USA Today7 days ago
Notre Dame men's basketball has added a new non-conference opponent to its 2025-26 and 2026-27 schedules.
It was announced Wednesday that the Fighting Irish will travel to TCU for a December 5 showdown. It's the first game of a home-and-home series, with the Horned Frogs scheduled to travel to South Bend on December 5, 2026.
The Fighting Irish went 15-18 last season in Micah Shrewsberry's second season as head coach, and he has a 28-38 mark in two seasons in South Bend. Notre Dame is undefeated when playing against the Horned Frogs, as they are 5-0 but last played in 1997.
ND's non-conference slate this upcoming season also includes participation in the Players Era championship, where it will play Kansas, Rutgers and a third opponent to be determined. The Irish will also take part in the ACC/SEC Challenge against Missouri.
The 2025-26 season will mark the program's first under new general manager Pat Garrity.

Florida State QB Thomas Castellanos stands by his Alabama comments at ACC media day

Thomas Castellanos is not backing down from the way he views Alabama. The new Florida State quarterback appeared at ACC media days on Tuesday and was immediately asked about what he said in a summer interview with On3. In it, Castellanos said he was excited for his first game with the Seminoles in Week 1 against the Crimson Tide and that 'they don't have Nick Saban to save them. I just don't see them stopping me.' Tuesday, Castellanos kept that confidence. The Crimson Tide went 9-4 in Kalen DeBoer's first season in 2024 and ended the season with a ReliaQuest Bowl loss to Michigan. 'We stand on what I said,' Castellanos said. 'But there's no disrespect between that team or anything like that. It's just the confidence that I have in my teammates and the way we've been preparing and putting this preparation together this offseason. I just feel confident in the guys and the work that we've been putting in.' The former Boston College quarterback transferred to Tallahassee after the 2024 season and is tasked with upgrading the porous quarterback play that plagued Florida State last season. The Seminoles were 2-10 and averaged just 15 points per game as the offense was one of the worst in the country. After starting his career at UCF, Castellanos played two seasons at Boston College. He opened the 2024 season as the Eagles' starter but lost his starting job early in November in a game against Syracuse after he was just 2-of-7 passing in the first half. Not long after he lost his starting job, Castellanos left the team and said he would enter the transfer portal. He arrives at Florida State along with former UCF coach Gus Malzahn, the man who recruited him to UCF. Malzahn left his job at UCF for the FSU offensive coordinator job after the 2024 season. 'We have an opportunity here to really do something special, and I think that his focus is there on the offensive side of the ball, and he's one of the best that have ever done it,' Florida State coach Mike Norvell said of Malzahn on Tuesday. 'But he also brings perspective as a big picture, to continue to challenge every element within the organization, just to push to be the best, to be able to accomplish and do some of the things that he's been able to do on his journey and what we all aspire to be.'

Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti responds to letter sent to NCAA advocating for Michigan

It was a bit of a shocker earlier in the week to find out that Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti reportedly sent a letter to the NCAA advocating for Michigan not to face any more penalties for the alleged advanced sign-stealing allegations. You knew that it would be a topic of conversation with that news dropping right before Big Ten football media days, and sure enough, it didn't take long for the media to ask Petitti about it when he stepped to the podium to deliver his press conference on Tuesday. Being the politician and even-keeled spokesman for one of the biggest brands in sports, Petitti was not about to take the bate, but did confirm that he sent a letter. "We did submit a letter," Petitti said. "It's not uncommon in proceedings for a conference office to weigh in. I'm not gonna address what the contents of the letter we sent are, and because it's an ongoing process, I don't think it's appropriate for me to comment whether (the punishment) is enough or not while there are individuals deliberating. I don't think that's the right thing to do in the process." Petitti refusing to discuss the contents of the letter is not surprising, and neither is the reported contents of the letter coming from ESPN's Dan Wetzel. It's still an ongoing investigation, and Petitti isn't going to throw gasoline on the fire of a very controversial topic. Also, his advocating for one of the best and biggest brands in the Big Ten isn't surprising at all. He acted swiftly and appropriately early on, and now it's time to get in the bunker and try to keep the interests of the Big Ten above everything else. Keeping Michigan in the picture of the College Football Playoff is exactly what he is expected to do. Ohio State fans may not like his position -- in fact most in the college football world won't -- but it's better for the Big Ten to have Michigan being Michigan. The good news is that this whole thing is going to be over soon, probably right before or after the 2025 college footall season begins. Then, maybe we can all get on with our lives and just focus on football on the field.
