Egypt secures natural gas supplies to all sectors via 4 FSRUs

Arab Finance: The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is securing natural gas supplies to all sectors via four floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), according to a statement.
This move comes within the first pillar of the ministry's strategy to boost production and secure the state's needs of energy.
It helps fulfill the demands of the electricity, industrial, and economic sectors safely and sustainably in line with the changing regional and internation energy market.
The strategy aims to diversify the inputs into the national natural gas network to include production from domestic fields, pipeline-imported gas, and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Additionally, the ministry signed several agreements with leading international companies to lease advanced FRUs, which will expand the system's capacity and support a stable supply during peak periods.
The ministry also highlighted efforts to prepare several new berths and connect them to the national gas grid, sustainably boosting Egypt's gas infrastructure. This will ensure balanced distribution between supply and demand areas to maximize the stability of the national grid.
Berths have been deployed at the Sumed and Sonker ports in Ain Sokhna, in addition to the United Gas Derivatives Company (UGDC) berth in Damietta. This comes as part of the final phase of connecting the FSRUs to their designated berths according to the planned timeline.
The 'Hoegh Galleon' unit has been deployed at Ain Sokhna since 2024, while the 'Energos Eskimo' and 'Energos Power' are connected to the Sumed and Sonker berths in Ain Sokhna. This is in addition to the 'Winter' unit connected to UGDC's berth in Damietta.
Hence, the four units' combined daily capacity during the peak consumption of 2025 will stand at 2,700 million cubic feet.
In cooperation with Jordan, a fifth FSRU, Energos Force, is expected to arrive at the Port of Aqaba by the end of July, as it will be connected to the Arab Gas Pipeline.
This will add a new gateway to the national grids, enhancing the ability to respond to any emergencies during the summer, with a regasification daily capacity of up to 750 million cubic feet.

Ethiopia looks to natural gas to fuel its growth

Ethiopia says it will start exporting natural gas, part of a turnaround plan for an economy weighed down by shortage of foreign currency. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed told parliament on Thursday that his administration would begin its first-ever gas export 'in the near future,' which would mark a milestone in the nation's economic transformation. Dr Abiy said the country had previously attempted to explore and export natural gas during the tumultuous DERG regime and before, but none of those efforts came to fruition. Now, Ethiopia has partnered with new companies for gas exploration, he added.'Following the completion of the first phase, the second phase of the gas project will also be launched in due course,' he said. Dr Abiy's announcement comes after the country indicated in its Energy Outlook report of May that the government had cancelled the planned natural gas extraction in the Ogaden region, and a pipeline project to Djibouti for export as LNG, due to 'challenges in securing project financing and slow project implementation contributed to this decision.''This cancellation limits Ethiopia's ability to generate revenue from natural gas exports and diversify its energy sources. Use of domestic natural gas would increase CO2 emission, but could be a relevant option to balance generation in dry years and reduce the need for fertiliser imports,' the Water and Energy ministry said. According to the new report, Ethiopia is currently extracting coal for industrial use.'The future role of natural gas in Ethiopia's energy mix will depend on the feasibility of new extraction and distribution projects, alongside economic and geopolitical considerations,' the report says.'Natural gas could potentially be used to compensate for the missing generation from hydro in dry years,' the new report says. Ethiopia has significant oil and natural gas potential in the Ogaden Basin, especially Calub and Hilala fields. The Ministry of Mines wants to work with Ethiopian Electric Power to integrate natural gas into electricity generation. The country is dependent on imported petroleum products, with current costs in excess of $4 billion annually. The policy will focus on natural gas exploration and prioritise development of the sector to open the area for companies and to encourage investments. It relies on renewable energy sources for electricity, with hydropower contributing over 90 percent of the country's supply. Major projects such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), with a capacity of 5,150 MW, and the Koysha Hydroelectric Power Plant, with a capacity of 1,800 MW, are crucial for meeting the growing demand for electricity. The GERD is currently producing 2,350MW and is planned to reach full capacity within a year. In addition to hydropower, wind farms such as Adama and Aysha contribute to the national grid. The country also has significant untapped solar and geothermal potential. © Copyright 2022 Nation Media Group. All Rights Reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Egypt: El-Wazir announces offering 36 factories to investors at Robbiki Leather City

Arab Finance: Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir announced the launch of the second offering of industrial factories at Robbiki Leather City. This comes within the third phase, which comprises 36 fully equipped factories for finished leather products. The offering will be available on Egypt's Digital Industrial Platform from July 5th to 27th. This initiative follows the success of the first offering, which was launched last December and resulted in the allocation of all offered factories with a coverage rate exceeding 100%. Implemented under the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the new offering aims to strengthen local industry and stimulate industrial investment, especially in key sectors with high added value, such as the leather industry. The 36 ready-to-operate factories span areas ranging from 121 to 2,000 square meters (sqm) to meet the investors' various demands. In this regard, six factories (2,000 sqm), 10 factories (1,000 sqm), and 20 industrial workshops (121 sqm) will be channeled through Cairo Company for Investment and Development (CID). El-Wazir noted that these factories serve varied production capacities, adding that multiple units can be merged for expansion-focused investors, ensuring smooth management. He also affirmed the ministry's commitment to supporting serious investors and bolstering a flexible, stable production environment within the Robbiki Leather City. The new offering, available under both instalment sale and operational rent systems, has unprecedented facilitations, including an integrated package of financing solutions secured with the Export Development Bank of Egypt (EBank). This facility covers machinery, working capital, technical support, and export assistance. Moreover, investors at the Robbiki Leather City will receive additional incentives, most notably an additional 50% of export burden refunds, to evolve global competitiveness. © 2020-2023 Arab Finance For Information Technology.
