Colorado restaurant wins James Beard award

Axios17-06-2025
Boulder's beloved Frasca Food and Wine took home one of the culinary world's top prizes Monday, a James Beard award for Outstanding Restaurant.
Why it matters: The category is among the James Beard Foundation's highest honors, recognizing restaurants that deliver consistent excellence.
Driving the news: The upscale Italian eatery, led by restaurateur Bobby Stuckey, triumphed against four other restaurants scattered across the country to earn its third James Beard award at the 35th annual ceremony held in Chicago.
The previous two recognized the restaurant's outstanding service and wine program.
What he's saying: Stuckey took the stage and shouted: "Our industry is frickin' beautiful."
Like other winners, he emphasized the importance of immigrants to the restaurant world amid federal raids. "If you are new to this country and don't speak the language, the hospitality industry is here for you," he said from the podium.
The big picture: Two restaurants, four chefs and two bar owners from Colorado were named James Beard finalists. The other finalists from Colorado who didn't win included:
Carolyn Nugent and Alen Ramos, Poulette Bakeshop in Parker, for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker
McLain Hedges and Mary Allison Wright, Yacht Club in Denver for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service
Josh Niernberg, Bin 707 Foodbar in Grand Junction for Outstanding Chef
Alma Fonda Fina in Denver for Best New Restaurant
Penelope Wong, Yuan Wonton for Best Chef: Mountain region
The intrigue: Salvador Alamilla, the chef behind Amano in Caldwell, Idaho, took home the medal for best chef in the mountain region, which includes Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming.
Zoom in: First nominated in 2016, Stuckey and chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson opened Frasca in 2004.
The Boulder restaurant has since collected a variety of national nods, including consecutive Michelin Stars in 2023 and 2024.
The Frasca Hospitality Group operates several Colorado restaurants, including Pizzeria Alberico, which sits next door to Frasca, and Tavernetta and Sunday Vinyl in Denver.

Lamborghini's First Personalized Temerario Glows in Grey and Blue

Lamborghini's shift toward electrified supercars continues with the introduction of the Temerario, the Italian marque's all-new plug-in hybrid coupe. The model represents the brand's departure from the Huracán and its long-serving V10 engine, which has been replaced by a more potent and efficient twin-turbo V8 hybrid setup. With the Temerario, Lamborghini completes its transition to a fully electrified product line alongside the Revuelto and the Urus SE. The latest development comes in the form of the first Temerario Ad Personam – a fully customized one-off model created by Lamborghini's personalization division. Revealed in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, during a private gathering, the build draws inspiration from the Mediterranean backdrop and introduces a tailored visual expression of the new hybrid Lamborghini. Dubbed the Temerario Porto Cervo, this one-off example is defined by a finish called Grigio Serget – a grey base that reveals embedded blue flakes under direct light. Gloss black elements in Nero Noctis outline the lower body, front splitter, rear diffuser, and side scoops. A slim pinstripe in Blu Royal provides a color break across the body, also found on the rear wing. Blue brake calipers hide behind Velador gloss black wheels, and matte black quad tailpipes add contrast at the rear. Inside, the blue-grey theme continues. Grigio Octans leather and Corsa Tex upholstery form the base of the cabin, while Blu Nethuns stitching and leather inserts appear across seat panels and door trims. Embroidery includes Lamborghini logos and a Temerario script with Tricolore detail along the cabin's rear wall. A profile of the car is stitched into the doors, while matte carbon trim and a red-detailed carbon steering wheel reinforce the supercar's driver-oriented purpose. Two plaques mark this unit's uniqueness: one reads Ad Personam on the driver-side B-pillar, the other tagged "Porto Cervo 2025" – to be replaced by the owner's custom plate before delivery. The Temerario is powered by an all-new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine paired with three electric motors. The gasoline engine alone delivers 789 hp with a 10,000 rpm redline. With hybrid assistance, total output reaches 907 hp. Power is routed to all four wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. Lamborghini claims 0–100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 213 mph. The Temerario Porto Cervo is a one-off commission, though Lamborghini's Ad Personam program allows buyers to create similarly bespoke configurations. The standard model's MSRP hovers around $300,000. Production takes place alongside the Revuelto on Lamborghini's new hybrid-capable line in Sant'Agata Bolognese. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Report: Kering in Talks with Qatar to Offload Milan Property

Kering is holding advanced talks with Qatar's royal family to sell a Milan luxury property, Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera said. Kering may sell a majority stake in the company that owns the building it bought in 2024 for €1.3 billion ($1.5 billion), the newspaper reported, without saying where it obtained the information. Kering declined to comment on the report. Qatar Investment Authority wasn't able to comment immediately. In April, it had been reported to be interested though the sovereign wealth fund denied the reports at the time. The French luxury company is working to sell properties in New York, Milan and Paris, it said in July as it announced a 15 percent sales plunge in the second quarter. Kering is beginning a new era with the scheduled arrival in mid-September of Chief Executive Officer Luca de Meo, who previously held the same role at automaker Renault. Francois-Henri Pinault, son of Kering's billionaire founder Francois Pinault, will stay on as chairman after handing over the CEO reins when de Meo arrives. By Tara Patel and Tommaso Ebhardt Learn more: Why Kering Picked a Fashion Outsider to Be Its Next CEO The Gucci and Saint Laurent owner is splitting its chairman and CEO roles, bringing in Luca de Meo, a turnaround expert who has revived multiple automotive brands, to support the Pinault family.

Domo Sushi, lauded chef's Hayes Valley standby, appears to close suddenly

An in-person battle with a social media influencer that went viral was the downfall of three-month-old Kis Cafe in San Francisco's Hayes restaurant announced last week that it would be closing permanently in light of accusations that the chef had been rude to the influencer. Now, the subsequent media backlash may (or may not) spell the doom of another restaurant affiliated with James Beard-nominated Chef Luke Sung. A Reddit thread on Saturday announced the impending closure of Domo Sushi, a cozy sushi restaurant also nestled in Hayes Valley, a block over from Kis Cafe. Sung's LinkedIn lists him as the 'operator' of Domo. The thread began with a user posting a photo of a piece of paper hung in what appears to be Domo's storefront at 511 Laguna St. It reads: 'Domo is closing. Last service 8-2-2025. Thank you for your support for the last 17 years.' 'According to a staff member, the owners, which also owned recently closed Kis Cafe, let all staff know that yesterday today (sic) (8/2) would be their last day, closing after 17 years,' the caption below the photo, posted by a user named 'ieroec,' reads. The Chronicle attempted to reach out to Sung but was not successful. A Domo employee who was contacted Saturday appeared to confirm that a closure was discussed Saturday morning, but also expressed uncertainty about whether that plan was still active by the evening. 'The owners this morning decided not to close yet,' the employee said, but quickly added: 'We don't know, actually.' Domo has yet to provide an update on the status of its operations on its social media accounts, and the note posted in its storefront notably does not include a reason for the potential closure. But Reddit users have theories. 'Seems a bit odd if a restaurant can't survive two weeks of bad social media PR of a different restaurant,' said one user in a comment on the thread. 'I wonder if it has anything to do with commercial real estate lease jumping significantly last year and they weren't able to negotiate the price,' posted another. 'Maybe it's a retirement thing?' wondered a third. Earlier this month, Sung was ousted as chef and co-owner of Kis Cafe after news of his clash with a food 'microinfluencer,' known on Tik Tok by her handle @karlalobb162, at the establishment went viral. The content creator, whose real name is Karla, posted a video in which she alleged that Sung instigated a hostile interaction between the two, after she showed up at the restaurant for a planned promotional collaboration. Sung, she alleged, dismissed her number of followers as insufficient. Sung has since issued a public apology, which was posted to Kis Cafe's Instagram page. 'It was important for me to first apologize to Karla privately and step away from Kis Cafe before publicly apologizing,' Sung wrote, and acknowledged being 'condescending, hurtful, and intimidating' to the influencer during her visit. Public records show that Sung has leased Domo's space at 511 Laguna since 2007, and appears to own the building that housed Kis Cafe through a trust.
