Delhi Hikes Cash Reward For Olympic Winners, Approves Free Laptop Scheme For Students
The Delhi government has hiked the cash awards for Olympic and Paralympic medallists from the national capital, minister Ashish Sood said on Tuesday.
Mr Sood also announced the approval of the Mukhyamantri Digital Scheme to provide free laptops to meritorious students.
The decisions were taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at the Delhi Secretariat here.
"Today, under the leadership of CM Rekha Gupta, a Cabinet meeting was held. Various important decisions were taken for Delhi's development, students and youth," Mr Sood told a press conference.
"There were historic decisions taken under the Mukhyamantri Khel Prothsahan Yojana. Olympic and Paralympic medal winners were awarded Rs 3 crore, Rs 2 crore and Rs 1 crore earlier... to encourage the sports ecosystem, Olympic gold medallists will now be given Rs 7 crore, silver medallists Rs 5 crore and bronze medallists Rs 3 crore," he said.
Mr Sood announced that the Gold and Silver medallists will be given Group A jobs while the bronze medallists will be given Group B jobs in the Delhi government.
Mr Sood also announced that under the Mukhyamantri Digital Scheme, free laptops would be provided to students to ensure the holistic development of the youth.
"As many as 1,200 meritorious students who have passed Class 10 with good marks will be given i7 laptops. This will benefit students from underprivileged backgrounds," he added.

UP Cabinet clears 1% stamp duty cut for women, plan for Chitrakoot Link e-way
THE STATE Cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to provide a 1 per cent rebate in stamp duty on purchase of properties worth up to Rs 1 crore in the name of women. A plan for the Chitrakoot Link Expressway project also got the green signal during the meeting. Cabinet Minister Anil Rajbhar told mediapersons later that the decision regarding the rebate in stamp duty was made from the 'point of view of women empowerment.' Rajbhar said that so far, this exemption was applicable only on property up to Rs 10 lakh in the state, in which a maximum discount of Rs 10,000 was available. Rajbhar said the move would benefit women from middle-class families in particular. The Cabinet also cleared a proposal for the start of the Monsoon session of the Assembly from August 11. The previous (budget) session of the UP Assembly had taken place from February 18 to March 5. In another significant decision, the Cabinet cleared a proposal for the construction of a four-lane, 15-km Chitrakoot Link Expressway. Industries Minister Nand Gopal Gupta 'Nandi' informed that the project would be completed using the Engineering-Procurement Construction method at an estimated cost of Rs 939.67 crore. He said the 15.172 km expressway would start from Bhartikup and go up to Ahmedganj village. It would connect with the Varanasi-Banda National Highway (NH-35/76) and establish connectivity with National Highway 135 BG, said Nandi. He said the project was aimed at promoting tourism in Chitrakoot as devotees and tourists coming from far-flung areas would also get 'smooth and fast traffic facility to the district.' The construction work will be completed in 548 days and after this maintenance work will be done for five years. There would be no financial participation of the Centre in this project, said Nandi. The Cabinet also cleared a plan to upgrade 121 polytechnic institutes across Uttar Pradesh with the help of Tata Technology Limited (TTL). Cabinet Minister Ashish Patel informed that in collaboration with TTL, these institutes would get a fillip through 'Tata Technology Excellence Centre.' He said the estimated cost of the project would be Rs 6,935 crore, of which Rs 6,034.20 crore would be borne by TTL, while Rs 1,063.96 crore would be spent by the state government. The state government will spend an additional Rs 858 crore for infrastructure development and establishment of basic facilities. He said that in the first phase, 45 polytechnic institutes would get an upgrade as a pilot project.

'Govt does not foresee revenue shortfall, aims to achieve deficit target'
The Central government does not foresee any revenue shortfall at this stage and aims to achieve the targets fixed in the Budget Estimates for 2025-26, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed Parliament on Tuesday. As per the Budget, the Centre has estimated the fiscal deficit for 2025-26 at 4.4 per cent of GDP, amounting to Rs 15.69 lakh crore. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, the minister said the Central government supports state finances through Finance Commission grants, Centrally Sponsored Schemes, and Special Assistance as loans to states for capital expenditure. Total resources being transferred to the states, including the devolution of state's share in taxes, grants/loans and releases under Centrally Sponsored Schemes, etc, in Budget Estimates for 2025-26 is about Rs 25.01 lakh crore, he said. In reply to another question, Chaudhary said, as per inputs received from Public Sector Banks (PSBs), as on March 31, 2025, 96 per cent staff are in position against their business requirement. The small proportion of gap is attributable to attrition on account of superannuation and other usual factors, including unplanned exits, he said. Further, during the last 5 years (FY 2020-25), banks have recruited 1,48,687 employees, and for FY 2025-26, recruitment of 48,570 employees is underway, he added. Replying to another question, Chaudhary said, insurers are required to decide on the request for cashless authorisation within 1 hour of receipt of such request and grant final authorisation within 3 hours of the receipt of discharge authorisation request from the hospital as per IRDAI Master Circular on Health Insurance Business dated May 29, 2024. However, the data related to the average time taken by insurance companies and third-party administrators (TPAs) for the claim settlement is not maintained by IRDAI, he said. IRDAI has informed that during FY 2023-24, 58.39 per cent of total claims were settled through cashless mode in terms of count and 66.16 per cent in terms of amount, he said. As per the data provided by National Health Authority, he said, the number of hospitals onboarded to National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) is 450 as on March 28, 2025. In another reply, Chaudhary said, enforcement action has been taken against 886 entities during the period April 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, for violation of provisions of SEBI (Prohibition of Fraudulent and Unfair Trade Practices Relating to Securities Market) Regulations, 2003. Continuous monitoring of key parameters is done to assess the effectiveness of measures implemented in the market, he said. Surveillance systems, data analytics tools and digital forensics tools are constantly upgraded to detect manipulations, he added.

India Helping Maldives Stabilise Its Stressful Financial Situation: Foreign Secretary Misri
NEW DELHI: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday stated that India has been lending a "helping hand" to the Maldives to stabilise its "stressful financial" situation, highlighting New Delhi's role in bolstering the island nation's foreign exchange reserves through significant financial assistance. Addressing a press briefing ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Maldives, Misri elaborated on India's support for the island nation, noting that a USD 400 million swap line has been nearly fully utilised to stabilise its financial situation. Maldives has been grappling with a mounting debt crisis that threatens its economic sovereignty, as its foreign exchange reserves dwindle to precarious levels while substantial debt repayments loom. Maldives is currently needing to service external debt worth USD 600 million in 2025, which can amount to a staggering USD 1 billion by 2026. Misri also emphasised that India remains in close contact with Maldivian authorities to explore further support, describing the situation as dynamic and requiring ongoing collaboration. "Insofar as the issue related to the financial stability of Maldives is concerned, it is a fact that it has faced a stressful financial environment, and that is why we have been giving a helping hand to Maldives in order to stabilise the financial situation. Our recent assistance has led to accretions in the foreign exchange position of the Maldives, and it is this accretion, as a matter of fact, that has been cited by international financial organisations, including the IMF, as a positive factor that has helped the Maldives stave off outcomes that could be difficult for it," the Foreign Secretary stated. "This is a dynamic situation. We will remain in close touch with our friends and partners in the Maldives to see what else we can do. In any case, so far as the swaps are concerned, my understanding is that the USD 400 million swap line has been drawn almost completely, and now perhaps the USD 30 billion rupee Indian swap line will also be drawn upon," he added. Last year, during Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu visit to India, the Union Government extended support in the form of USD 400 million and Rs 30 billion as a bilateral currency swap agreement in order to tackle the ongoing financial challenges faced by the Maldives. Earlier in May, the Union Government has extended support to the island nation by rolling over the USD 50 Million treasury bill. Addressing the broader turnaround in India-Maldives relations after ties between New Delhi and Male were strained following derogatory remarks made by Maldivian officials about Prime Minister Modi in early January last year, Misri underscored the resilience of the partnership. He credited the close discussions with Maldivian partners for providing clarity and assurances on the matter while highlighting India's continued support through its military or infrastructural assets provided to the Maldives for its development. "There will always be events that will impact or try to intrude on the relationship. But I think this is testimony to the kind of attention that has been paid to the relationship, including attention at the highest levels that has been paid to the relationship. We've continued to work at it, and I think the result is there for you to see. I think we have also been in very close discussions with our partner partners in the Maldives to provide clarity and assurances about what it is that we want to do bilaterally, and I think this is the result is there for all to see," the Foreign Secretary stated. "With regard to the assets that we have provided them. They continue to function there with the appropriate personnel to manage them and to assist the Maldives authorities in using them for the best possible results," Misri added. Notably, ties between New Delhi and Male were strained after Maldivian officials made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Modi in early January last year. However, during the visit of Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer in April 2024, Zameer distanced his government from the derogatory remarks made by these officials, stating that it was not the government's stance and that "proper action" had been taken to ensure such remarks were not repeated. Earlier in January, India handed over defence equipment and stores to the Maldives, as per the island nation's request, while reiterating its firm commitment to working closely in realising the joint vision for the India-Maldives Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. PM Modi will embark on his two-nation tour of the UK and the Maldives from July 23 to July 26, the MEA had said on Sunday. From July 25, he will be on a two-day state visit to Maldives at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu. He has been invited as the 'Guest of Honour' for the 60th Anniversary celebrations of the Independence of Maldives on July 26. Notably, the visit by PM Modi comes at a historic juncture as New Delhi and Male are marking their 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. This will be the Prime Minister's third visit to the Maldives and the first visit by a Head of State or Government to the Maldives during the Presidency of Mohamed Muizzu
