Japanese PM Set to Resign After Election Defeat

Israa Farhan
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is expected to announce his resignation in the coming weeks following a major setback in the country's recent Upper House elections, according to local media reports.
The defeat saw the ruling coalition lose its parliamentary majority, placing Ishiba under intense political pressure.

to the Prime Minister say he plans to step down by the end of next month, having already informed his inner circle of his intention to resign.
The anticipated move comes just hours after Japan and the United States finalised a new trade agreement aimed at reducing tariffs on Japanese automobile imports, while sparing Tokyo from further punitive duties on other goods.
Sunday's Upper House election delivered a serious blow to Ishiba's leadership.
His coalition, led by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its partner Komeito, secured only 122 out of 248 seats, falling short of a majority. In contrast, opposition parties increased their representation to 126 seats, reversing the political balance in the chamber.
This latest defeat follows the coalition's earlier loss of its majority in the Lower House in autumn of last year.
As a result, the government now faces the prospect of negotiating with opposition forces to pass legislation and implement policy, a scenario likely to challenge its effectiveness and agenda.
Ishiba is expected to hold discussions with senior officials of the ruling LDP later today to review the election results and chart the coalition's next steps. While no official announcement has been made, analysts suggest that his resignation is all but certain, signalling a potential shift in Japan's political landscape.

Germany's Merz calls on Israel to provide aid to Gaza's starving population - War on Gaza

Germany's chancellor on Sunday called on Israel's prime minister to quickly provide aid to "starving" Palestinians in Gaza, in a phone call between the two leaders. Chancellor Friedrich Merz "expressed his deep concern about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza," said a government statement. "He called on Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu to do everything in his power to achieve an immediate ceasefire. He urged him to provide the starving civilian population in Gaza with urgently needed humanitarian aid now. This aid must reach the civilian population quickly, safely, and in the required quantities." Israel's war on Gaza -- described as genocide by several prominent genocide scholars and numerous aid organisations -- has killed at least 59,821 Palestinians and injured more than 144,851, the majority of them women and children. The war has been compounded by Israel's blockade on the entry of all humanitarian aid, including food, which has persisted for nearly five months since it was imposed on 2 March. Israeli occupation forces have killed over 1,000 Palestinians attempting to access food aid in Gaza since a US-Israeli so-called humanitarian foundation, began operations in late May, according to the UN. The UN and NGOs on the ground have decried the severe scarcity facing Gaza's 2.4 million people, with shortages of food, clean water, medicine and fuel. More than 100 aid organisations have already warned that "mass starvation" was spreading across the Palestinian territory. Germany, seeking to atone for the Holocaust, has long been one of Israel's most steadfast supporters. It is one of the biggest suppliers of weapons to Israel, providing about 30% of Israel's arms imports between 2019 and 2023, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). It ranks second only to the United States, which accounted for over two-thirds (69%) of all arms sold to Israel from abroad during the same period. Last year, Germany's arms sales to Israel were worth €326.5m ($361m) -- a tenfold increase compared with 2022 -- with the majority of export licences granted after the war on Gaza began in October 2023, according to Germany's federal government. But as the civilian toll and humanitarian crisis in Gaza have worsened, Germany has recently intensified its subtle criticism of its ally. The German government has stated that it regards recognition of a Palestinian state as "one of the final steps on the path to achieving a two-state solution." *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Trump, EU Chief von der Leyen Meet in Scotland

Israa Farhan European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and former US President Donald Trump are set to meet in Scotland on Sunday, just days ahead of a critical deadline for the imposition of new US tariffs on European Union imports. The high-stakes meeting will take place at Trump Turnberry in Scotland, where Trump spent Saturday playing golf. The encounter follows weeks of tense trade negotiations between Brussels and Washington. Trump has previously indicated that there is a 50-50 chance of securing a trade agreement with the EU, expressing conditional openness to delaying or modifying the proposed tariffs. The proposed US tariffs, set at 30 percent on a range of European exports—are scheduled to take effect on August 1. The measures are part of Washington's response to what it claims are persistent trade imbalances with the bloc. However, the former president has left room for negotiation, suggesting the possibility of reducing or waiving the tariffs if the EU agrees to further open its markets to American goods and services. The European Commission has been working intensively to avoid the implementation of higher duties, which would significantly impact key European industries. A spokesperson for von der Leyen stated that the meeting would allow both leaders to assess the current situation and explore a potential balanced outcome that would offer stability and predictability for businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently hinted that a breakthrough in the trade dispute may be imminent. Trump has already struck a separate deal with Japan, agreeing to a 15 percent tariff—far below the rate originally proposed. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language

6 Dead in Temple Stampede in India

Israa Farhan At least six people have died and dozens more were injured following a stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, India, on Sunday morning. The tragedy occurred when panic spread among pilgrims after a high-voltage electric wire reportedly fell onto a temple path. The incident took place around 8:30 a.m. local time, as thousands of worshippers gathered at the hilltop shrine during a peak pilgrimage period. Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the cause, with some officials suggesting that a fallen wire was the cause, while others suspect that a rumor may have triggered the stampede. Authorities confirmed that six individuals lost their lives and over 30 were injured. Police and emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene to carry out relief operations. The injured have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Local officials said the situation is now under control, though the panic led to a devastating loss of life. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state leaders have extended condolences to the families of the victims. Haridwar, located at the foothills of the Himalayas, is one of India's most sacred cities, where pilgrims frequently gather in large numbers, especially during festivals. Deadly stampedes remain a recurring concern across the country, with over 70 fatalities from similar incidents recorded so far this year. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language
