To fill ‘obvious gap' ahead of Bihar polls, Chirag and party attempt Bahujan makeover
In an interview to The Hindu,theparty's Lok Sabha MP and strategist Arun Bharti said that 'Chirag Paswan is a Bahujan leader and LJP (RV) is a Bahujan party'.
On June 29, the LJP (RV) hosted a Bahujan Bhim Sankalp Samagam in Nalanda, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's constituency. This was the first time that the party, formed three-and-a-half years ago after a split in the Lok Janshakti Party founded by the late Dalit leader Ram Vilas Paswan, organised a political programme under the banner of Bahujan, an overarching term often used for a coalition of Dalit, Other Backward Classes, Tribes and minorities.
Justifying the switch from being known as a Dalit to a Bahujan party, Mr. Bharti said, 'There is an obvious gap in Bahujan leadership in the Hindi belt. The leaders who had led the Bahujan movement either are not there or have become weak. There is no leader qualified to represent this group. Chirag Paswan, even while being in government, offers the only voice who takes up the concerns of this group.'
Mr. Paswan recently announced that he will contest the Assembly elections and specified that he will pick a non-reserved seat. Explaining the reason, Mr. Bharti said, 'Chirag Paswan or LJP (RV) is not a political outfit of one caste, creed or community. We speak for one and all.'
Barring two Assembly polls in 2005 (February and October), the erstwhile LJP, led by Ram Vilas, never got a double-digit vote share in Bihar since its formation in 2000. Its vote share has ranged from five to close to seven per cent, which also coincides with the Paswan population in the State. It reflects the LJP's failure to hold any influence over other Dalit caste groups. According to the 2022 caste survey in the State, Dalits comprise an estimated 19.65% of the State's population.
To a question on whether repeated remarks by Mr. Paswan and the party on the need to rise above the caste divide ignored the State's reality, Mr. Bharti said that fragmentation in the electorate into various groups suits certain parties but it does not necessarily help the voter. 'Yes, caste is a truth of the society. But we must also remember that poverty or illness does not differentiate between various castes or religions,' he added.
On whether Mr. Paswan is a Dalit leader and his party a Dalit outfit, Mr. Bharti said, 'We would have been in the past... Right now, Chirag Paswan is a Bahujan leader and LJP (RV) is a Bahujan party and going ahead it is going to be our endeavour to make this party a national party so that we can raise the voice for caste or class.'
LJP (RV) will hold another round of rallies in south Bihar. The focus on the region is deliberate, said Mr. Bharti. 'There are certain regions in Bihar — Shahbad and Magadh – where the NDA did not perform well. For example, in Shahbad, out of 22 seats, the NDA got only two seats (in the last Assembly election). If you are a responsible ally, you have to show strength in the areas where you can make the NDA stronger. We have seen that Chirag Paswan's presence here brings in greater turn out in favour of the NDA,' he added.

Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam also reacted to MNS workers slapping the shopkeeper and said that laws will be enforced if anyone disrespects the language in the state. 'In Maharashtra, you have to speak Marathi. If you don't know Marathi, your attitude shouldn't be that you won't speak Marathi... ‘Shows the mentality of BJP leaders': Karnataka MLC N Ravikumar in the dock over vulgar comments against Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh
Karnataka BJP MLC N Ravikumar is at the centre of another row over his alleged derogatory comments against state Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, drawing sharp reactions from the Congress party. While N Ravikumar made the remarks against Rajneesh during a protest in front of Vidhana Soudha Monday, a police complaint was filed on Wednesday. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary S Manohar filed the complaint at the Vidhana Soudha Police Station, demanding legal action against him for using unparliamentary language when referring to Rajneesh. The Congress party also said it will petition the Legislative Council Chairman, Basavaraj Horatti. On Monday, BJP leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, MLA Cement Manju, Ravikumar, and former MP S Muniswamy, staged a protest at Vidhana Soudha against the eviction of Dalit families living in Kadugodi, Bengaluru. The Karnataka IAS Officers' Association condemned his remarks, and demanded an unconditional apology from the BJP legislator. Ravikumar made the remarks during a protest rally organised by the BJP at Kalaburagi on May 24. Ravikumar said the deputy commissioner's office in Kalaburagi had lost its independence, and that the DC was 'listening' to what Congress says. 'I don't know whether she comes from Pakistan or is an IAS officer here. Listening to your applause, I think she might have come from Pakistan,' he said.

BSP leader Armstrong murder: Brother moves Madras High Court seeking CBI probe
The Madras High Court, on Thursday (July 3, 2025) directed the Sembium police in Chennai to file its counter affidavit to a plea seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the murder of former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) state president K. Armstrong on July 5, 2024. Justice P. Velmurugan directed Additional Public Prosecutor R. Muniyapparaj to ensure the counter was filed by July 18 and directed the High Court Registry to list the plea, filed by the late politician's younger brother K. Immanuvel, for further hearing on July 21. The petitioner had sought transfer of the case from Greater Chennai City police to CBI on the ground that there were serious contradictions and material shortcomings in the probe conducted by the Sembium police leading to doubts over the impartial nature of the investigation. In his affidavit, the petitioner complained that the Sembium police had concluded the investigation in October 2024 and filed a 5,000-page charge sheet against 30 named individuals by projecting gang rivalry, and not any political reason, as the sole motive behind the murder. 'Political angles excluded' 'The deceased was an active Dalit rights advocate. Yet, political angles and threats from vested interests have been consciously excluded. The deliberate anchoring of motive to an alleged gang rivalry is an attempt to insulate political perpetrators,' the petitioner told the court. He also brought to the notice of the court that eight armed assailants, disguised as food delivery agents, had hacked the politician to death as reflected in the First Information Report but the police had gone about listing as many as 30 accused in the charge sheet without arresting some of them. Pointing out that the charge sheet itself states that at least two key conspirators were absconding, the petitioner said, the failure to apprehend them 'signifies either collusion, dereliction, or political shielding.' The petitioner also accused the police of having deliberately ignored the statements of key witnesses. He said, the statements given by the Armstrong's wife Porkodi and the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry chairman P.S. Amalraj had not been taken into consideration. 'This selective approach undermines the investigation's objectivity and reveals an attempt to construct a preferred narrative,' he added. The petitioner also relied upon a few Supreme Court decisions to contend that a CBI probe could be ordered even after the city police had completed the investigation and filed a final report before the jurisdictional court.
