Fiscal Year Year Held Number of Draws Notes FY 2021 2020 2 Second draw in August 2020 FY 2022 2021 3 Due to low initial filings FY 2023 2022 1 High filing rate in Round 1 FY 2024 2023 2 Second draw in July 2023 FY 2025 2024 1 Single draw; high acceptance-to-filing ratio
In a late update on Monday, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced an extension to the filing deadline for the FY 2026 H-1B cap petitions . The deadline, which was initially set for Monday, June 30, has now been extended by one day to 7:30 pm EDT on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.USCIS said the extension was due to technical difficulties that may have prevented some filers from completing Form I-129 and the associated Form G-28 drafts. The agency advised petitioners to review their Form I-129 drafts for completeness and restart the Form G-28 draft before submitting.Form G-28 is filed by attorneys or accredited representatives to officially represent employers or beneficiaries. If it was left incomplete or failed to save due to the glitch, the entire petition submission may be rejected or delayed.Missing the deadline means losing the H-1B lottery spot, even if the candidate was selected earlier. The H-1B cap filing deadline applies to employers who were selected in the initial lottery phase for FY 2026 and must now file the complete H-1B petition, including all supporting documentation, before the submission window closes. The H-1B cap is set at 85,000 new visas per fiscal year, including 65,000 under the regular cap and 20,000 under the US master's degree exemption. Petitioners who miss the filing deadline for their selected registrations lose the chance to proceed under this fiscal year. The H-1B selection process begins with a registration lottery in March, followed by the petition filing phase. If there are not enough completed and approvable petitions from the first round, USCIS may conduct a second lottery."The prospect of a second lottery are difficult to predict. If we go by the percentage filing in our own office, it is fairly high as compared to other years. This could partly be because a lot of our clients are product based companies. Our other colleagues are reporting relatively low filing numbers," Rajiv Khanna, US-based immigration attorney, commented on the possibility of a second draw.USCIS has not yet indicated whether a second lottery will occur, but the outcome may depend on the number of petitions received by the newly extended deadline. In 2023, USCIS conducted two additional lotteries due to low petition filings from the first round. If FY 2026 follows that trend, another draw could happen later this summer. Here's a brief recap of the H-1B lottery patterns over recent years:

Ahmedabad: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police took custody of Birju Salla, a Mumbai-based businessman previously convicted in a hijack threat case, from the Ahmedabad city crime branch on Thursday morning. The action follows his arrest in a multi-crore cheating case involving a jewellery businessman in Mumbai. According to crime branch officials, Salla was arrested on Wednesday from a five-star hotel on Ashram Road where he checked in under a false identity. He was wanted in connection with a Rs 12.77 crore jewellery fraud registered by the EOW of Mumbai police. Soon after his arrest, a Mumbai police team arrived in Ahmedabad and formally took over his custody for further investigation. Salla is already under scrutiny in two separate threat note cases — one involving a bomb threat on an IndiGo flight from Ahmedabad to Jeddah in Nov 2024, and another targeting the Ahmedabad airport in Jan this year. He gained notoriety in 2017 after planting a hijack threat note on a Jet Airways flight and was the first person to be booked under the stringent Anti-Hijacking Act, 2016. Franchise trap: Senior citizen scammed in 38L pizza deal gone wrong
Surat: What started as a dream venture for a 61-year-old retiree hoping to run a reputed pizza franchise turned into a financial nightmare. In a tale that mixes ambition, deception, and betrayal, a mother-daughter duo and their associate allegedly lured the senior citizen into a well-orchestrated franchise scam — swindling him out of Rs 38 lakh under the guise of selling him the Katargam outlet of an Ahmedabad-based pizza brand. The victim not only lost his money but also control of the business he was promised ownership of. According to Singanpor police, the accused — Binita Bhavsar, her daughter Priyansi Mistry, and Dhruv Mistry — allegedly duped Vipul Vachhani, 61, a resident of Adajan, by convincing him to purchase the Katargam franchise for Rs 40 lakh. The trio claimed they were planning to settle abroad and wished to sell the outlet. They have been booked on charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy. Vachhani found the opportunity through Bobby Thakkar, an administrator with the pizza company. Thakkar introduced him to the accused, who invited him to visit their outlet in Zircon Complex, Katargam. They encouraged him to spend two months at the shop to gain experience before finalising the deal. After gaining his trust, the accused agreed to sell the franchise for Rs 40 lakh. Vachhani paid Rs 20 lakh upfront and was promised legal transfer of ownership later. However, after he paid another Rs 10 lakh over time, the ownership remained unchanged. Meanwhile, customer payments made online were credited to Binita's account. In Jan 2024, Vachhani requested repayment of Rs 2.32 lakh collected online and asked the accused to clear pending GST dues of Rs 7 lakh and formally hand over the business. But the trio kept delaying with various excuses. In Feb and March, online customer payments totaling Rs 6.10 lakh were also withheld. Realising he was being misled, Vachhani approached Thakkar, who gave him the accused's contact details and advised him to shut the shop temporarily for 'renovation'. Vachhani complied and returned the keys to the property owner. The accused later collected the keys and quietly transferred the franchise to the owner of the Adajan outlet, cutting Vachhani out of the deal completely. While Binita and Priyansi are currently based in Pune, Dhruv resides in Navsari. Police have initiated a probe and formed teams to trace and apprehend the accused.

India conveys concerns to US Senator on Russian oil 'tariff'
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India has officially expressed its concerns to US senator Lindsey Graham on a proposed bill seeking to impose a 500% tariff on countries importing crude oil from Russia. "Regarding Senator Lindsey Graham's bill, any development which is happening in the US Congress is of interest to us if it impacts our interest or could impact our interest. So we have been in touch with Senator Lindsey Graham. The embassy, ambassador have been in touch," Jaishankar told reporters in Washington on Wednesday. He said Graham has been made aware of India's concerns and interests in the energy and security space. "We'll then have to cross that bridge when we come to it, if we come to it," he added. Experts on Russian-US affairs indicated that India could be seeking a waiver under the bill. The bill proposes to levy a 500% tariff on any nation that buys Russian oil, natural gas, uranium, and other products. The bill has over 80 co-sponsors in the Senate, potentially making it veto-proof. Speaking to ABC news on Sunday, Graham claimed US President Trump told him that the sanctions bill should be brought forward for a vote. Earlier in May, Graham said he is in touch with Trump about the bill. Republican lawmakers have indicated they are worried about moving the bill but are waiting for Trump's approval before bringing it to the floor of the Senate. The proposed bill comes amid efforts by the White House to stabilise ties with the Kremlin. Meanwhile, Jaishankar also acknowledged the challenge of finding consensus among international partners. He said countries are not supporting each other "sufficiently enough" when countering terrorism. "Part of diplomacy is to exhort them, encourage them, persuade them, motivate them to do that, and which is why it's important to speak up, and which is why it's important to carry them with us to the best possibility," he said.
