Durban July tops bumper sports betting weekend

The Boks are also in action on Saturday, while the Fifa Club World Cup is nearing its conclusion in the US.
Get ready for a super sporting weekend — to kick off the super sporting month of July.
For anyone who likes a spot of betting on 'The Game', it is a bonanza of action with a multitude of profit possibilities across a variety of sporting codes.
The iconic Durban July at Greyville on Saturday afternoon tops the bill. Africa's most famous and popular horse race is an annual showpiece that 'stops a nation' and even has millions of non-racing fans and one-a-year bettors trying their luck.
It will be the 129th running of the historic race, a Grade 1 event over 2200m with R5-million in prize money for successful owners.
For punters, the money is even better. The Pick 6 exotic bet alone is likely to amass a pool of R15-million – entry for which can be accessed via the Betway website or the TAB site.
The July is also a designated World Pool event, with punters around the globe betting into single, co-mingled Tote pools and building enormous pots for wagers such as Win, Exacta, Swinger and Quinella.
Betway account holders get in quick!
Three-year-old star Eight On Eighteen is a hot favourite to win champion trainer Justin Snaith a sixth July victory and his regular jockey Richard Fourie a fourth.
The wonder colt has been backed down to 14-10 on some bookmakers' boards – but good news for Betway account holders is that he was available at double that on the Fixed Odds section of the online betting site on Monday afternoon: 28-10. Get in quick! A Top 4 placing for Eight On Eighteen was fantastic value at R1.25 at the same time.
One of the delights of betting with a bookmaker is the 'Multi' option – sometimes known as the All-To-Come – which allows punters to bespoke tailor their multi-leg bets. A single bet can combine combinations of Wins and Places, with the multiplier effect boosting odds to dizzy heights.
As mentioned, the sporting fan's cup runneth over at the weekend. In addition to the Durban July, there's the following:
• Springboks vs Italy rugby Test in Pretoria
• Tour de France starts in Lille
• British F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone
• The BMW International Open golf in Germany
• The John Deere Classic golf in the US
• Continuation of the Fifa Club World Cup in the US
• Continuation of the Women's Euro Football Championship.

Mailula bids farewell to Wydad: Chiefs and Pirates on alert?

Former Wydad Athletic Club star Cassius Mailula could be an option for either Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates if he chooses to remain in Africa. The 24-year-old forward recently left Wydad after joining them on loan from Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Toronto FC. He recently competed for the Moroccan giants in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where he started two out of three Group G games and scored a goal in the process. In the 36 matches he played for Wydad, Mailula scored six times and provided seven assists. The Bafana attacker took to social media to thank the club. 'Dear Wydad family, it is with a heavy heart that I write this message, as I want to let you all know that I will not be continuing with the team for the upcoming season. My time with Wydad has been an incredibly special and rewarding experience, and I will forever be grateful for it,' Mailula said on social media. 'I would like to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you. From the security staff to the technical team, to my teammates, your kindness and support have meant the world to me. You all hold a very special place in my heart. 'I must also thank the president for giving me the incredible opportunity to represent Wydad, and coach Rulani [Mokwena] for his unwavering belief in me. Without his trust, I wouldn't be the player I am today. 'I wish the club, the fans, and everyone involved nothing but continued success in the upcoming season and beyond. Dima Wydad,' he concluded. Having left Wydad, Mailula is set to rejoin Toronto FC in the coming weeks in the MLS. The former Mamelodi Sundowns star still has a year left on his contract. Jakkie Cilliers' boot could be key to Bok Women's chances of success against Canada

Springbok Women and Bulls Daisies goal-kicking specialist Jakkie Cilliers is pleased with her recent return to form as the Boks gear up to take on Canada on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld. Image: AYANDA NDAMANE Independent Newspapers Springbok Women's goal-kicking ace Jakkie Cilliers' recent uptick in form could be crucial to the team's chances against Canada, and in the tight matches at the World Cup. The 24-year-old wing, who sometimes plays at outside centre, is the first-choice goal kicker for the Boks and the Bulls Daisies. The Springbok Men's team has demonstrated the value of an accurate goal kicker on the biggest stage of all, especially when matches are decided by one or two points. At the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, a hat-trick of one-point wins led them to a historic fourth title. The Springbok Women, like the men, play a forwards-dominated game, and the ability to capitalise on the penalties that accrue from the often relentless pressure is crucial. 'I am kicking well again,' said Cilliers. 'I did go through a bit of a tough patch and had help from a couple of people, but on our recent tour to Europe, coach Swys de Bruin just tweaked something small and suddenly I am kicking them from all over the place again.' Cilliers hopes her name is read out on Thursday when the team is announced for the first Test against Canada – the Bok Women's second at Loftus Versfeld. If she is in the matchday 23, it will be the second time she takes on the North Americans and this time, Cilliers believes, they have a chance to pull off a surprise win. Two years ago, Cilliers was part of the squad that lost 66-7 to Canada in Madrid. She is a perfectionist when it comes to her kicking, and she hopes to have a chance to make up for the penalty attempt she missed in the Spanish capital. Former England-based forward Catha Jacobs was able to offer her Springbok Women teammates valuable insights into Canada's players ahead of this Saturday's Test match. Image: BackpagePix Intimate knowledge of the home conditions will count in the left-footed kicker's favour. The clash at Loftus (1.30pm kick-off) will be the first between the Bok Women and the North Americans on South African soil. 'Loftus is not the easiest place to play, especially if you are not used to the altitude and once that gets to you, it is tough,' Cilliers said. 'Most of our players know the surface well, how the ball bounces and even how easy it is to lose your footing, so that is something that could add to the small margins in any game. 'We know Canada are really playing well but having firsthand knowledge of the stadium and the surface and being used to the altitude will certainly be to our benefit.' Having played against most of the Canadian team on a regular basis in England, Springbok Women's utility forward Catha Jacobs is in a good position to act as a sounding board for her teammates. Jacobs, who just completed a three-year stint with the Leicester Tigers Women, where she played with Canadian flyhalf Claire Gallagher – but also against 14 other Canadians plying their trade in the English league – had some good insights to share with the rest of the South African side. 'Individually, they are really skilful and one can see why – if you put them all in one team – they are number two in the world,' said Jacobs.

Durban July 2025 betting guide: Favourites, form and what to expect at Greyville

Get ready for the Durban July Last year's champion, Oriental Charm, has already emerged as one of the early favourites for the 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July. Photo: Gold Circle Image: Gold Circle Eight of Eighteen is the favourite to take top honours at this weekend's running of the Durban July at Greyville Racecourse. All eyes will be on the three-year-old colt, trained by Justin Snaith and ridden by champion jockey Richard Fourie, as he heads into the R5 million Durban July on the back of some impressive results. Eight of Eighteen, who comes in at 14/10 to win on Saturday, came out tops at the prestigious Cape Town Met in January, and again at the SplashOut Cape Derby a month later. And for good measure, the young colt was also victorious in the Daily News 2000 in Durban. Sail The Seas, the only horse to beat Eight of Eighteen this year, will not be in Durban. Oriental Charm, the winner from last year, is expected to give Eight of Eighteen a run for his money, coming in at 11/2 to take top honours. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. While Eight of Eighteen will be the name on everyone's lips on Saturday, punters shouldn't take their eyes off Oriental Charm, as his form going into this weekend is better than when he came out tops last year. After a disappointing seventh place at the King's Plate in Kenilworth, the JP van der Merwe-ridden Oriental Charm earned two second-place finishes at the Cape Town Met and the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge in Durban. What's shaping up is a thrilling head-to-head between the rising star and the proven champion. With Eight of Eighteen riding the momentum of a good 2025, and Oriental Charm hungry to reclaim his crown after coming close in recent starts, Saturday's race is expected to deliver fireworks down the final stretch at Greyville. At 7/1 odds, Immediate Edge, who will be ridden by Callan Murray, should also be in the conversation come Saturday. He heads into the July on the back of four wins. But with all of his races having taken place at Turffontein this year, it remains to be seen if racing at sea level will have an impact on his day. Five-year-old See It Again and The Real Prince, aged four, round out the top five at 25/2 and 14/1 odds. The Michael Roberts-trained See It Again will be out to recapture some magic from 2023 when he won a number of races and finished second in the Durban July. The Real Prince, winner at the City of Cape Town Jet Master Stakes at Kenilworth, will also be keen to make a splash. Durban July 2025 – Runners List and odds according to Hollywoodbets 1.
