawsuit seeks to declare BM version of Constitution as authoritative text

Lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla has filed a lawsuit seeking a court declaration that the Malay version of the Federal Constitution is the authoritative text that should prevail over the English version if there is any inconsistency. He cited Article 160B of the Constitution stating that where the Constitution has been translated into Bahasa Malaysia, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong may prescribe it to be the authoritative text.

Ramasamy: What's PMX give-away as Bumi policy stands in the way of Malaysia's US tariff negotiation?

I AM not sure whether Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is as serious as he sounds in defending the preferential policies for the Bumiputera community in the country. The US imposition of 25% tariffs (from 24% previously) on Malaysian exports seems invariably related to the imposition of 30% Bumiputera equity on foreign firms, the nature of the halal industry – and not least – the prevention of foreign equity in the gas and petroleum industry. While Anwar talks tough about not diluting the Bumiputera stake in the country – calling it the 'red lines' – the government at the same time wants to engage the US amicably and diplomatically to reduce tariffs. I was informed by some Malaysian former diplomats that Anwar has the peculiar habit of talking tough and using non-compromising language when addressing the local audience, particularly the Malay segment of the population. To the Malays, he wants to be seen as a champion of their political and economic interests, especially through the manifestation of pro-Bumiputera policies. In other words, Anwar – despite his awareness of what is wrong with some of the Bumiputera policies – is not prepared to confront them or to come up with better national policies that will benefit all segments of the population. It doesn't take rocket science to know that the pro-Bumiputera policies have essentially benefitted the Malay elite as opposed to the man-0n-the-street Malays in the administrative and political sectors. Limited bargaining power By focusing on political expediency and survival, Anwar lacks the courage and wisdom to confront the political, social and economic realities in the country. He is so afraid that any attempt to critically examine the special privileges of the Bumiputera might be construed as a zero-sum game – the loss of the Bumiputera and the gain of the economically vibrant non-Malays in the country. Whether Anwar is going to tamper with the privileges of the Bumiputera must not be judged by his political rhetoric but rather by what Malaysia is going to give away in exchange for reduced tariffs. I would certainly think that there is a serious mismatch between what is said by Anwar and what Malaysia is going to concede to the US in the tariff talks. Anwar should not behave as though he is anti-US – he is far from it. He certainly lacks the courage and determination of twice former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Just remember how Dr Mahathir opposed the IMF (International Monetary Fund) policies during the country's financial crisis in the 1990s. While Anwar was prepared to go along with the dictates of the IMF, Dr Mahathir sought to confront them. It is the same Anwar who now wants to take a tough stand in protecting the rights of Bumiputera but in the on-going tariff negotiations with the US, he might be much more subdued with the potential to negatively affect the country's economy. – July 21, 2025 Former DAP stalwart and Penang chief minister II Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy is chairman of the United Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai) interim council. Sarawak Day: 'Ibu Pertiwi' Elevates Identity Of The Land Of The Hornbills In Malaysia

By Hamdan Ismail KUCHING, July 21 (Bernama) -- A line from the Sarawak state anthem, "Ibu Pertiwiku," is a fitting reminder, especially as the people of the Land of the Hornbills celebrate Sarawak Day tomorrow (July 22). "Sarawak dalam Malaysia, aman makmur rahmat Tuhan maha esa (Sarawak, a part of Malaysia, blessed by God with peace and prosperity)" is a line from the lyrics of the state's anthem, which has been played at every official event held in this Land of the Hornbills since 1988. Out of all the states and territories in this country, "Ibu Pertiwiku" is the only state anthem that contains the word "Malaysia" in its lyrics. This verse is not just an ordinary line of lyrics, but a declaration that reflects Sarawak's unique identity as a state proud of its heritage, yet at the same time, firmly bound within the Federation of Malaysia. It outlines Sarawak's acceptance and commitment to the formation of Malaysia in 1963, while still preserving the agreed-upon sovereignty and autonomy. For National Council of Professors senior fellow Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir, the word 'Malaysia' in the lyrics of the Sarawak state anthem is very significant because it is a clear reflection that the state spirit can unite with a broader national consciousness. According to him, the lyrics show how the leaders and people of this Land of the Hornbills are always fully aware that Sarawak is part of Malaysia and the importance of moving forward together within the context of a federation. "Awareness of the importance of Sarawak moving in tandem within the context of a federation is very important, not only to strengthen unity at the state level, but also the spirit of federalism and unity at the national level," he told Bernama.
