Over the last couple of weeks, there has been speculation that 5-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson was nearing a decision in his high-profile recruitment. On Monday evening, a clearer timeline emerged.
Atkinson, the No. 1 LB and No. 9 player in the 2026 class, per the 247Sports Composite, announced that he would be making his commitment on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, airing on ESPN. Atkinson is down to a final four schools of the Oregon Ducks, Georgia Bulldogs, Texas Longhorns, and Clemson Tigers.
While the Ducks have been in the game for Atkinson for quite a while, the sense was that he would be a tough pull from Georgia, where he is from. However, on Monday, a prediction was made by On3's Steve Wiltfong and Chad Simmons for the No. 1 linebacker to leave Georgia and go elsewhere. Unfortunately for Oregon fans, the prediction was for the Texas Longhorns to get him, rather than the Ducks.
While the Ducks may lose out on Atkinson in the end, there is still another big-name LB coming off the board this week, with 4-star LB Nick Abrams II announcing his commitment on Wednesday. Oregon is very much in the conversation there, but Abrams is currently predicted to choose the Bulldogs.

Here we go! Five-star LB Tyler Atkinson commits to Texas

The Longhorns have just gotten one of the best players in the nation. After being projected to land him on Monday night, five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson has committed to Texas over Georgia, Clemson, and Oregon. Atkinson is the No. 9 player in the nation and the No. 1 linebacker according to Rivals industry rankings. The Grayson High School star is the No. 1 prospect in the state of Georgia as well. Texas has now moved up to the No. 8 recruiting class in the country. Also, Atkinson is now the second highest-ranked commitment for the Longhorns, just a few spots behind five-star quarterback Dia Bell, who is now the No. 1 QB in the nation. It's been a very productive haul for Texas on the defensive side of the ball for the 2026 cycle. Some of the other notable additions are four-star cornerback Samari Matthews, five-star edge Richard Wesley, four-star defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland, four-star defensive lineman Dylan Berymon, and even ATH Jermaine Bishop is expected to play some cornerback. And this all comes after several heartbreaking recruiting losses over the past couple of weeks. Texas had the No. 1 class in 2025. They're now in a position to secure another elite one this time around. 5-star LB Tyler Atkinson announces surprising commitment

Five-star linebacker recruit Tyler Atkinson's recruitment took a twist just moments before his commitment decision. Atkinson, who had long been projected to commit to the Georgia Bulldogs, committed to the Texas Longhorns over Georgia, Oregon and Clemson. Georgia hosted Atkinson numerous times and poured a ton into their relationship with the elite linebacker recruit. However, Atkinson ended up committing to Texas. Atkinson's recruitment is similar to that of five-star class of 2025 defensive lineman Justus Terry. Both players are five-star recruits that are ranked among the best prospects in Georgia. Both players were heavily tied to Georgia, but Texas made one final push to land their respective commitment. Of course, Terry signed with Texas while Atkinson will have to wait until early signing day in December, so the Bulldogs still have a chance to reel in the elite linebacker. Atkinson is a member of the class of 2026. He is ranked as the nation's No. 9 recruit and is the top recruit in Georgia. Atkinson is the No. 1 linebacker recruit in the country and plays high school football for Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia. He recently won a 6A state championship with Grayson. Atkinson has potential as both an off-ball linebacker and as an edge rusher. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker announced his commitment on the "Pat McAfee Show". In 2024, Atkinson posted 166 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble with Grayson. "I feel like Texas is the best fit for me," said Atkinson. He highlighted Texas' coaches, their relationship with him and atmosphere as reasons why he committed to Texas over Georgia and others.
