Banks's album Off with Her Head has plenty of atmosphere, but no spark

Independent28-02-2025

'There's a power that I'm carrying that I haven't felt before,' Banks told British Vogue last October of her new album, Off with Her Head. The 33-year-old Los Angelean promised the NME that the new music would be 'brave'. As a fan of confessional, female electro-pop, I was excited at the thought that she'd finally be dialling things up because – since the release of her 2014 debut, Goddess – I've been hunting in vain for a song that really locked emotional gears beneath the Teflon coating of moody, sexy-synth generalities. But while the black chiffon wafting is all very sultry and atmospheric, it fails to ignite the static sparks I'd hoped for.
The album's title nods to the psychology graduate's determination to bypass her head and write straight from her body, heart and soul. It's a good idea, but the overarching effect is that she sounds oddly detached. Take the opening track, 'Guillotine', over which she breathes menacingly about putting tape on somebody's mouth (her own?). She conjures the threat effectively but takes it nowhere.
I find the same problem elsewhere, as atmosphere leaks out of the speakers like dry ice before dissipating, leaving only an empty stage. 'Move' plays absentmindedly with the chord sequence of Cyndi Lauper's sentimental Eighties ballad 'True Colors', before Banks starts calling on her lover to 'move/ move/ move'. The only shift of sonic pace arrives as French singer/model Yesult changes language to a sly, entertaining patois in which she pouts: 'F*** me lentement'.
Yesult isn't the only collaborator to add some texture here. Sampha pops in with a little R&B lover boy swagger on 'Make It Up'. Best is the lead single, 'I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend', which finds Banks venting all her least sisterly feelings over rustily distorted bass springs. 'Set this bitch in motion, she's emotional,' she sneers in a sour-candy whisper. She's egged on by Doechii (who became only the third woman to win the Grammy Award for Best Rap album earlier this month). The rapper's ire explodes like a volcano halfway through the track, totally owning the unacceptable rage – 'I hate you bitches, I'm misogynistic' – before we're back with Banks's glacial snark.
There's a scant shift in vocal tone as Banks laments the loss of a confidante on 'Best Friends', although the song is underpinned by a pleasantly grungey-swashy guitar hook. On this track, she describes looking at photos online and seeing a woman who might dress the same, but isn't. Her regret swirls down the plughole of looped keyboard patterns.
There's more momentum built, and more vocal intent, on the title track about leaving a gaslighter. Here, the synths crackle to light through the fog, catching the contours of some real feeling. 'Stay' finds her on more tender, vulnerable ground, while the amusingly titled 'Delulu' levitates gracefully on a warm current of vocodered air and serrated electric guitar. Banks assumes a stalkerish persona, smugly indulging her delusion that the object of her obsessive affection will soon return her feelings. Yet too much of this album purrs by, forgettably and disengaged. Banks really needs to bring herself into focus.

Azealia Banks cancels UK festivals with claims she was pressured to 'support Pal

Azealia Banks has announced that she will no longer be performing Boomtown of Maiden Voyage after 'dealing with threats' from organisers. The controversial American rapper, 34, took to social media to claim that she was being forced to say she supports Palestine or be cut from the lineup, a claim the promoters deny. Taking to X, the 212 singer told her fans: 'So guys, I am cancelling Boomtown and Maiden Voyage. 'The promoters have been stressing me out for weeks trying to force me to say free Palestine and threatening to cut me from the bill because I won't say free Palestine and I'm not dealing with the threats and I'm not putting on a f***ing hijab. She added: 'I would much rather drop them and not associate with anything that has cheap group think bull***t attached to it. 'If they want to allow some no-name dj's to bully them into desecrating the nature of this music ecosystem and make ME the issue – whilst there being absolutely no ethical consumption under capitalism. Then that's fine. She clarified her stance in a following tweet that read: 'And no, I'm not saying f**k actual Palestine. But f**k your dumb a** slogans and performative bulls**t. Y'all wanna make a stance so bad but stand for absolutely nothing.' She continued to share various messages to her fans on social media, taking aim at organisers and performative Palestine supporters. Boomtown confirmed in a statement to Metro that they have not, and would not, dictate the beliefs of performers. 'Following her post on X in the early hours of this morning, we can confirm that Azealia Banks has withdrawn from the lineup and will no longer be performing at Boomtown Festival. 'For clarity, Boomtown does not and will never dictate the personal views and beliefs of performers,' a spokesperson said. The festival announced in January 2024 that it would be fundraising for Medical Aid for Palestinians, and an optional donation was put on all ticket purchases. The festival is set to take place from August 6 to August 10 at the Matterly Estate, Hampshire. Maiden Voyage Festival will take place on August 9 in Burgess Park, London. The change in lineup comes just weeks after Banks took to social media to claim that she was a Zionist. 'It should all be Israel. Palestine cannot support itself without help from other countries so the people should just leave or become naturalised Israelis,' she shared on X. 'Palestine is not a country. The area is called JUDEA for a reason.' The star has become known for her controversial comments, and throughout her career has been accused of homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia towards a variety of different nationalities. Notably, the star has shared a number of rants on X and Instagram, taking aim at various celebrities including Zayn Malik, Skai Jackson, and Kanye West. More Trending In 2016, she filed a police report against Russell Crowe after falling out during a hotel suite party. She also found herself at the centre of controversy in 2021 when she posted a video on Instagram of her exhuming the remains and collecting the bones of her dead cat, Lucifer. Furious Lana Del Rey fans have same complaint after singer brings tour to UK

Lana Del Rey is in the UK playing shows for her highly-anticipated tour. However, as the tour kicked off last night in Cardiff, many fans shared their disappointment Fans were bursting with excitement as singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey - who rarely performs in the UK - kicked off her UK and Ireland tour last night. The Born to Die singer, who headlined at Coachella last year, is performing in Glasgow tomorrow, Liverpool on Saturday, at Wembley Stadium in London on July 3 and 4, with tickets still available. She will also be performing in Dublin on June 30. Band London Grammar and singer Banks are supporting her on much of the tour. Plus, TikTok star turned recording artist, Addison Rae, will join her for the London shows. However, many were left confused by her performance at Cardiff's Principality Stadium last night (Tuesday, June 24). Following the highly-anticipated performance, they rushed to social media to share their thoughts. Many complained about the songs and length of her set list, while others noted her lateness, and some were unimpressed by the staging and "hologram performance". 'Very disappointing' One individual shared clips from the concert and asked: "Anyone else left the Lana Del Rey concert in Cardiff high key underwhelmed? The ticket cost way too much for how short her setlist was." Sharing their experience, one commented on the post and said: "Very disappointed indeed. £290 for two tickets to have her on for an hour ish... and 15 mins of that it was a hologram type video of her! Shocking." One other wrote: "100%. My fist time seeing her and it was meant to be the pinnacle of concerts for me and my partner. I felt underwhelmed and a bit dissatisfied. She is a ledge though so still think she's amazing." Another shared: "I saw her in a O2 academy in 2013 and it was one of the best concerts I've been to. Last night was so disappointing and 100% agree with you." Another viral video showed her performing and the concert goer said: "Lana Del Rey kicked her UK&Ireland Stadium Tour. Unfortunately she was not ready for a stadium tour and it became a disappointing concert.." 'No attention to detail' In another video, one individual said: "Lana came on at 8.53pm till 10.16pm. Snogged her husband. Sang Salvatore but read the lyrics from an iPhone!". Commenting on this post, one individual sarcastically wrote: "Our favourite part was when she performed three songs as a hologram in the window…" One other shared: "We paid nearly £500 for 2 tickets on the side 12 rows from front. Unfortunately the staging is not built for visibility, it's a box where you can only really see directly from the front and half the show she is way back in this box." They also noted: "The staging although atmospheric was just not visible. When you pay that much you expect to see. Also 3 songs not live just like watching a TV. The easing platform was a highlight but again saw all the mechanisms, no attention to detail." 'It was absolutely beautiful' However, there were many who enjoyed the show. One gushed: "I went, thought it was wonderful." Another supporter who had a great time added: "I don't know what you all saw but it was amazing. She was supposed to finish at 10 but kept the show going later because she was late on stage. "Her vocals were amazing and you all saying she wasn't good or it was disappointing are just sad she didn't sing Summertime Sadness 10 times." One other insisted the show was a "cinematic masterpiece". They added: "It is so rare for concerts to have a story for the show. The stage set was absolutely beautiful. She did perform most of her hits as well as some fan favourites." Another fan said: "I thought the stage was absolutely stunning I loved the house, lighting and use of green screen. I feel like not everyone understands what to expect at a Lana show. I found it super emotional and beautiful." And another agreed: "I also went last night and it was a dream come true for me, I don't know why everyone's being a negative Nancy."
