Man who used Snapchat to try and meet up with 13yo boy jailed for 'vile' and 'calculated' offending
Luke Edward Reynolds will serve six months behind bars after pleading guilty in the Brisbane District Court to using electronic communication to procure a child under 16, indecent treatment of a child, and possessing child exploitation material.
Reynolds was 28 years old when he sent a photograph of his genitals to a 13-year-old boy he had started grooming through an online chatroom in April 2024.
The court heard the sexualised conversation moved to Snapchat, with Reynolds later organising to meet the boy in Brisbane.
In sentencing Reynolds to two years' imprisonment, with the actual time served to be six months, Judge Brad Farr described the offending as "horrid" and "calculated".
He said it had persisted even after the boy became "nervous" and left on his pushbike.
The court heard the boy's parents had become suspicious of where he had been when they discovered explicit messages from Reynolds on his phone.
Reynolds continued messaging the boy, including sending him a photo of his genitals — not realising he was actually communicating with police officers who the boy's father had contacted to report what occurred.
He was arrested on April 10 when he went to meet who he thought was the boy.
He was found with a cooler bag containing a towel, condoms, lubricant and anal cream.
The court heard Reynolds admitted to police that he knew the child was under the age of 16 and that he intended to have sex with him.
An examination of his phone found images of naked teenage children had been saved, the court heard.
Defence barrister Patrick Wilson said Reynolds was "sexually naive" and had never had sex before.
He said his client was "remorseful", had been a bit of a "loner" through life, and suffered from depression and anxiety.
Mr Wilson said the proceedings and their publicity had "a substantial impact" on Reynolds, pointing to the "number of journalists" in the courtroom covering the case.
He said Reynolds had lost his job as a ferry driver but was "driven out of that industry by virtue of the publicity associated with his arrest".
Reynolds was described by his defence lawyer as "someone who has good prospects of rehabilitation long-term".
Judge Farr accepted Reynolds' remorse but said the offending showed "little thought" to the potential harm posed to the victim.
"Even after the child exhibited … concern at following through … and perhaps even fear, you persisted to try and encourage him.
"A sentence which reflects public denunciation of such vile conduct is relevant."

Four women charged for allegedly smuggling spicy cocaine into Brisbane
Four women, including two teenagers, have been charged with allegedly attempting to smuggle 30kg spicy-soaked cocaine into Brisbane. Two 18-year-old Australian girls flew from Hong Kong to Brisbane on July 3 when they were stopped by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers. After examining their four suitcases, officers discovered 30 bricks wrapped in towels, which had been soaked in vinegar and chilli. The ABF alleged the bricks contained white substance, which returned a positive result for cocaine. Police also located and arrested two people in Australia, who they allege provided instructions relating to obtaining passports, airline tickets and accommodation. Two 18-year-old women were charged with one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled substance. The other women, aged 23 and 21, were charged with one count of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug. Both offences carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. All four women appeared before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday July 4. An 18-year-old girl was refused bail and will return to court on July 17. The other three women were granted conditional bail and will return to court on July 18. ABF Acting Commander Troy Sokoloff said there was no clever way to try and smuggle drugs into the country. 'Working in close partnership with law enforcement partners, the ABF uses world-leading technology, intelligence-led targeting, and the sharp instincts of our well-trained frontline officers to stay one step ahead of criminal syndicates, no matter how clever they think they are,' he said. 'Whether it's a few grams of cocaine in an envelope, or 30 kilograms in a suitcase, the ABF's expertise prevents these harmful substances from making their way into the Australian community, where they can and do cause significant harm.'

CCTV footage captures brazen breakfast bandit snatching DoorDash delivery from Prahran doorstep
A cheeky breakfast bandit has been caught on CCTV footage sneaking into the front gate of a property in inner Melbourne to swipe a DoorDash delivery. A young woman in leafy Prahran contacted the Herald Sun after realising her $13.50 smoothie had been poached from the door step. The woman had received a notification that her order had been dropped off — but then before she made it to the door, her CCTV cameras alerted her that another person had made their way through the gate of her yard. Footage revealed a brazen bandit who looked to be passing by before spotting the brown bag and sneaking in to pinch it before scuttling back onto the street. His dog follows, confused close behind. 'It was only out there for three minutes,' the woman who ordered the smoothie said. 'I'm not mad, just hungry.' Finding all but an empty doorstep, the woman could only hope the smoothie snatcher was lactose intolerant. The woman has contacted police to report the alleged offender.

Two bodies found in unit on Kingsford Smith Pde, Maroochydore
Two men have been found dead inside a unit on the Sunshine Coast, with police appealing to the public for assistance in their investigation. Emergency services were called to the Kingsford Smith Parade housing complex in Maroochydore at about 11.20am on Friday, after concerns were raised for their welfare. Officers located the bodies of two men inside. It is understood the 65-year-old Maroochydore man lived at the property, and the 56-year-old man from Mountain Creek was a regular visitor. The unit has been declared a crime scene. Forensic officers and detectives remained at the complex on Saturday morning as investigations into the circumstances of the deaths continued. The exact cause of death is unknown, and police believe there is no ongoing threat to the public. Authorities are now urging anyone with information or relevant CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation. Jacob Arthur Amos told the Sunshine Coast Daily he had tried to check in on his 'good mate' on Saturday morning. 'He wasn't answering his door, and now we know why,' he said.
