Previous govts ignored MSMEs, fuelled caste-based conflicts: Yogi
LUCKNOW Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday accused the previous governments of ignoring the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector while keeping the state trapped in caste-based conflicts and nepotism for political gains. 'Before 2017, UP was known for riots, mafia, and was one of the most unsafe states for daughters and traders. Previous governments' neglect of entrepreneurs and promotion of caste-based conflicts hindered the growth of MSMEs in the state,' said the CM while speaking at a programme in Lucknow on International MSME Day.
The CM said the double-engine (BJP-led) government (Centre and UP), over the past eight years, had pulled the state out of a crisis of identity and restored pride by reviving local heritage through initiatives like the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) scheme.
He launched several key initiatives to promote entrepreneurship at the event organised at Lok Bhawan.
Adityanath accused previous governments of promoting caste-based conflicts and running the state based on family politics, where each district was controlled by a different mafia. 'As a result, people faced an identity crisis,' he added.
He also pointed out that despite being established in 1950, Uttar Pradesh never celebrated its Foundation Day until January 24, 2018.
'Earlier governments were too busy dividing society along caste lines and serving their own families instead of working for the state's development,' he remarked.
At the event, the CM inaugurated the 'Youth Adda', an initiative by UPICON to promote innovation and entrepreneurship. This platform will allow youth to share their business ideas, get help with bank loans, and receive guidance from experienced mentors.
The CM emphasized that his government did not discriminate based on caste, region, or language. 'We are committed to providing a platform to every talented youth,' he said.
Adityanath also launched the CM Yuva mobile app, a digital platform designed to connect the youth with entrepreneurship opportunities. The app will provide access to training, loans, and information about government schemes without any discrimination.
He said the app will ensure that no young person needs to run from one government office to another, as everything will be available in one place digitally.
Common Facilitation Centre (CFC) projects were also inaugurated under the ODOP scheme in Bareilly and Moradabad. These projects will provide infrastructure support to local artisans and entrepreneurs, enabling them to enhance their productivity and competitiveness.
'ODOP has given each district's unique product a global platform. The scheme has provided equal opportunities to artisans and entrepreneurs from all castes and communities, helping products like Moradabad's brassware, Bhadohi's carpets, and Lucknow's chikankari gain international recognition,' said the CM.
He pointed out that UP now has over 96 lakh MSME units employing more than two crore people across all communities. Adityanath emphasized that the government has provided a financial safety net of ₹ 5 lakh and social security to these units without any discrimination.
With a 14% share in the country's MSME sector, UP is now a leading state in this domain, he added.
He pointed out that before 2017, UP's exports hovered between ₹ 80,000 and ₹ 85,000 crore annually, which have now surged past ₹ 2 lakh crore. The state's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has more than doubled from ₹ 12.75 lakh crore to ₹ 31 lakh crore in the same period, the CM said.
He attributed this growth to the state's improved law and order situation and the government's focus on promoting entrepreneurship and industries.
Adityanath mentioned that the per capita income in the state has increased from ₹ 46,000 to ₹ 1.20 lakh. This growth is a testament to the state's economic progress and the government's efforts to promote entrepreneurship and employment opportunities.
Adityanath stated that the state's GDP has grown from ₹ 12.75 lakh crore to ₹ 31 lakh crore. This significant growth is a result of the government's policies and initiatives aimed at promoting economic development and entrepreneurship.
He announced the third edition of the International Trade Show, scheduled to be held in Greater Noida from September 25 to 29. The show will provide a global platform for MSME products to reach international buyers and promote the state's economic growth.
The CM also mentioned that the state government is working to obtain Geographical Indication (GI) tags for 77 products, with 75 new applications in progress. This initiative aims to protect the state's cultural heritage and promote its unique products.
An MoU was signed to increase the number of GI tags for the state's unique products. The agreement was exchanged between commissioner of industries K Vijyendra Pandian and Dr Rajnikant of the Human Welfare Association.

Adityanath called upon society to rise above caste divisions and embrace the ideals of Bhamashah, the legendary figure known for his unwavering patriotism, sacrifice and support to Maharana Pratap. He described Bhamashah as a timeless symbol of unity, service, and dedication to the nation. He also cited the historical contributions of Mysore's King Chamarajendra Wadiyar and Khetri's King Ajit Singh, who supported Swami Vivekananda's journey to the Parliament of Religions in Chicago. Similarly, he mentioned how Baroda's King Sayajirao Gaekwad awarded a scholarship to Dr B.R. Ambedkar for higher education abroad. 'Where was caste in these acts of support?' he asked, adding, 'These were examples of selfless, noble contributions that gifted the world great minds like Vivekananda and Ambedkar.' 'Bhamashah's sacrifice symbolised the true spirit of 'Nation First'. He believed that wealth earned from the country should be returned in service of the country,' the chief minister said. 'Every time we remember Maharana Pratap, we will also remember Bhamashah,' he added. Adityanath stated that in 2016, the murder of a trader took place in Lucknow and a jeweller was shot in Sultanpur—incidents that occurred under a regime which provided shelter to criminals. He stated that under his administration, the security of both traders and women has been treated as paramount. 'We made it clear that anyone who endangers their safety will face strict consequences—Yamraj will cut their ticket,' he remarked. The chief minister added that when action was taken against miscreants, those who once thrived on caste-based politics began shedding crocodile tears. He also talked about the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) scheme, which he said has boosted traditional industries and generated employment for millions. He instructed the GST department to organise annual felicitation ceremonies for the top 10 GST-paying traders in the state capital and the top 10 in each district. The chief minister announced that any GST-paying trader who suffers an accident will be given ₹ 10 lakh in assistance from the government. Adityanath called on traders to join the government's efforts for environmental protection. 'River rejuvenation and plantation drives are ongoing in every district. Traders and business organisations should actively participate,' he urged. CM felicitates top taxpayers The chief minister visited an exhibition showcasing the life of Bhamashah. He also presented the Bhamashah Samman to the state's top revenue-contributing traders and honoured several others for their exemplary contributions to society.

Article 370 was against Ambedkar's ideology of one Constitution: CJI BR Gavai
Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Saturday said that BR Ambedkar envisioned one Constitution to keep the country united and never favoured the idea of a separate Constitution for any state, PTI reported. Justice Gavai said that the Supreme Court drew inspiration from Ambedkar's vision of a united India when it upheld the Centre's decision to abrogate Article 370, which had granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre had abrogated Article 370 in August 2019. It also bifurcated the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. In December 2023, the Supreme Court, with Justice Gavai as a member of the five-judge Constitution bench, upheld the validity of the 2019 order abrogating Article 370 and ordered the Centre to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. 'When the hearing was underway, I recalled Dr Babasaheb's words that one Constitution is suited for a country,' Justice Gavai said while addressing a gathering at the inauguration of the Constitution Preamble Park in New Delhi. 'If we want to keep the country united, we need only one Constitution.' The Chief Justice of India added that Ambedkar had faced criticism, with some people saying that the Constitution's strong federalism might compromise national unity, especially during wartime. Ambedkar had then responded to his critics that the Constitution would suit all the challenges and keep the nation united, PTI quoted Justice Gavai as saying. 'See the situation in the neighbouring countries, be it Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka,' he added. 'Whenever our country faces challenges, it has remained united.'

Joint Council to hold marches on July 1 demanding measures for 12th pay revision
The Joint Council, the CPI service organisation, has announced marches to the Secretariat and the district headquarters on July 1 demanding the LDF government to kick off the process for pay revision of government employees. Pointing out that the State government has, as a 'model employer,' the duty to ensure the welfare of government employees, the Joint Council has urged the State government to implement the pay revision with effect from July 1, 2024. The term of the 11th Pay Commission, whose recommendations were implemented in 2021, had ended on June 30, 2024. The Joint Council noted that the pay revision every five years was implemented by the C. Achutha Menon government in 1973. The first revision came five years later in 1978. All Communist governments in Kerala since then have followed the five-year model, while the Congress-led governments have sought to make it a matter of dispute, the Joint Council said. The Joint Council is organising protest marches as the LDF government is yet to form the 12th Pay Revision Commission and launch the procedures for the new pay revision. Joint Council general secretary K.P. Gopakumar will inaugurate the Secretariat march on July 1.
