Umno to contest GE16 under BN, rejects solo path says Ahmad Zahid
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that Umno remains a core component of Barisan Nasional (BN) and will continue to collaborate with its coalition partners.
Ahmad Zahid dismissed suggestions that Umno's recent by-election losses were due to its alliances with BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH).
He addressed concerns raised by party members, clarifying that the idea of contesting alone was not limited to Kedah but had also surfaced in Johor.
'There are resolutions from some divisions implying that our defeats stem from having allies in BN and PH... that we've been at a disadvantage because we did not contest alone,' he said during the opening of the 2025 Lumut Umno Division Delegates' Meeting.
He reaffirmed that Umno will retain the dacing (scales) logo, symbolising BN, in GE16 while maintaining partnerships with MIC, MCA, PH, and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS).
The event was attended by Perak Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Lumut Umno Division chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had earlier echoed this stance, stating that the party has never contested alone despite evolving political landscapes. - Bernama

Some tenants of Tg Aru flats said no to relocation offers, Sabah assembly told
KOTA KINABALU: Renters of the Tanjung Aru low-cost flats have been advised to search for alternative housing if they reject relocation offers or are not eligible for further People's Housing Project (PPR) units. Sabah Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said that after the eviction notices were served, relocation offers were given to 237 of the 315 tenants there. ALSO READ: Tanjung Aru flat residents face eviction deadline amid hopes for extension He said 58 households were not offered PPR homes because they did not meet the terms and conditions, while 20 others already own homes under their names. He added that 113 of the 237 offered PPR homes had accepted them. The remaining 124 households rejected the offers as they felt that they would be too far from workplaces, children's schools, or hospitals, Gunsalam told Datuk Junz Wong (Warisan-Tanjung Aru) during question time in the state assembly here on Monday (July 7). 'For those who reject the offers, and those who are not eligible to dwell in PPR homes, we suggest that they find alternative homes,' he said. 'I have sent multiple requests to the Land and Property Development Corporation (LPPB) to have a meeting to discuss and find a solution to this matter but have yet to receive any response,' he said. Gunsalam said he was willing to meet up with Wong and LPPB representatives to discuss the matter. On a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Lamag) as to whether the state would change the PPR policy of temporary rental to a "rent-to-own" mechanism, Gunsalam said it was a matter for the Federal Government. The Tanjung Aru flats are on prime land and part of the proposed Tanjung Aru Eco Development Project, which incorporates various high-end facilities. Originally given until the end of 2021 to move, some residents have stayed put while the state government deliberates on the redevelopment project's future.

Sabah never a priority for peninsula-based coalitions: Pairin

PAPAR: The Sabah Government must be led by local-based parties to ensure true progress for the State and people, rather than political coalitions dominated by Peninsular Malaysian parties. Former Chief Minister and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Premier Advisor Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said it is crucial for local leadership to govern Sabah so as to safeguard the state's interests and drive development tailored to State's unique needs. Advertisement 'It's very simple. If the dominant party (governing the State Government) comes from Semenanjung (Peninsular Malaysia), they are not really thinking about our development here. 'They have always been focusing more on their wilayah (regions). To be fair, this is Malaysia,' he said, after opening PBS Limbahau's 40th Annual General Meeting at the multipurpose hall of Mositun Kg Sungkadon-Novoung, Sunday. Also present were PBS Limbahau divisional head Datuk Johnny Mositun, PBS senior leaders Datuk Seri Radin Malleh and Datuk Edward Yong, former Buang Sayang assemblyman Datuk Claudius Sundang Alex, and divisional heads. Barisan Nasional (BN) — led by Umno in Sabah — governed the state for about 24 years continuously from 1994 to 2018 until defeated by Warisan in the 2018 general election. Pairin, who is also Huguan Siou or paramount leader of the Kadazandusun Murut (KDM) community, was asked to explain his call to the delegates here on the importance of making sure local parties become the backbone of the State government. Based on his political knowledge and experience as well as holding various ministerial portfolios during the then governance by BN in Sabah for almost three decades, he said key issues under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) remain unresolved even after more than six decades since the formation of Malaysia. 'It's (claiming for Sabah rights and interests under MA63) still on the negotiating table. That cannot be — we're supposed to be over 60 years already, and yet we are still suffering,' he said. Pairin urged Sabahans to ensure local parties get the mandate to form the State Government. 'That must be the focus because the thinking and heart of local parties of Sabahan leaders lies sympathetically with the state and its people,' he said. Asked whether his stance aligned with the slogan 'Sabah for Sabahans,' Pairin replied, 'Yes, that is the reminder.' Earlier, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Deputy-Secretary General Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali expressed the same sentiment. To a question, Pairin said PBS is ready to defend the Limbahau State seat in the coming State poll; besides other constituencies. He said PBS has long championed Limbahau and that it was only fitting for the party to contest the seat again. 'Our PBS Limbahau divisional head (Datuk Johnny Mositun) has been fighting for such a long time, non-stop. I think it should be considered. This is not over yet; it's still ongoing. 'As for other constituencies, everyone has their own opinion. We will deliver it to the party leadership to be discussed and considered,' he said. Pairin also called on Sabah youths who have turned 18 and automatically become voters to cast their votes as they are leaders who will inherit and shape Sabah's future and the nation. 'It is very important for leaders in political parties to ensure that the younger generation realize that they have the responsibility. 'The responsibility is to realise that this is their country, this is their state, this is their home, and this is where they expect to work and have families – where their future lies. Meanwhile, PBS Acting President Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said co-operation with peninsula-based parties is important, but priority must be given to political stability and leadership at the state level. He added that such collaboration should only exist when local parties (GRS) are at the helm of Sabah. 'Sabah is our homeland. We understand it better and are in a stronger position to resolve issues in a more inclusive and comprehensive manner,' he stressed. He also reminded PBS members that they are the backbone of the party and urged the entire party machinery to rise and champion PBS's aspirations throughout the state. ‘Umno will never go solo'

He stressed the party's continued commitment to cooperating with other component parties in Barisan Nasional. He dismissed claims that Umno's recent losses in several by-elections were due to its alliance with component parties within Barisan and Pakatan Harapan. 'Umno and Barisan have never contested on their own. I promise and declare that we will contest under the Barisan symbol in the upcoming general election,' he said at the opening of the Lumut Umno division meeting here yesterday. Also present were Perak Umno chief Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Lumut Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir. Ahmad Zahid, who is Barisan chairman, said the coalition's parties, MIC, MCA and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah, alongside its unity government partner Pakatan, will not be sidelined. He said while Barisan may contest under its own banner, it will do so with the support of allies in Pakatan and other component parties. 'They have helped us by reaching out and engaging Chinese voters in support of the Barisan candidate (for the Mahkota state seat) and we won by a margin of over 20,000 ... thanks to the support from our friends in other parties,' he said. He stressed that despite the setbacks in the previous general election, it was not a matter of sadness or fear but rather a lesson in political strategy for greater success in the coming elections. On another matter, Ahmad Zahid stressed on the importance of support and respect for Barisan component parties to achieve victory in an election. Victory cannot be achieved alone, he said, urging Umno members to strengthen ties with their partners in MIC and MCA. 'These parties stood by us during hard times. Now it is our turn to support them to ensure Umno and Barisan candidates dominate both state and parliamentary seats again. The same goes for our cooperation with Pakatan,' he added. He said that cooperation with Barisan component partners is one of the key conditions for the coalition to recapture three seats in Lumut in GE16. The three are the Lumut parliamentary seat as well as Pangkor and Pasir Panjang state seats – seats which are currently held by Perikatan Nasional. He said Umno and Barisan leaders in Lumut must stand united and there should be no room for division. 'Our political opponents are not as strong as we think. It is our internal weaknesses and the loss of confidence in our own party that have hurt our cause the most. 'Old habits such as backstabbing, blaming leaders and finger-pointing must stop immediately. 'Unity within the Lumut division is the first and foremost condition for victory,' he said in his speech. He reminded the party to let go of the past and accept today's political reality. 'As part of the unity government, we can no longer act like the dominant party of the past, making demands at will. 'The people are watching and evaluating our maturity. Arrogance and pride must be eradicated. 'We must show that Umno has changed and is ready to regain public trust through humility and wise strategy,' he added. He said Umno should regard social media as an important medium to gain support, especially among young voters. 'Umno Youth and Puteri Umno must lead the digital narrative. Engaging voters with relevant, respectful and convincing content is essential in rebuilding trust. 'This is our final opportunity to win back all three seats in Lumut. We must not waste it,' said Ahmad Zahid.
